Joe Biden keeps saying he's going to work with Republicans as a campaign pitch. To someone like me that is a red flag. I understand he's trying to appeal to moderates, but, I still think the DC conventional wisdom that the country is center-right is mostly wrong. If there is polling out there that demonstrates that Americans support a center-right, pro-corporate agenda, please show me.

At any rate, when I hear Joe Biden say he's looking forward to working with Republicans, that is about the farthest thing from a winning message with this type of lean-left voter.

To be clear: I will vote for a ham sandwich with a D, in order to defeat Trump. But, I'd like my ham sandwich to at least be made the way I like it. And that does not include working with Republicans.

Over the past 10 years, the Republicans have not shown the capacity to form any sort of partnership or consensus with the American people. I could totally see them working with Biden on things that benefit the 1% and screw the American people, while demonizing Joe Biden for doing said thing and pretending like they fought him the whole way. Because when Democrats and Republicans get together, it's usually to screw the people and do some favors for their funders. Bipartisanship with the legion of Right Wing corporate shills is about the furthest thing from helpful to the American people. Now, Bipartisanship with Rand Paul, I'm sure there are areas we could find common ground with Rand Paul. I was very much in support of the Yemen bill that Trump vetoed. That had a sliver of bipartisanship. Most Republicans are blood thirsty war hawks who do the bidding of Raytheon and Boeing, etc. And many Democrats are as well. But, there are elements of libertarianism that would make sound policy.

However, Rand Paul is an anomaly within the Republican Party. Biden seems captured by the idea that the Republican Party is going to return to sanity after Trump is gone. That's incredibly naive. I think it was Obama who said, "the fever is going to break" in reference to Republicans coming to their senses. Well, that didn't happen. Obama attempted to do what Joe Biden is saying he is going to do, and the Republicans called him a Kenyan, Marxist, Muslim Brotherhood Islamist. Berated him about his birth certificate non-stop. Usurped the Constitution by holding up Merrick Garland, well you get the picture. They were not interested in bipartisanship at all.

Because of Republican hostilities, and because the Republican Party has lost its mind, I voted for break the spine of the Republican Party and drink its spinal fluid. I find a Democrat saying he looks forward to working with Mitch McConnell troubling. And I wish my Democratic front runner would vow to fight him instead.

Joe Biden's only hope to get the DNC nomination is by appearing to be more centrist (aka electable in the general election) than the vast herd of his farther left competition. As the herd splits the farther left vote among themselves, Biden wins those that keep their eye on the prize of voting for a demorat POTUS candidate capable of getting enough independent votes to oust Trump.

Don't worry. The Dems will never work with Republicans unless their donors tell them to...and it's the same the other way.

You should know by now that it doesn't matter what a politician says. S/He is going to do what their donors tell them to do.

As a conservative, I hope the Democrats nominate a moderate bipartisan type. That obviously won’t be in their interests.

The immediate theoretical capture of the nomination by Biden is a shut down of the loony left writ large. Experienced leaders like Pelosi know they are a lost cause and not what main stream democrats are looking for. Biden is the media’s choice, so the rest will see their air supply cut off by the MSM and they will suddenly be referred to as “potential Vice Presidents”.

Its just shows how fractured the party is. My guess is they will still rig it with super delegates or something like they did before and nominate Biden if they see themselves stuck with a socialist.

Lastly, scripted media and a teleprompter can only cover for Joe for so long. He will be nearly 78 if he is sworn in. Everyone flames out sometime, and some people retain their abilities longer than others. Biden cannot pull it off. His confusion is evident, and the teleprompter only works in controlled circumstances. He will not be able to survive an unscripted debate. His mental acuity is questionable.

The smart play would be to run the most promising 2024 candidate in 2020, and still keep him front and center for 2024 if he loses. The legacy of the Clinton machine is a democrat party with no bench, no effective leadership, and due to identity politics and the left’s message of “give no quarter”, the far left will probably stay home like a spurned lover.

The thing is, except for the far left TDS group and the permanent political class among the GOP, Trump has opened the eyes of a whole bunch of people to possibilities we haven't dared hope for in a long time. We have become so jaded that we expect the politicians to say the kinds of things they think will get people to vote for them, and then once elected toss all that on the shelf and do whatever is expedient to increase their power, prestige, influence, and along with that, their personal wealth.

So finally we don't vote for somebody we're really excited about but vote for the party we think will do the least damage.

President Trump may have ruined it for that kind of politician at least for awhile. He isn't partisan, he isn't an ideologue, and he isn't beholden to the permanent political class. He doesn't accept a less than adequate or effective status quo and if tradition or the way it has always been done has produced inadequate results or makes no sense, he refuses to be bound to it.

We may not like the way he says it and the way he goes about it sometimes makes us really nervous, but we sure can't turn a blind eye to the results he is getting. He'll make mistakes and get it wrong from time to time, but he is the first President we have had in a long time that is actually working for us instead of a political party or promoting an ideology. And we like the results we are getting.

God willing, he may promote the idea that those elected to government are expected to actually accomplish something instead of just talk pretty words.

I am hopeful.

I voted "break the spine." The GOP is being destroyed from within, and the party is pretty much over with.

You can keep your slings and arrows, those who @me, because for the most part, the only Republicans who say the party is not dead are those who are killing it, i.e. supporters of Trump, McConnell, ****-stains like Roy Moore, etc.

Most old-school Republicans are sick to death of what has happened to this party, and they want it fixed.

Personally, I'd love to see the leg swept out from under the GOP, and somebody start all over, with a few rules in place to keep what is happening today, from happening again.

Nobody wants to win just because the other guy is floating upside down in the tank. Most people want to win a fair fight, with a decent candidate.

