Proud to Be White?

Nowadays I get the sense that the "cool" thing to do is hate on white people simply for being white. We don't have to judge an individual for his actions or words, simply seeing that he is white is enough to solidify the belief that he must be less deserving of respect because he's one of "those" people.

So, all my fellow whities and pale skinned cretins, I must ask: Are you proud of yourself as a white individual, not simply because you are white, but because you are a white individual who deserves to be judged based on what you do, exactly the same as anyone else?

Proud to be an American

No, I am not especially proud of being white. My sense of community is pretty much disconnected from my race. And no, I don't have any problem being judged on my behavior because I am white. I have not felt any judgements or any discrimination based on my race. Frankly I don't know where your concerns are coming from. I never experienced any of this.

Actually it comes from dealing with a lot of a-holes and following the news but I'm glad your personal calculus is unblemished :applaud

Most Hispanic Americans have been here generations longer than the trump family that emigrated here to run from service in a world war. It’s in the family DNA.

No, I am more ashamed of my 3/4s that are white then at any other time in my life. I look at what is happening on the border and I pray for forgiveness.

OK, why? What specifically have you done that requires forgiveness?

I am proud of my accomplishments. Being white is not an accomplishment as I had nothing to do with that. I also am not ashamed of things I had nothing to do with.

Now, if I lived in a society where being white was a hinderance and I faced countless obstacles to achieving my goals because I was white, then I would probably be even MORE proud of my accomplishments. I am proud of of my accomplishments and the more obstacles I had to overcome to achieve those accomplishments the more proud I am.

It is that “overcoming obstacles” part that makes things like “black pride” or “gay pride” different than “white pride” in my book.

That cannot be overstated.

Essentially, minority pride is pride in society for individuals (and through them society) having overcome mindless prejudice. It's about the ability of someone to openly embrace their identity and for all of us to recognize social realities. It's celebrating empowerment and that's a celebration for everyone.

If a group has the vast majority of power and thus none of those issues, it's not the same thing.

It isn't what I have done. It's what we have done in the name of ethnic purity.

But when you say "we" you are insinuating that it means "you" and "I" have personally contributed to X offense, somehow. How have "we" done so?

We didn't stand up and say something. We let them break up families, scatter them across a continent, and hold the children in cages.

At least I didn't vote for and support the openly bigoted man behind it.

That is just one example.

I neither define myself nor gauge my self worth (pride), nor anyone else, by the color of skin. I've never understood why a person would take pride in something that they had absolutely nothing to do with. We can take pride in our country if we vote, we work, and/or we serve the country or numerous other reasons. We can have pride in ourselves based on our accomplishments, our impact on others, or many other actions that we take.

But Race? That's luck of the draw at birth. Nothing to be proud of there, or to be ashamed of either, it's just life.

But, maybe that's just me.

I think there is a point being missed here. People may say they are proud to be black, say, when for centuries that was viewed as something to be ashamed of or worried about. Ditto certain Latinos, who might have referred to themselves or had people call them “Spanish” back in the day, instead of Mexicans or Puerto Rican’s, which were almost insulting words in the past. Then there is the ethnic pride the Irish might show on St. Pat’s day or Italians on Columbus Day, with both groups perhaps recalling past prejudices they had to deal with. As to other white folks, who haven’t had to deal much with attacks on their whiteness (excepting some weird guilt-tripping that might occurr on campuses) there is a good reason to see ourselves as you say: just white.

Why do you approve of these types of threads?

gop Cultural Wars won’t win from now on.

I don't. How in the world do you get that from me poking at Calamity? He likes to get people riled up.

I doubt most of Europe would agree with you on that, but maybe

I usually know what I am talking about.

Penn State University researchers have found that a genetic mutation led to the rise of white skin when humans left Africa 20,000 to 50,000 years ago.

Imagine a world where everyone had brown skin. Tens of thousands of years ago, that was the case, say scientists at Pennsylvania State University. So, how did white people get here? The answer lies in that tricky component of evolution known as a genetic mutation.

Usually.

A couple minor objections/notes. The Irish and other nationality or ethnic prejudices are not necessarily or entirely race based; it is a demonized minority in question, but significant difference. White is not an ethnic group.

And the campus comment; how snowflake.

If you have something to say about it, leave it at that. It makes for a more productive discussion.

If you want productive discussion, resist subtle snide remarks.

As for your OP, "white" is a cultural illusion and a social construct. We are all an admixture of genes.

I am white and understand that this is something to be proud of and understand that non-white people are jealous of white people and desire to be white themselves. This is OK but something that they can not attain no matter how close Michael Jackson got to accomplishing the task.

I'm proud to be a surviving old white man........the most hated minority in America.

I plan to survive the current vendetta.

I will go to northern Idaho and live in a remote cabin.

I will be the last remaining old white man in America.

When the haters finally come to get me they will pay dearly for the privilege of achieving that culmination of their sick quest for ethnic purity.

I will die laughing at the bastards as I say "Adios, amigos," amidst their bloody and broken army.

Being proud of your race is stupid. Be proud of who you are. Be proud of what you do.

I'm proud of surviving!!

Except that you apparently at least said something. Are you now less complicit because you've said something to a bunch of strangers online? And who's "we" at this point? Are you talking about the country in general or are you still talking about white people? Because I'm pretty sure other people beside whites have supported our immigration policies over the years. I.e., it was the law under Obama but apparently it wasn't a problem then.
