FYI, this is the attempted walkback.

Original statement:
“My people came to me — [Director of National Intelligence] Dan Coats came to me and some others — they said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin; he just said it’s not Russia,” Trump said in Helsinki, standing next to Putin. “I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

The walkback today:
“In a key sentence in my remarks I said the word “would” instead of ‘wouldn’t.’ … The sentence should’ve been, and I thought it would be maybe a little but unclear on the transcript … ‘I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia.’ Sort of a double negative. You can put that in and I think that probably clarifies things by itself.”

He didn't "walkback" anything.

He just repeated the truth he's been telling all along--Russia may have done some hacking and others may have also done some hacking.

Nobody knows for sure.

Much ado about almost nothing.......and not a shred of actual evidence to be seen anywhere.

“I accept our intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia meddling in the 2016 election took place. Could have been other people also. Lots of other people out there.”
 
What Trump did reminds me of a 300 pound mayor of a town who gets roaring drunk one night and runs into the street without any clothes offending all who see him. People call the police and loudly complain and they go to the mayors house to arrest him. He waves a copy of the city ordinance in front of him saying that it clearly says he cannot expose his penis to the public. He then states that he had wrapped his penis in saran wrap before he ran out so he technically did not break the law. But because it was nighttime and he is obese and his large gut hangs so low - nobody will ever really know.

The police really do not want to be bothered and do not want to risk getting into trouble losing their jobs over this so they pretend to accept the mayors story and do not arrest him.

Trump's excuse yesterday was nothing more than a saran wrap fig leaf and anybody who buys it is only fooling themselves because they want to fool themselves.

Reports this morning say the whole thing was set up by members of the GOP leadership who told John Kelly that they needed political cover and the president had better provide it soon. The result was the sham you saw yesterday.

Exactly. It reminds me of the old joke about a husband who has a long history of cheating on his indulgent wife. She comes home one afternoon and finds hubby in bed putting it to a woman who happens to be a very small midget working in the circus which happens to be in town. As he climbs out of bed and puts on his clothes, she screams at him and throws a picture frame at him in anger. He points to the little lady and says in all sincerity......."Helen, I promised you I was trying to cut down."

And she gives him credit for his efforts.

Yes, that sounds about right for what it would take to be able to sleep at night still supporting this guy. Incompetence is easier to deal with than treason allegations, I guess...and yes, the inclusion of the word allegation was deliberate.