I'm tempted to say **** the republicans let the party die off. However, wishful thinking won't do it. I'm open to any good policy idea no matter where it comes from but in general when the dems are in power working with the republicans seems to mean giving them their way as the minority party. In general there is no working with the R party unless you are for less taxes on the wealthy and corporate america and don't mind polluting everything in sight.

How's that wall going? Farmers, had enough winning? No? Well don't worry, that socialism that the right hates will be sending you welfare checks to offset some of the loses the guy you voted for has incurred for you.

Now they're once again on their abortion march to the supreme court. The republican party has become a cancer in america that needs removal.

That's quite a load of hopeful for a POTUS who (personally?) hires illegal immigrants, touts the wonders of "guest workers" (take a temporary job at Mara Lago for whatever meager wage/benefits are offered and then get out) but does not want to push an eVerify mandate to have the vast majority be forced to self-deport and raise wages for the lower skilled US workers thus reducing the need for the Great Wall Of Trump and "safety net" spending.

It certainly seems fishy to me that anyone would choose to come with an anti-illegal immigration plan which largely ignores 12M to 20M illegal immigrants already (working?) here and ignore the major source of future illegal immigrants (visa overstays) and direct billions of borrowed public funds to folks (friends?) in the wall building profession. His latest plea is to have the bulk of legal immigrants vetted (by "job creators'"?) for "merit" - i.e. to fill jobs that Americans won't (ever) have available to them. If you don't see that as scam to preserve (and possibly enhance) the presence of immigrant labor (legal or not) then I have doubts about your observational skills.

Enough is enough, **** all the elephants.

The Republicans count on Democrats playing fair, that's what they prey upon most. They pull the dirtiest politics possible, because they are willing to do anything for power, even if it's all done along party lines, when they have the majorities.

Rewarding them with good will and charity after their political stunts, will only embolden them to become worse.

I think your characterization of the President's proposed immigration reform is pretty much off base. But we can disagree.

OK, but why do you suppose that eVerify is so conspicuously missing from the Trump plan as he moves on to changing legal immigration methods?

Open borders advocate & amnesty, eh? That is the only path to socialism open to democrats.

Because Trump knows eVerify is a non-starter in Congress. Congressional donors won't allow it.

Americans Favor Compromise to Get Things Done in Washington

Americans Favor Compromise to Get Things Done in Washington

I think what Biden is doing is targeting moderates and or the independent voter. Those that fall in-between the two major parties ideological wise. Those of not the far left and not of the far right. Politics is the art of the possible. Compromise and the give and take games come into play in order to get all that is possible. Of course one has to know or have an idea of what is possible. It also takes both parties to make this work, to make government work.

In today's world of politics, an era of ultra high partisanship and polarization, compromise is out the window. Each party would whether get nothing, zero than to see or give the other party 10% in order to receive 90%. As things stack up today, I would say Biden has the best chance of beating Trump in the general election. I say that because Biden can attract independents where as Hillary Clinton couldn't, didn't. But can old Joe win in the democratic primaries? I don't think he can. But time will tell.

2020 in my opinion is an election for the Democrats to lose. But then again, so too was 2016. With the right candidate they win in a landslide. With the wrong candidate, Trump is back in the game with the possibility of another 2016 happening. It's up to the Democrats to figure out who is that right candidate. Will they, I'm not that hopeful.

So was spending borrowed billions on the Great Wall Of Trump yet he was willing to (partially) shutdown the government over that nonsense. An eVerify mandate would, by far, give US workers the most bang for the public buck spent and a decent chance at serious pay, benefit and working condition improvements. Forcing US employers to compete for US workers instead of forcing US workers to compete for thrid world labor conditions is a must.

The first rule about dealing with a hole is to stop digging.

The wall is more important than eVerify.

Nope, the additional parts of the wall will slow down a few while eVerify, coupled with federal income tax law changes to mandate its use by employers, will stop many from both remaining here or entering illegally to work.

Not sure what you mean. I'm pretty sure what is on the table is not all there will ever be though.

Democrats know they can't get the votes here, so import some.

**** the Republican party. Obama attempted to play nice and we saw where that got him.

Compromise with the Republicans has rarely ended well in the few times they've ever shown themselves willing in recent years, and it always and without exception comes at great cost, or is indeed geared towards ends that don't benefit the general populace, being more borne of consensus from their sponsors.

The time for bipartisan 'compromise' in giving the GOP 70% or more of what they want in exchange for the remainder is over. I'm sick of weak, vacillating Democrats devoid of conviction and substance like Biden and Obama, claiming pragmatism when what they really mean is weakness, expediency, pathetic, grovelling supplication to their donors that pad the pockets of both sides. Demanding unity when what they really mean is thoughtless, reflexive compliance with the same bull**** policies and politicians that have given us existential financial crisis free of consequence for those who caused it, declining life expectancies, instability across the globe and the middle east in particular, multi-trillion dollar tarpit wars, a barbaric for-profit healthcare system that's the most inefficient the world has ever seen, and the worst income inequality in the country's noted history. No more.

Break their ****ing spines, tear them apart.

Trump lied his ass off to get elected. the democratic nominee should promise everything even if it's unachievable, as apparently, there's a market for that. promise bipartisanship, free ice cream, great jobs for everyone that you don't even have to show up to, free taco trucks, and a Camaro in every garage. do whatever it takes to vote this idiot out of office before he can start a war.

Republicans have shown that they return good and fair play extended to them, with the nastiest, most low down, cutthroat politics possible.

Republicans are a scourge on America. Democrats need to fight fire with fire. No quarter. No compromise.
