Cut Militaty Budget in Half

Should US cut Military budget by 50%

The defense budget is seemingly bloated. By how much I'm not sure.

But I'm totally against cutting programs like Social Security, Medicare, CHIPs, etc. to over-fund the military.

There has to be a better happy medium. And to be honest, I don't see any nation on this planet invading the US.

Our Military budget is $600 Billion. If we cut it in half, that would give each man woman and child in America roughly a $1000 in their pocket or $3000 to each tax payer depending on how you want to do your math.

IMO, we can easily protect our nation on $300B annually, probably could even do it for $100B if we tried. But, for now, lets just consider cutting it in half.

We'll have to withdraw from NATO. I thought y'all were ****ting yourselves over that possibility?

By 50%? No, that's overkill. However, the Pentagon needs to learn to do more with less. And building tanks just to bury them in a desert doesn't help, either.

That's called "war stock". We can't deploy an army with equipment that's already worn out from training use.

Then quit deploying

Prove that we can run the military under the current world situation with a 100 Billion, then you have a discussion.

What if we have to fight a war on our own soil? Then what?

Who has enough naval landing ships and troop air transports to invade US soil and hold it?

Lol. Maybe aliens. But nobody on this rock.

Liberals would be the first to scream to high heaven if we were attacked by either Russia, China or some other nut case government and wonder why we weren't prepared.

Liberals would probably be the last to volunteer to service if we were attack. All the safe rooms would loaded to capacity and Canadian/US border would be overwhelmed.

The DOD has been in violation of federal law in failing to account for what it spends for decades. They can’t even prove what they spend the money on let alone whether they actually need it. So we should take a meat cleaver to their budget and start demoting and sending people to prison until they can.

Why do you hate tax cuts?

Why do you hate paying for American servicemen who have to patrol the Mediterranean with at least one task force under some past agreement with the Euro's who are too ****ing lazy to keep an eye on their own back door?

Russia attacked our electoral process and tried to undermine democracy. What was the right wings response?

Yup....

"...The Pentagon has buried an internal study that exposed $125 billion in administrative waste in its business operations amid fears Congress would use the findings as an excuse to slash the defense budget, according to interviews and confidential memos obtained by The Washington Post...."

There's $125 billion that could be cut from defense spending.

That's easy. Change the mission to defense.

Done

"Nobody loves a soldier until the enemy is at the gate" (author unknown to me). That statement wraps up the whole thing for me. A strong defense is absolutely necessary in the world.

No..... you failed to ask why the lazy Euro's cannot patrol the Med with their own men and equipment.

The US is obligated to keep a task force in the Med per the agreement made well before you and I were puking strained peas in our high chairs.

They can't because they dont have to. Break the agreement

It would be impossible as the reason the current situation is stable due to US involvement around the world.

I would actually be in favor of moving to a more defensive position, but the same people crying about military spending will be the ones crying for the US to move in and stop some tragedy. The downside of removing US presence overseas would be an increase wars.

Protect our nation for 300B? Easily, but that isn't the issue. We are essentially the world's police force for a cut like that you would have to withdraw our forces and close bases around the world leaving countries to fend for themselves. It would go back to preWW2 era fighting in Europe and eventually lead to WW3.

Actually, the fy2017 defense budget is $582.7B and that's $40B less than the average defense spending between 2009 and 2016.

iow, this first year's cut to the average American is $40B / 325M = $125.31 so at this rate you'll probably 'pocket' your $1,000 by the 2024.

Our military is not necessarily used to protect our Nation's people but is used to protect the personal agendas of those in control.

Our problem is not spending but what we get per dollar for our military spending, russia and china have mostly state controlled military r&d, meaning there is no for profit bloated projects to keep asking for more money and force a country to buy a second version of something because the first version never met up to it's name.

I have no problem with 600 billion a year if we get 600 billion a year, but the second most powerfull military on earth can achieve similar results with one tenth the budget, indicate too much bloat and too many sweetheart contracts to milk the govt for money rather than provide for defense.

well the people that say there should not be any restrictions on the kind of weapons they own so they can defend us form the government if it goes rouge should love this idea

I mean, the right has folk like Ted Nugent and Donald Trump's who dodged the draft, so it may not just be limited to "the left".
