It appears she was drunk?

What an embarrassment.

LOL, that was horrific. No way could I finish that.

The national anthem isn't really be open to major stylistic interpretation. People expect to hear something that reasonably sounds what they expect the anthem to sound like.

Whoever told her she should make the song her's probably needs to be fired.

It was weird to say the least. At time I thought she was trying to channel Billie Holiday and at other times perhaps trying to bring on an orgasm. I greatly prefer Ray Charles doing AMERICA.

I think it sounded exactly like what she was going for. But what she was going for was a style that just doesn’t go with that song.

The song sounds it’s best when it is kept simple. The problem is it takes a very good voice to pull that off. Whitney and Beyonce and a few others understood that.

Jesus that was bad.

Like the national anthem isn't one of those songs that really fits with every style. Credit to the people who make it work but it's not the most flexible of musical pieces.

That reminds me of the worthless "group critique" sessions in art school. One student would make a critique about another student's painting, and the second student would invariably reply, "I meant to do that." One of my life's main regrets is that I never had the guts to reply back, "Yeah, and what you meant to do was a terrible idea."

She's no Whitney Houston on that song.

I watched a video showing the reactions of some of the NBA players trying to stay composed. It legit had me belly laughing.

The cut aways to the players was hysterical.
I've never heard he anthem sung quite like this, and God willing, it will never be repeated.

Nah, I don't think she was drunk.

I think she did a stylistic interpretation, and it didn't work.

Yeah, here and there I thought I heard bits of Marilyn Monroe's JFK "Happy Birthday" in there.

It was planned and intentional sarcasm.

Her rendition was a poorly concealed validation of the thugs that have been refusing to stand for the National Anthem.

She ridiculed our flag.

You could see it in her smirky expression and the open laughter of some of the more radical America-hating thugs (like Labron James) who were enjoying the show.

The more patriotic players looked embarrassed. It WAS an embarrassment to America.

So.......yawn. Just more stupid thuggery.

Am I the only one who thought the "Let's play some basketball!" actually managed to be the most cringeworthy part?

The whole point of the reformulated All Star game was supposed to be that it would not be boring because most of the guys did not want to be there...they would have rather have had the time off....."Let's play some basketball!" signaled that this year would be different, and I hear that it was.

EDIT: See post #23.

You Sir might very well be correct.

"I've always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best."
Fergie Apologizes for NBA All-Star Game National Anthem | TMZ.com

Either that or she did exactly what she wanted to do but since she did get cheered for it she is disowning it.

Another strange one:

I get the idea that she is allergic to doing it straight, disrespect for the history of it likely is in the mix of reasons.

"LET'S PLAY SOME FOOTBALL AMERICA!:....OK, now I get it.

This is what the anthem would sound like if you turned an un-spayed cat into a human and then had them sing while they were in heat.

Just... wow.

The proposed NEW National Anthem:

It's time to retire the old Welsh drinking song, originally titled "To Anachreon in Heav'n", the melody of which was intentionally composed to be so difficult to sing that taverns held contests. Anyone who hit a sour note or flubbed a line had to buy a round for the bar.

That's what the melody of The Star Spangled Banner was taken from. I suspect that F. Scott Key wasn't all that serious about his poem to use such a trifling melody when he could have had a proper tune composed for a few meager coins.

America the Beautiful, especially as sung by Ray Charles, is a love poem, a poem which sings the praises of the blessings we have, our beauty, our hopes and dreams. We can do much better than the turgid moribund rendition of a foreign drinking song.

Besides, all those God-fearing types would get a kick out of the fact that ATB is all Godded up to the teeth and back again, whereas SSB doesn't even mention the Big Guy once. What's wrong with you people, I thought you loved God all over your money, your politics and your schools, so why not pick a national anthem that goes all God in all the right places?
