Did the “send her back” chant go too far?

Did the “send her back” chant go too far?

He said he wasn’t happy with it. That’s pretty clear.

Uh huh, he looked extremely unhappy while it was happening. Let's roll the tape and pay close attention to his facial looks. Does he look upset listening to those around him chant, send her back? Not to me he doesn't.

Trump has already crossed this line so many countless times.

Still not acceptable on any level. There's no "going too far", there is only unacceptable.

He was bathing in the hatred he has stoked.

Just yesterday pundits were discussing the possibility of "not going to far" with his racist attacks as an acceptable re-election strategy. That is how far we have fallen.

The only positive aspect of it is that when it has gone too far, it does finally become unacceptable.

As always, Trump can be compared to a middle school bully. We tend to accept a certain amount of bullying, as it can be subtle and hard to identify, not unlike acts or expressions of racism (as there are always those ready to deny it even when it's in front of our faces). it seems that often, only when a bully goes to far, do we declare it all unacceptable.

So racism has gone too far?

I'm gonna stick with no level of acceptable.

I’m mainly interested in what my fellow righties have to say, but of course anyone can vote. I hadn’t heard or read about it until this morning. IMO, yeah, I think it went too far and I’m glad the President made it clear he didn’t agree with it. It is one thing to suggest that someone leave the country on their own because they seem to intensely dislike it here, but chanting to “send her back,” presumably involuntarily, because we don’t like what she said? That’s not good and we shouldn’t defend it.

Attaching poll.

The numbers you wanted show that even Cons here think he stepped over the line. Good for them....

I understand and agree. But we have lost ground, and "too far" may be a tipping point.

His supporters were loving it when he coined it, now they see they have gine to far, they disavow it.

Rinse, repeat.

and come up with another offensive variant.

Did he make it clear though???

Definitely not. If you saw the clip he let the rant go on for 13 seconds and when they stopped he said nothing. Now he is trying to say something different. He’s a liar.

I can’t think of a more futile waste of time than to attempt to convince his haters that his response to it then and now was adequate, so I’m not going to try. Personally, I’m glad he didn’t defend it.

He sent out Tweets on Sunday that every single one of us condemning them knew and told you encouraged exactly what we saw last night. So he goes to a rally, riles up the crowd, and they repeat that sentiment - "Send her back!" Trump preens in it, basks in it, because the crowd is doing what he encouraged them TO DO with those Tweets. We knew this was coming, and said so.

The next thing he does is lie about his reaction to them, and wants us to disbelieve our lying eyes and believe his lies. I don't think that is deserving of any credit. If you do, that's fine but we can all look at the video and know Trump is lying, like he always does.

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." That's what I will do here.

The issue of ad hom via lies alienation of a Congressperson. Not acceptable on any level. "Doesn't belong" isn't acceptable. "Get out" isn't acceptable. "Force her out" is not acceptable.

None of that is acceptable.

This isn't "going too far", it's unacceptable. Period.

Still not acceptable on any level. There's no "going too far", there is only unacceptable.

So racism has gone too far?

I'm gonna stick with no level of acceptable.

But is it acceptable?

We really do need to send her back to Minnesota.

That's disrespectful of constituents. What if it was your congressman being told, by the President and a political party, to go home.

I think you're right, but I have a feeling that the "send her back" chant will persist. It's in the nature of the beast that Trump is riding.

Let us remember the future that befell Dr. Frankenstein after creating his monster.

Trump is much like a completely nonplussed Willie Wonka who, when a wayward spoiled child wanders afar in his dangerous factory, whispers from afar "don't.. stop... come back" while doing nothing to really impede the child approaching their peril.

I might need to take a good introspective look into my politics....

We gave them the vote, we didn't necessarily give them the good sense to send a solution to Washington instead of a problem.

That's fascist.

Yup that went to far... Even for a political rally!

President Donald Trump denounces the “send her back” chant: “I disagree with it… I felt a little bit badly about it… I was not happy with it, I disagree with it”

This is an excellent move by @realDonaldTrump… https://t.co/woepM8ewk5"

What's interesting is reading the replies to that Tweet. The reaction from the Trump supporters overwhelmingly that they're disappointed in Trump for walking it back. I mean of course that's the reaction, but it's still interesting to see it in print as it happens. This is what Trump's GOP is at this point. "Send her back!!" is who they are, what they believe. That's no accident - it's been a deliberate process and he added to it Sunday and then last night, encouraged this, wants this.

Frankly, with regard to the things he says, my expectations of him are super low (sad, I know) and I’m just glad he didn’t try defending the chant or worse, double down on it.

According to video, he listened to the chant for 13 seconds before resuming speaking.13 seconds is a long time to stand quiet and listen to a crowd chanting something you disagree with.
Double-down? From the CNN report...
"Later in his remarks, Trump encouraged his audience to "tell them to leave" the US if they continue to criticize him.
"They are always telling us how to run it, how to do this. You know what? If they don't love it, tell them to leave it," Trump said."

Yeah, it's strange reading those tweets. Most I read though said Trump originally was just saying "leave and come back". Much different than lock her up..I mean "send her back".

I liked this one though:

Good for him. That was the right thing to do. Go President Trump. You gotta know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em (Kenny Rogers)
Reminds me of LMAO (laughing my ass off). Or was it LOL? (laughing out loud).

Agreed. It should not have been said or encouraged. I think Ilhan Omar is a horrible person who believes in horrible things, and I can only hope she loses her Congressional seat (which she probably won't), but I do not agree with people chanting "Send her back!" any more than I agree with people chanting "Rape her!"

No, she probably WILL lose her seat because as I said, she is only focusing on her tiny Somali diaspora, which is 70 thousand people in a district which is maybe two million voters. She won because her Republican challenger actually WITHDREW his campaign before the election and because her Democratic primary opponents only had single digit approval.

Her district is a very reliable liberal district, usually the Democrat-Farm Labor Party, but Omar's district also includes the Jewish diaspora of Saint Louis Park, which I am convinced will field a rival in the DFL.
