Chula Vista, Calif., artist Sasha Andrade painted a mural with an image of President Trump's decapitated head on a spear. (KUSI)

On the charter school’s mural, an Aztec warrior triumphantly lifts a human heart as if it were a trophy. But that’s not what has sparked outrage in Chula Vista, Calif., just outside San Diego.

Another warrior in a jaguar skin headdress clutches an outstretched spear with the decapitated head of President Trump impaled on the end — a graphic display that led the school to cover the mural while the artist modifies the image.

The mural drew heated debate on social media and locally in Chula Vista, a city of a quarter of a million people heavily populated by Hispanics and about 10 miles from the border with Mexico.

The mural was only painted over after pictures were uploaded online, and people complained. The school, and local community were apparently fine with it until outside pressure mounted.

Does this kind of violent hatred on our schools concern you? Please explain why or why not.

Of course it concerns me, it just no longer surprises me. This is our new social and political climate, and no one gets a pass as if they are some golden child of inclusion and peaceful discourse.

And people wonder why he won the presidency.

This is no more and no less concerning than those who hanged Obama in effigy

If this had been somewhere other than a school I'd probably agree with you. However it was done at a school, a public one at that. That is what makes it concerning beyond your normal everyday burning an effigy in a street.

It seems a bit inappropriate for a school no matter whose severed head it is.

I mean...it obviously has a pretty clear political message going on...not sure it particularly suggests that anyone should get all geared up in Aztec ritual garb, put his head on a spear, and let everyone check out his heart... It's strong, pretty over the top aggressive symbolism, but as rocket pointed out, it's probably within the parameters of what a president can expect from their haters, regardless of who they are...

I think it's way too over the top for anything I could relate to, but I'm sure the SS can handle some pissed off graffiti artist. As for the community response, I guess I'd have to understand how common a problem graffiti was in general to understand if this was politically motivated, for just general disinterest in a common phenomenon. Chances are the fact that Chula Vista is 57.8% hispanic might make it understandable if the give a **** factor is a little less about anti Trump stuff. Doesn't mean they are going to go en masse rise up and sacrifice Trump to the Sun god... hehe

Not my thing, but you guys tolerate a lot in the name of your 1st amendment, I don't see how this is any worse than the Obama stuff, or burning crosses, or going bat**** crazy in the name of fighting fascism, or flashing Swastikas, or tweeting like a 15 year old on a rage tantrum after losing too many times on Call of Duty... It fits right in in the pantheon of unclassy **** you guys have going on at the moment. #MAGA ;) I wouldn't be too worried. hehe

Only thing I disagree with is the "a bit inappropriate" part. I'd say it was REALLY inappropriate. Severed heads, no matter whose it is, should not be painted on the side of any school building.

I'm not a fan of this kind of art or the emotion that drives it. I can understand people disliking politicians, but symbolic actions promoting their harm is a distraction from dealing with the issues which is what really brings about the change. If you don't like a politician, get involved in politics and advocate for the people who best represent your interests. As for this being at a school, I don't agree with that either because not only wouldn't I want children exposed to that kind of imagery, but it's also a disrespectful of the office of the presidency. Regardless of my general disagreement with Trump's agenda and style of communication, I still respect the presidency.

Most Americans consider it one of our most important Rights. Without it a lot of things probably wouldn't have happened in this country. Such as the Civil Rights Movement.

The First Amendment protects the right to create such art, but it doesn't guarantee that the product will be tastefully done.

This type of statement is no different than what the right did with obama but it has no place on a public school like that IMO.

I think someone should check the artist's citizenship status.

This is why trump got elected b/c people like this. Hateful leftists pretty much.

Oh? Did someone paint a mural on the side of a school of Obama's severed head?

And it doesn't prevent public outcry...as the school and the artist are finding out.

Learn to actually read. I said the statement was the same, not where it was located. I even said it doesn’t belong on a school. Now go forth and foam elsewhere conny.

Probably, Obama didn't inspire that level of hate. That's what's happening here, people hating the President.

I lived in southern Cali RIGHT next to the border and I can assure you that a good 10% of mexicans in that area hated me just because I was white.
They used to call me "white fly" and taunt me by getting in my face and telling me that they were going to take California back from white people and start hanging us. This was when I was like 12 years old so i imagine those 12 year olds had to be getting it from somewhere... (their dad)

Or when they were walking past you they would scream BROWN PRIDE!!!! right in your face.

It was actually kinda scary to experience as a boy, because even adults would be hostile. (from my experience)

To anyone being bullied by mexican cholo gangster kids at school seeing this mural must have been incredibly disheartening. Especially the fact that it stayed up for so long. I would have moved my kid out of that area immediately.

I dont understand why the artist wasnt expelled. If it had been a little white kid drawing guns shooting people on his school paper he would have been expelled immediately.

I mean... Painting a giant mexican flag on a school wall and decapitated American president..... How is noone expelled??? Why arent people asking the princpal how he could allow this?

If someone painting a giant mural of black people being lined up and hung and the staff let it stay up for weeks and weeks I expect **** to get done....

No, sorry, this isn't why he got elected, this is the result of his election. He inspires hate in Americans.
This can't end well.

No people like you are the reason for him winning. You just won't accept that and think He only won because he inspires hate. Pathetic dude.

Trump must have run into one of the myriad US trained death squads. Or he was mistaken for an orangutan by people hunting bush meat.

Far far too many of you folks don't believe in FofS and the 1stA.

Good to see that even in charter schools there are young people who think.

"The school, and local community were apparently fine with it until outside pressure mounted."

If this is a true feeling of the community the problem is much larger that we think.
The hate for president Trump is never ending. Something like this mural should never be on public property especially a school. Use your first amendment right and put it on private property and then face the consequence of doing something so foolish.
I feel it's a warped mind that would do something like this.

You have the right to say or paint anything, just not on public property and if you're willing to face the consequences.

It bothers me as much as the cartoons showing the Obama's hanging from a tree.
