Do you know that was for only two months? Do you know NYC is the MODEL of a safe city due to gun control?

Ok, so what about Chicago and DC. They have much higher murder rates than many American cities despite gun control. Sure, you have St Louis and New Orleans where gun control isn't as strong and have high murder rates but those two are far from being the safest.

Every developed country with effective gun control has low gun deaths. We have lax gun laws and the highest gun ownership in the world and the most gun deaths of any developed nation.

Its not hard to see the problem folks.

Russian citizens over 18 years of age can obtain a firearms licence after attending gun-safety classes and passing a federal test and background check. The licence is for five years and may be renewed. Firearms may be acquired for self-defense, hunting, or sports activities. Carrying permits may be issued for hunting firearms licensed for hunting purposes. Initially, purchase is limited to smooth-bore long-barred firearms and pneumatic weapons with a muzzle energy of up to 25 joules (18 ft⋅lbf). After five years of shotgun ownership, rifles may be purchased. Handguns are generally not allowed. Rifles and shotguns with barrels less than 500 mm (20 in) long are prohibited, as are firearms that shoot in bursts and have more than a 10-cartridge capacity. Suppressors are prohibited. An individual cannot possess more than ten guns (up to five shotguns and up to five rifles) unless they are part of a registered gun collection.
These are the gun laws of Russia. I have two questions.

Is Russia a developed country?

Do you consider the above to be effective gun laws?

If the answer to the first is "yes" then your statement about the US having the highest murder rate of any developed country is false because Russia has roughly half the population but had roughly the same number of homicides in 2015. If you consider these to be effective gun laws, then why is the murder rate in Russia higher than in the US?

They are within 20 minutes of places with lax gun control. Now take NYC. You have to drive over an hour to get to a place with lax gun control. NYC is the safest large city in america.

Russia is not a developed country. It is ranked as one of the most corrupt countries and it is very easy for the russian mafia to pay off police so they can buy guns. Without rule of law gun control is pointless

I am impressed by your confidence.:)

In any case, "liklihood" is irrelevant. I carry just about everywhere. I have reached the age of 69, and, though having been shot at, I have never been shot. I am pretty sure that I am doing something right.

I have never been shot or shot at. I don't know of anyone personally who has during my 67 years outside a military setting. So, likewise, I must be doing something right to even a stronger degree than you. However, we can't use personal data as a reflection of overall risk to the total population. Likelihood or probability is relevant to the larger group. Where there are guns, there will be more gun related incidents. Where there are more cars there will be more car accidents. Where alcohol is legal there will be more cases of drunk driving etc...

Want to decrease the likelihood of being shot at or being shot? Stay away from guns.

Thanks for the advice!

Want a way to avoid being misused by evil people? Buy a gun and learn how to use it.

To each his own... good luck to you! If your situation calls for owning a gun and you find the inherent risk of ownership worth it in the face of the potential danger posed by others then go for it. That's your call.

It can work, but it has to be a smart policy and should start from a situation with fewer weapons in a society than the United States has. I am sure European style gun control will not work because there are just way too many guns on the market/in people's hands.

So you can work smarter rather than more rigorous. For example banning semi automatic guns, sawn off shotguns, high capacity magazine bans, strict background checks, making background checks also for private weapon sales, allowing law enforcement ATF to use computers, taking guns on forced or voluntary stay at a mental hospital, take away guns in cases of stalking, domestic violence with death threats, etc. etc. etc.

Going to Euro style is not going to work, too many guns for that and too much country side where having weapons is a real necessity. So just make gun restrictions that make sense and are supported by the large majority of the US public, that is the best one can do if there is no willingness. And anyway, in the US there is a lot more hunting and country side where the police is a long way away in case of crisis so having guns to protect yourself from violence and animals is logical. Like with the Kilchers and the people from Alaska railroad, people like that cannot live without guns to protect themselves from mountain lions, bears, wolves, etc. Or the need them to shoot animals so that they can feed themselves.

That is something that is not that usual/needed in Europe. Hunting here is rare, dangerous animals are even more rare so for those reasons needing weapons is less evident in Western Europe. We cannot compare the 2 areas, our gun laws are a non-starter in the US just like US gun laws are a non-starter in our countries because that is something we have not been raised to believe in. Just like people in the US have not been raised to believe in a gun-light society.
