LOL. Of course lefties would want them to be states. Diversify the government? No, to take over the government from Republicans. That isn't diversifying.

Yes because Puerto Rico as a state would (alone) take over the government from republicans.:lamo. It’s great that we have more cons coming out of their klan outfits into the light to support their racism out in the open.

Ah so you much prefer the poor white failed government in Kansas. Got it. You guys just can’t have any poor brown folk but you don’t mind poor white folk.
Those poor white folk are Americans. Puerto Ricans don't consider themselves Americans.

DC is not a state. Puerto Rico is not a state. California is just one state, not two or three. Both sides could play this stupid game if they want. Go ahead and add DC, Puerto Rico, and split California into three different states. We split Texas and Florida into 3 states each and then we come back out on top again. Don't forget, there are far more red states than blue states. We could split every red state into two different states. Hey, how about Wyoming? There's a lot of land there. We could split that into 5 different states. How would you feel about all that?

I support it mainly because the Senate has a lot of important responsibilities and, due to the 2 Senators from each state rule, it gives a big advantage to a minority of citizens. I see no problem with creating a Senate that more accurately represents the interests of the American people.

The senate was never intended to represent the interests of the American people, it’s time to return it to its original intent of representing the process and the elite. The Kavanaugh scam would never have seen the light of day if legislatures chose senators

Surprisingly, some high profile academics have come out in favor of the NYT opinion piece idea, such as Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe. Apparently the diversification process isn't happening fast enough for some people, and it's time to radically transform the USA anyway possible.

Puerto Ricans don't want statehood; as a culture they're too independent.

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, with the option to vote for Independence, Statehood, or maintain it's current status.

The Puerto Rican's have the option to vote for Statehood. If a majority choose to do so, then I agree that they should become our 51'st State.

The same holds true for American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana's

Why not?

Of course PR would likely choose statehood out of the 3 options. Would the United States benefit from granting statehood to PR? Are we even allowed to consider the pros and cons, or just rely on what Puerto Ricans want?

Perfect example of why leftists have no business governing.

Look again. You already got them. Up to them whether they want statehood or not.

We've denied statehood several times to territories requesting it. Congress decides, not the inhabitants of an affiliated territory.

In June 2017, the vast majority voted for statehood.

I have no problem with any US territory applying for statehood if that is what they want.

But as far as DC goes...no. The reason DC was created in the first place was to get rid of the possibility, and perception, that the Federal Government would be beholden to any one State. We do not have a nationalist government. Let's keep it that way.

/yawn watching you get triggered is it’s own reward. :lamo In your entire tantrum of comments did you not address how Puerto Rico alone would take over the government from republicans. But please continue stomping your feet at brown people.

Actually if they voted to be a state they would consider themselves to be Americans. But please keep showing your racism, it’s good for cons to show their true colors of their racism.

I don't care.

I don’t doubt it, your demonstrated racist comments show that one.

Aww. At least you admit to being racist. Thanks for admitting your bigotry.

I support their statehood, should they choose it, because all our governed should be able to participate fully in our government. That goes for every U.S. territory. Territories and administrative districts (or whatever the hell D.C. is) are antiquated ideas. People who are governed should have a say--even a token one--in how they're governed.

Would you be ok with joining them to other states, rather than having micro 2 Senator states with a tiny population and land size? Why not then just make every county in the country a different state?

Outright name calling for personal attacks like that are out of line in civilized debate in my opinion. He "admitted" no such thing in the slightest.

Coming from you that's damn right hilarious .

California will never split, and neither will Texas, or Florida.
Wyoming? Oh well, go ahead, and then each half gets three cows. Hoo boy.

17A will never be repealed. The elite can go pound sand.

I think after being treated to lectures and paper towels, you're going to see an earnest push for statehood.

DC is a "federal district", and it was constructed as such for that very reason, yes.
That said, the residents deserve more representation.

DC has long deserved a voting representative in the House. Don't see why that would be controversial, as House votes are rarely decided by one vote.

Senate would be a stickier matter, however.
