This should have been a multiple choice poll. With 10 newspapers listed.

Yeah, you need far more than just 10 if I'm going to be honest.

Though I think the Enquirer shouldn't even be on the list at all. Simply because it's a smatter piece article at most times and a complete joke the rest of the time.

As of now, the NYTs might be the worst offender on this small list. Simply because they are probably one of the most accredited still around at the moment. Playing the part it did in breaking Watergate and all, if memory serves.

I've never heard of the weekly world news. The National Enquirer from what I seen at the check out counters is for UFO conspirators and Elvis sighters. Now I don't like the term fake news at all. It's a illegitimate portrayal of biased and slanted news coverage. Since I don't subscribe or read either the NYT or WSJ, personally I can't tell you whether one, the other or both fall into the biased or slanted news coverage. I have however heard the NYT's does and is on the side of the democrats/liberals in their reporting. Heard is second hand, unproveable by me.

I can tell you my own AJC is indeed biased and slanted in their news reporting heavily toward the democrats/liberals. Atlanta is a very liberal city where perhaps half the liberals in Georgia reside in and around the Atlanta metro area. So to be slanted or biased in a liberal way makes sense since the AJC is in the business of selling newspapers. Give the customer what he wants in a way he wants it. fake news, no. Biased news, yes.

The same holds true for the cable news networks. Give the views the news in a way they want to see and hear it. Fox from a conservative point of view, CNN and MSNBC from a liberal point of view. Again their job, business is to attract and keep viewership. The more viewers, the more each can charge for their commercials, the more money each can make. Making money is what these three corporate run business new networks are all about. Again, slanted and biased news reporting, but from a more business oriented position or reason. Making a profit.

There are times I wonder about this big hoopla about news reporting. Most Americans don't trust the media to report the news accurately, fully or fairly today anyway. According to Gallup, that trust has fallen from 72% back in 1976 down to 32% at the end of 2016.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/195542/americans-trust-mass-media-sinks-new-low.aspx

I think most Americans recognize the fact our news media has taken sides in our political battles and as such, their trust in receiving accurate, fully reported news in a fair way has dropped. This is the news media's own doings. But they probably make a ton of money being biased and slanted as that as a whole is what each of us want. especially the more partisan of us. News that reinforce our partisan and ideological views.

The NYT is trading on a reputation earned a generation ago. It's not the same paper it was in it's heyday. Today it's a liberal rag, not to be taken too seriously. By that I mean years ago you could trust the NYT to be fairly objective, but now, like most other sources, whatever you read in the Times needs to cross checked with other sources to get all the sides of an issue. The Times no longer stands out from the pack and must be verified like all the rest.

There is a reason why I chose weekly world news as a choice for this poll.

From its Wikipedia
The Weekly World News was a largely fictional news tabloid published in the United States from 1979 to 2007, renowned for its outlandish cover stories often based on supernatural or paranormal themes and an approach to news that verged on the satirical. Its characteristic black-and-white covers have become pop-culture images widely used in the arts. It ceased publication in August 2007

It published fictional news stories, in other words fake news.

Weekly world news is the definition of fake news, because it published fiction.

Apparently it doesn't anymore if it went out of business in 2007. I do think there is a huge difference between your weekly world news and the national enquirer and news networks and newspapers, magazines that supposedly report accurate news. I don't think one can compare the national enquirer even to my AJC. One you know is purely made up, the other tries to portray itself as a legitimate news source for accurate, fair and fully covered news.

The AJC in my opinion doesn't do fake news, the events, happenings they report on really happen while I didn't have supper with Elvis last night or took the local UFO flight to Roswell. Now in my opinion, the AJC does report the news in a slanted and bias way to try to make the liberals, democrats look good, Trump look bad, but are reporting actual happenings and events. Although I will admit, the GOP and Trump are doing a pretty good job of making their own selves look bad, the AJC really doesn't have to do much slanting.

My thoughts exactly.

I would add that the NYT and WSJ are as realiable as it is possible to be in reporting the news accurately. They have made mistakes, and they have had indiviual miscreants on their staffs (google "Jason Blair"), but those are unavoidable in the long run for any organization.

Ridiculous question. When Trump refers to "fake" news he's really referring to unfair biased news and that fits just about everyone. The media should not be reporting the news unfairly and dishonestly and with a bias. Everyone who does is an enemy of the people and that is, as I said, just about everyone. The MSM media are nothing but biased partisan hacks afflicted with TDS. AP and Reuters are about the closest you can come to being fair and unbiased and not having an agenda to take Trump down.

