Are you the kind if person who gets angry or even afraid when you hear others around you speaking in a language you don't understand?

If you're an American citizen, do you get angry when people in America speak a language that isn't English?

Would you ever confront someone speaking a language you don't understand and yell at them to stop speaking that way?

Personally, I find foreign languages quite intriguing and often times beautiful to listen to.
When members of the opposite sex speak a language I don't understand it can quickly become quite sexy in my mind.

I can't imagine getting pissed off at anyone for simply speaking in a language I don't understand.

No, never. It's completely irrational.

I pretty much dont do anger anymore, I cant remember the last time I was angry though it might have been 4 years ago when responders closed down three lanes of Northbound I-5 when they only needed to close one lane (in an abundance of caution for the safety of the responders) causing a horrific back-up as I was trying to get to my daughters UW graduation ceremony.

Nope. I personally enjoy listening to other languages. The only time I EXPECT a person to use the language of majority where they are is if they are performing a customer service function.

Also, some conversations work better in different languages. There is usually a lot of humor in conversations among friends and humor is something that just doesn’t translate well.

Never. Why would I? I admire people who are multilingual. And it's never my business what language people speak to each other. I don't care if you speak Spanish, German, French, Ubi Dubbi, Nell Twin Speak, or the mystical language only your imaginary friend understood.

And people who confront others who aren't speaking English are jackoffs.

The real question is this: why are we allowing people to immigrate who can't speak English? Does that really benefit Americans?

You're not only un-American, you probably want the communist Nicaraguans to continue planning for their big invasion of the USA.

Sure, sure, that'll be great, then we'll all be speaking Nicaraguanese.

When my language is the ‘foreign’ one, I am very self conscious of my surroundings. I think one can be rude no matter what language you are speaking. There is a substantial lack of courtesy worldwide.

It could benefit the many woefully ignorant Americans a great deal.

The real question is, why do so many Americans support such a lying, racist, sexual predator president?

No not all even though I actually support requirements that new arrivals have at least a tiny bit of English under their belt.
But still, listening to people speak other languages doesn't have any effect on me at all, unless they're trying to insist on speaking to me in a language that I DO not understand. In a case like that, it doesn't make me mad but it might make me laugh.
They're probably assuming I am one of them, and that's okay except that I'm not.
It's always funny when Arabs assume I speak Arabic. I look like I could pass for Egyptian or Iranian at least to other Egyptians or Iranians anyway.

I have enough basic Spanish that I can get by with rudimentary communication, and a lifetime ago I was beginning to grasp some Russian, but I've forgotten almost all of that now, unfortunately.

I don't even understand WHY hearing other people speaking to each other should bother anyone at all.
I just don't get what the problem is.

If they start yammering at me in Spanish, which happens all the time as well, I try to respond for a little bit but I usually am quick to say "Necesitamos usar inglés porque no puedo hablar mucho español."

"We need to use English because I don't speak much Spanish."

And that usually makes them laugh instead...and more often than not they usually try.

do i get angry? no

do i sometimes wonder why someone that has been here a number of years hasnt really tried to assimilate...yeah

especially those that work in service industries type jobs....

if you are waiting on customers, it does really help if you speak OUR native language

i spent four years in Germany as an enlisted man....and when out on the economy, i attempted to speak German....was i great at it....probably not so much...i took what they called a conversational German class for $ 25 when i got there, and it taught me the basics....but because i tried, the merchants were gracious and most of the time helped me out

Absolutely not. I always make it a game to guess what language they're speaking. Sometimes it's quite obvious, when they're speaking one of the Western European languages. Other times, not so much.

It makes me angry at myself for not having the ability.

I don't get angry about it no.

Though, I think it can be a little rude if people are American citizens and they choose to speak their native language in public around people. Is it something I am going to get angry about? No... but it can seem like you are being cryptic and being intentionally exclusive. I really don't care that much in the end, but I recognize it is good manners.

Do I get frustrated when I can't order at a restaurant because the server has terrible English? Yea... that's bad customer service.

Also, if you lived here for more than 4+ years and still can barely speak the language whatsever.... yea, that's annoying.

There is no country on the planet I think that would be appropriate. If I moved to Japan, I would try my best to learn Japanese ASAP...especially if I plan on being a permanent resident. Same for ANYWHERE. It would be stupid not to. I would also refrain from speaking english in front of the native population if I could in public(unless I was with someone who didn't understand anything but english of course), because I would find it rude... though, in a lot of places they may just assume you are a foreigner/vacationer and wouldn't. That isn't the case in the USA... when I see anyone, I assume they are American, unless it becomes obvious otherwise.

Not rational, but in an elevator scenario where people are talking in another language, I will often assume they are talking about me, especially if I'm tired or frustrated (about something else) and become angry, though I'd never confront someone over that. Maybe a sour look.

So that's just misdirected anger\paranoia, I think.

Am I going to hell, DP?

Not rude at all. If they're not speaking to me, it's none of my business and it's not rude.

Sure, when I am asking an employee of a business a question and they turn and speak in a language I can't understand to another employee it irritates me.
It's rude, IMHO to do in front of customers.

I get angry when movies in English feature English-speaking people with strong accents, forcing me to turn on the subtitles, which then present such necessary texts as "laughing," "happy music," or "cat thrown out window."

Otherwise, no, non English speaking people don't annoy me.

I personally try to figure out what dialect it is. I live in a very diverse area myself and I run into a lot of oriental people and Hispanic people. I can pick out the Puerto Rican dialect which is easiest one to pick out they talk really fast Guatemalan dialect and the Mexican dialect of Spanish. I'm actually trying to learn to speak that language fluently. The Far Eastern languages intrigue me it's amazing how different they are. The only one that throws me for a loop are the Filipino people their language I think is a dialect of Spanish but I'm not sure it's hard to nail down.

Maybe I'm weird that I'm interested in that but I never really got angry about it are there people that do?

There's that "me me me me" American conceit/attitude again. To let you know how silly it is, Hawkeye, your daughter's graduation doesn't mean **** in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't actually mean **** to you now. You don't spend any time thinking about it, ooohhh and aaaaawwww about what a great event, what a grand day it was.

BUT from the limited info you gave there was a good reason for the shutdown. It could have involved lives.

probably a decent chance that he has some non-English heritage, as so many white people do. i'm sure that they just all sauntered in speaking perfect English while ducking the rocks thrown at them by the xenophobes of the time.

Sweet. I PM'd that to myself to read (or listen to) later this evening.

The poster I was responding to has a long history here of rabid fear and hatred of Hispanics, at the very least. Which is sad, really, but 100x worse given that he claims to live in Southern California.
