ICE raids on Mississippi food processing plants result in 680 arrests

Were any of the plant managers arrested for hiring illegal aliens?

There is your problem right there. There is no disincentive to not hire them.

Make E-Verify a legal requirement for all businesses.

E-Verify is already a legal requirement in MS.
No doubt most of the workers weren't properly vetted and/or were using someone else's legal documents.

It will be interesting to find out how 600 went under the radar.

I find this stuff funny. The left always use the narrative that we should go after the employers and then when Trump goes after the employers the left cries fowl (pun intended).

Oh fowl you.

Exactly. What's easier - round up 680 illegals, or one general manager? Which would work better to discourage illegal migrant workers?

This is baby level logic...how do you guys still have a problem?

Conservatives and twump supporters are utterly and tragically unacquainted with logic. It is anathema to them.

Two separate legal issues here. The full force of the law should be brought to bear on employers. And those who are here illegally should be deported.

Agreed...but pareto suggests that to solve the problem going forward, there is a lot more value in going after employers.

Meh...I've heard a number of conservatives on here say the same thing. You know how it goes with tribalism these days... I think the folks that would be against holding corporations accountable fall within a sub demographic.

In a perfect world, where I decide everything (lol), you guys would be working together, taking on your government, vs. fighting amongst yourselves while the government gets away with murder...or, at best, complete incompetence.

Trump has proposed federal E-verify laws.

But, you probably won't see this reported by the leftist news spinners.
New E-Verify bill could bring Mitt Romney and Donald Trump together over common cause

It is how they decide to enforce the laws that causes the problems, and the apparent glee that some of the right take in the human tragedy side of this.

Were any of the plant managers/ owners arrested for their actions in hiring these people?

What glee is that? Personally, I’m glad to see raids like this and think it should happen more often if there’s evidence of large scale violations of immigration law. It really is tragic that the unlawful activities of the illegal immigrants led to their kids having to go through something this traumatic.

If we are a nation of laws we have violated the one of principles of the Code of Hammurabi, specifically creating a system of law so that .

Not to mention there is this:

We may be a nation of laws, but what good are laws if the values, principles, and ideals that form the foundations of said laws are rotten and non-existant? If there are no ideals or values that encourage people to consent to said laws, then the only way laws can be enforced is through brute force. No Representative Democracy or Republic can survive if their system of law is entirely dependent on forced compliance and not the willing consent of the governed.
Children of undocumented immigrants arrested in Mississippi rely on strangers for food and shelter | WJTV

We do rely on the consent of the governed, but if your standard is consent of 100% of the people, then we’ll have no laws at all.

Do you think these parents bear any responsibility for what their children are going through?

It is extremely inefficient to require manual verification of who is working for each US employer (job creator?). This is the digital age where the name, address and SSN/ITIN of every US worker is reported to IRS - what more is needed to implement eVerify?

How about the illegal activity of those that hired them? I have not seen anything on arrests made of plant management. Do you support that as well?

Absolutely. Companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I think there should be a robust guest worker program for companies that would like to hire migrant workers. I think it should be for a set period of time with extensions available, and would allow for some of them to work to become citizens eventually.

Private firms not under govt contract are not required to use EV....therefore their guilt in "knowing" is moot. They don't "know". It is the Sgt Schultz defense.

So the though of 680 families being torn apart gives you the warm and fuzzies?

That really bothers me. Taking parents away from little kids makes me sick. Then it makes me angry and disgusted at those who cheer this **** on.

I wonder how many CEOs will be going to jail for hiring migrant workers for decades. I'm guessing none.

After reading your post, I clicked and read about how many employers were arrested. Care to take a guess?

E-Verify can barely verify their own existence.

Koch Foods where one of the raids happened is owned by Joseph Grendys, a billionaire and a long time resident of Chicago. He has several plants throughout several states and has well over 14,000 employees. Wonder how many are illegal? It is a privately owned company estimated to have at least 5 billion in revenue. If I read it correctly they took 5 bus loads of illegals out of his Koch Foods plant. I think Mr. Grendys may be in some trouble. Lately there has been an uptick in prosecutions against companies in certain states who hire illegals. At the very least ICE has been issuing hefty fines against any company for every illegal they have hired.

If some of you think CNN's reporting is propaganda, you should have caught Shephard Smith on FOX. Unbelievable.

During that clown show in the House when Mueller came to testify, the talking point from the Democrats was "Nobody is above the Law". But these very same Democrats don't feel the same in regard to illegal immigrants.

Today's raid will produce illegal immigrants involved in identity theft like using a SS number that does not belong to them. It will most likely produce others that skipped out on their Immigration hearing and others who have broken the law while being here illegally.

Would you be willing to pay 15% more for chicken so wages could rise to attract citizens?

A third choice is using the “H” system after it is shown that you can’t get American workers, BUT be paid now lower than the American prevailing wage for that job.

Am I willing to reduce Koch Brothers profits by 15%? You bet I am. Interesting how the red states hire the most illegal immigrants all the while yelling about an invasion...

And thus the cycle continues...

They absolutely have to be held accountable, and let us hope they will be. This was ICE though. Not sure if they can arrest citizens in a sweep like this. I have to look that up.

There is no law on the books that allows for the arrest of someone who hires illegal workers because they all shrug and say that they didn't know.
