It was called a paddy wagon at the time because so many cops were irish so when the wagon came up it was the paddy wagon.

I suppose that would be a better reason than calling it that because they assumed most the people they would be arresting would be Irish. :)

I've heard paddy wagon, but Black Maria was the most frequent term used, when I was a kid, even though they weren't always black. Nowadays it's be a Police van.

Interesting WIKI. It seems the paddy wagon was more likely about the prisoners than the policemen!

We called them Ham-vans. Apologies to police officers everywhere but we were young and angry. Po-po-mobiles, Copper-carts or the Heat were also used.

Cheers.

They're asking what you call the VEHICLE. We all know what we call the cops, VEHICLE, the VEHICLE...

“Rollin’”;what don’t you get?

Not steppin’, rollin’! Twist one up!

I have a friend who is in training for State Police. I'm going to ask him. I'm guessing it's called a Transport Van.

Be honest here. Imagine you're at a bar, and a boxy police vehicle pulls up in response to a large fight.

It's Mueller's Gestapo swat team in tactical gear fully armed with high powered rifles and stun grenades going after the unarmed pajama-clad harmless old guy who leaked secrets uncovered by the hush-hush Mueller investigation detailing Hillary's collusion with the Russians.

I've never seen a van or wagon or whatever. They'd send about 20 cruisers and if I see them coming, I'm leaving.

I think "paddy wagon" was derived from raucous groups of drunken Irishmen.

I was thinking the same. I don't think I have ever used the phrase (I don't believe I have ever seen one in person), but it is almost always called "paddy wagon" on TV Shows or movies.

Nobody asked for your political opinion,

I’m 75 years old and have never said paddy wagon.

I am 62 and can remember the term "paddy wagon" from as far back as kindergarten, from watching old movies and TV shows, but I too have never, in real life, used the term for any police vehicle.

As far as I know nobody here is selling their opinions to anyone.

Except you. This is supposed to be a light hearted thread until you decided that everyone needs to know what you think about the Mueller situation.
