That percentage would be lower for those who affiliate themselves with any of Putin's political opposition. For God's sake, whatever you do, stay off of the balconies of tall Russian buildings.

My dad the alcoholic warned me to never drink vodka, it goes down too easy. He did this after George Chase and his lovely wife Virginia (She had legs better than Tina Turner) retired from Chicago to Lake Havasu City.....then both drank themselves to death in less than 8 years out of boredom mostly. They were too proud to admit that they had made a mistake moving away from all that they knew and family and friends.

Russia has never had a stable democracy. Closest they ever came was in the '90s, and that was when they had a joke of a leader.

On that note, having a strong leader is something that Russians value, which could explain Putin's rise into his de facto authoritarian role.

Well, some of this is because of a collective melancholy that leads to bad habits that hurt health. Decades of poor economic performance and a lack of socioeconomic and religious freedoms took its toll during the Cold War. Throughout, Russians were constantly bombarded with bans on religion with a state-run propaganda machine that presented Stalin-like figures, who stood in for God, as lifting the communist people into utopia. It was a Godless, nationalistic religion. Along the way, they witnessed the severe difference in economic and social health between West Berlin and East Berlin. It was no mystery that the Berlin Wall was more about keeping them in, rather than keeping the far more successful Westerners out. Well, then the Soviet Union lost the Cold War, the national gods died, and all of that sense of national identity, that they were barely holding onto, went to hell.

Normally, people who lack freedom under autocracy tend to crave more secular, or liberty-inspired rational values in their government. We see this in the Middle East and in Eastern Europe. For the Russians, after the Cold War ended, the economic plunging saw them, en masse, turn towards religion for answers. They did the complete opposite of what they were instructed to do for decades. Desperation usually brings God into the equation. But before the end of the Cold War, Russians had created a culture of alcoholism to go along with that growing melancholy. Even Gorbachev, or "Lemonade Joe," tried to address the problem by limiting sales of wine and vodka in 1985. His attempt merely led to a loss in tax revenue and an actual sever sugar shortage because Russians began making home-brewed liquor to often poisonous effect. Lack of sugar also led to an ice cream shortage, which is one of the Russian's most loved foods. Underneath all of this was that depression among the population and it had grown since WWII. All these seemingly small, but actually big, details have affected the Russian life span. Even the birth rate dropped by 10.6 per cent in 2017. So many even dismiss the idea of making a family. This has been a trend.

Russians, collectively, are not a very happy people.

Retirement age in the USA, for those born after 1960, is 67 years old. I was born many years later, and by the time I'm close to retirement, the official retirement age will probably be 90.
