Is a country's funding of abortion of strategic importance — a significant geopolitical concern?

It seems hard to imagine how it would be.

Seems things like resources and location would be determining factors rather than some peculiar piece of the country's domestic affairs.

Perhaps the country's stance on abortion is neither here nor there when it comes to what is smart for the US to do when providing aid.

Just when you thought the abortion debate could not get any worse...

It depends on the aid's purpose. Are we giving foreign aid specifically to fund those abortions? No. Definitely not. But I do not think our country ought to refuse aid simply because the Country may subsidize women's health programs that include providing abortions.

I often hear people say, "I don't want my tax dollars paying for abortions." I wonder how deep their convictions run and if they have thought about how this relates to other issues.

Outside of some very extreme cases I am pretty much against all foriegn aid. If people want to donate to a particular cause they can do so on their own or start a charity/foundation to help out. The US has it's own debts and issues that money should be used for.

Follow the money..... Most "foreign aid" has stipulations that it be spent with American companies. So it's more "aid" to big corporations than to the people of the country it's sent to. Much of the "aid' might not even address what the foreign aid recipient country needs most; it usually reflects which US corporations did the best job lobbying for it.

Example; a small country of slash and burn farmers operating on 40 acres or less gets lots of new tractors and farm implements they neither know how to use, can't maintain, and can seldom repair. But it's a good deal for the American farm implement supplier. And to pay back the loans the recipient country pushes the small farmers out and starts large scale farming producing crops for export. The little farmer is kicked to the curb and now faces starvation. or becomes cheap surplus labor if they can make it past the US border.

Why wouldnt we? Do we place the unborn of other countries above our own self-interests of security, economics, good will, and women's rights?

You're correct; self interest should trump any concerns for the unborn. or anything else for that matter.

Those are good questions. I would like to see a pro-lifer answer that. I am for freedom, therefore I am pro-choice.

One would like to think our foreign policy/aid wouldn't fall prey to the domestic abortion conundrum.

But then again, I had felt the same assuredness about climate change policy.

Never underestimate the power of stupid.

So then you voted Yes?

So then you voted Yes?

Of course I voted NO. My self interest is that one of those unborn might be the person who cures cancer, or writes a great best selling book I might want to read, or who makes the scientific discovery that saves the planet. I fully understand that your self interest is different than mine. I understand where you're coming from. We don't need any more thugs or hungry kids running around. We KNOW what they turn into........

Rather, I'm thinking we should defund states that ban abortions.

That old cliche?

I think we discussed this already: there is just as much chance that those aborted would be Hitler as Einstein. They would range all over the spectrum of good and bad and basically it would all balance out neutrally. Just as many bad as good but the vast majority average people.

So you're 'reason' is based on a foundation of sand.

So you would put our country's best interests behind more unwanted and unaffordable kids around the world? That's...sweet.

*hiccup*

slow connection

I would put our countries best interest behind life instead of death. Maybe give away fewer fighter planes, tanks, artillery, and bombs and give away more day care centers and build more schools? How's that sound?

That's not the topic.

I'm not really interested in your foreign relations plans.

Should the U.S. give foreign aid to countries that fund abortion?

No we shouldn't give foreign aid to countries that fund abortion. But then again I think we shouldn't give any foreign aid to any country when we have our own problems to worry about and debt to pay off.

Should the U.S. give foreign aid to countries that fund abortion?

well i have many opinions about foreign aid, pros and cons, support and against BUT the country funding abortion would never be a disqualify by itself thats just retarded. Actually a "similar" opposite would be a good reason not to give aid, if they are a country against womans and human rights.

We really shouldn't be doing much "foreign aid" to start with.

Should the U.S. give foreign aid to countries that fund abortion?
The US should give foreign aid to no one for any reason.

We can stop giving aid to our allies. Russia and China would love to have more allies

Any country that requires money for their support is not an ally.
