In many states, certain medical equipment is restricted to those with a certificate of need. These laws were originally written by federal and state governments to prevent medical equipment from being overpriced or to keep patients from being offered hospitalization when they don't need it.
However, some people see these laws as a barrier to new healthcare businesses and as another waste of bureaucracy. If you are among these people, the good news is that these laws are gradually withering away. In 1980, every state except for Louisiana had at least one certification of need law but as of 2017, that number has increased to twenty.