The NYT reports with a left bias. WSJ reports with a right bias. That's what the main problem is, it is not technically "fake" news but reporting the news with a bias. The NTY in particular has an agenda to get Trump and Republicans, which is dishonest and unfair reporting. They choose the content to report. They choose the content to omit and they do it all with a far left bias. Both are enemies of the people. No one takes the other choices seriously except for the tin foil hat crowd.

Nowadays, ALL media outlets present fake news at one time or another. Furthermore, when one presents fake news all the rest echo the junk.

btw, what do you consider the definition of "fake news"?

So give us an example of unbiased reporting on the Fat Boy summit in Singapore. Here are some typical headline messaging from worldwide news sources for you to consider in your deliberations:

Trump Salutes North Korean Officer.

Trump validates North Korean Government simply by meeting with Kim

Trump gives up military exercises for nothing in return

Trump says North Korean President is reasonable

Trump says North Korea will denuclearize

Trump deserves a Nobel Prize.

All but the last one is true and describes reality. The last one is typical of what we saw from the right wing. Would you argue that only the last one is unbiased?

The Watergate story was broken by Bob Woodward of the Washington Post.

Unbiased reporting is when that media reports both the good and the bad without an agenda. There were some good things that came out of that summit but they are rarely reported. Media should not have an agenda. If you are the six o'clock news it is biased, dishonest, and unfair to report 20 straight minutes of anti-Trump news every night and anything that does go good with the country they just quickly mention it, shove it under the rug, and give Trump no credit for it whatsoever. Your post is a great example of telling things from a slanted perspective.

News one doesn't like =/= fake news.

I think a better term than "fake news" to describe what is going on in the MSM would be yellow journalism.

Yellow journalism happens as well, but the fake stuff is there.

Enemies of the people?! What are you talking about!! Donald Trump is a deeply corrupt, narcissistic, serial liar. More mob boss than President. Thank God there are a few media outlets who expose his endless lies. W/O the opposing views found in the N.Y.Times, Public radio and few other media sources, this country would be no better than the Soviets with their Kremlin approved news media. But I see that Repubs are becoming the party that loves autocrats more than it does democrats. The misfortune is that ALL media outlets feel obliged to report every bit of rubbish that comes from the mouth or the tweets of this P.O.T.U.S. when there are so many more important events to discuss in the world. Trump takes all of the column/air space because he needs the media to pay attention to him all the time- negative or otherwise. I wish the media could choose to ignore him. ..It is a well known phenomenon that hate speech goes viral much more often than 'kind' speech, so Trump feeds his base on hate and made up enemies.

It is pretty damning when such a prestigious outlet as the NYTs, behaves as such in this day and age.

The Watergate story was broken by Bob Woodward of the Washington Post.

I keep getting it mixed up between the two, which I think this is the third time.

I think it's mainly because the NYT is older than the WaPo.

This is typical Banana Republican bull****, and, amusingly, the links provided support the opposite side of the argument.

From the NYT:

In review, the NYT utilizes emotionally loaded language in their headlines such as “Trump Again Falsely Blames Democrats for His Separation Tactic” and “A Financier’s Profit-Minded Mission to Open a Channel Between Kushner and North Korea”, however, they use credible sources such as law.cornell.edu, Financial Times, and the Washington Post. Story selection is typically balanced, however wording tends to lean left in most cases. A factual search shows the New York Times has made false claims in reporting, but always makes corrections to those stories as soon as new information is available.

Overall, we rate the New York Times Left-Center biased based on word and story selection that favors the left, but highly factual and considered one of the most reliable sources for information due to proper sourcing and well respected journalists/editors.

So as far the link is concerned- your link- the NYT is as good as anyone at reporting the facts, and that that must mean it does not distort the facts by omitting any of importance.

As far as emotionally loaded language (i.e. bias) goes, that is culpable only if it is misleading or distorted. Did Trump falsely blame the Democrats? Was there a mission to NK on behalf of Kushner? If so then there is nothing wrong with the statements, emotion or no emotion, and BTW how could anyone not get emotional about Jared Kushner trying to do business in NK?

As for the WSJ it does not get quite the glowing report that the NYT did, but there is nothing seriously wrong with the WSJ, either:

These media sources are slightly to moderately conservative in bias. They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favor conservative causes. These sources are generally trustworthy for information, but may require further investigation. See all Right-Center sources.

Factual Reporting: HIGH

And finally: your source establishes that Fox and Breibart cannot do better with the facts than the NYT. Are you going to tell me with a straight face that Fox and Breitbart are less emotional and that they less prone to distortion by omission?

And yet Trump states that Alex Jones "reputation is Amazing"- now there is a guy who is an enemy of the country.

First time I posted this I misspelled the other member's username.
