Weird-accented Yankee. :p

Actually, I don't remember you having a noticeable northern accent. Do you?

I'm around a lot of Hispanic people all of the time. I hear "Anglo" much more than "Gringo".

I forgot to edit..... I hear "Anglo" and "English" much more than "Gringo".

Does Josie identify more with the South? Uh oh!

I try to overcome the influence of the Norwegians, Germans, and the Swedes on my accent. I have yet to fully succeed.

Well, I've lived in both places. I prefer the South, really. But Southerns laugh at my "Northern" accent, so I guess I'm a Yankee. :)

I recently got a warning for using the shortened term for Japanese in a reference to WWII, I also mentioned how we referred to Germans in the day etc. but only a Japanese member got upset. If you want to call my Gringo, go ahead, what's the big freaking deal?

I do think I'll start crying to the mods here when someone calls me a NAZI from now on, I do have German blood, careful libs.

Sounds like sauerkraut to me.

I constantly hear this term used to refer to Americans in almost ALL of Latin America. If you heard this, would it bother you? One term that does offend me though is "marajá". It means someone who got their high paying job through patronage. Think of it as a "no show" employee on the payroll.

Don't give a ****. I don't have a chip on my shoulder.

I lived my first 28 years in the north and much longer than that down here in the south. I was quite surprised when I first moved down here and people accused me of having a northern accent. I had always assumed that people down here in the south knew that it was THEY who had the southern accent. People up north don't have an accent, except for those in the NYC/New England area.

One of my roommates was from deep southern Alabama. She always made fun of my "northern accent" especially the word "pajamas".

I've been called all sorts of things in my lifetime. Nothing bothered me. I viewed it a reflection on those calling others names than anything else. If someone wants to call me names, so be it. But don't expect any help or support from me. By calling others names you proved your unworthiness to me.

Yes, because for hundreds of years, my white ancestors were dragged south of the border in chains, sold off like cattle, beaten, whipped, spit on, while our Latin masters called us "gringo slaves"...

Oh, wait. It wasn't the whites who were slaves, it was blacks; and it wasn't in Latin America, it was in North America; and blacks weren't abused and called "gringos"; blacks were abused and called "n******".

Hmm. Maybe that's why even today when a white person calls a black person a n*****, that black person has every right to be bothered by it.
He has every right to ne bothered about being valled a nigger and i have every right to care that ot bothers him. Both sides need to grow up

I’m surprised you missed the point. You’re usually pretty sharp.

Hint 1: think of Eco’s standard argument about racism, and why he is right about it.

Hint 2: who holds the power?

Given the answer to #2; I really do not take offense over what names the oppressed call me.
Stop oppressing people so you can ne appropiately offended when you been insulted

I live in Arizona and can't remember the last time I heard the word.

As a native Texan, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard Gringo said by any Hispanics. And yes, it’s pejorative, but I can think of a lot Spanish words that are way more pejorative.

The word I most often hear is “pendejo”, which is also mildly pejorative. It’s usually said to other Hispanics. That said, when I’ve heard it said about an Anglo, it’s sometimes warranted.

You travel a lot in Latin America? Where is that? Everywhere south of the USA, or the southwestern states too?

I have been to every US state except Hawaii. I visit Latin America every chance I get. The most frequent countries are: Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and once French Guiana. I hope to visit Colombia soon and MAYBE, if I get trustworthy assistance, Venezuela

One notable time I was referred to as a gringo is when someone was actually standing up for me, yelling at someone, saying "you're just overcharging him because he's a gringo".

Hey, Buddy! Why don't you go out for Mexican tonight? You can try to order the entire kitchen staff to go!

My wife calls me a gringo. Usually it goes something like “Hey you sound like a gringo.”

And no it doesn’t bother me.

I lived in TX for 6 years, back in the 90's and since have visited San Antonio almost every month. I've never been called or heard the word, Gringo used in real life.

Sorry I don't share your hang up over that word.

Is that your racist opinion. You assume everyone in a kitchen is mexican.

Hey, have you ever heard the joke, "The only Mexican you'll ever make happy is the one that digs your grave?". I'm guessing you have.
