Up to the President!?

If a Private First Class has to have a security clearance to work a man-pack radio then an aide to the President of the United States (the most powerful man on the planet) better damn well have a clearance. And since it only takes weeks to a couple of months to attain a clearance in the military, there should be zero people up that high in government with no clearances a year and half into the seated President's term.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA) included timeliness requirements for the security clearance process.

By December 2009, 90% of initial security clearance determinations must be completed within an average of 60 days
40 days for investigative phase
20 days for adjudicative phase

By 2009, all the existing problems in the process was supposed to have been sorted out. It is absolutely not up to the President to whimsically appoint his childhood besty (or in this case his nanny) to review national security issues if it pleases him. There is a guideline and our government is in gross and disgusting violation of it.

You are right. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't read it because I haven't checked anyones clearances. I get news from the news to save myself the trouble of investigative journalism.

YOU are not answering the questions. I am asking you approve of the process having people without clearances having access to the white house and classified information. For all presidents. Of every party.

You are assuming they have access.

If the FBI Director is telling the truth, I find it hard to rationalize Mr.

This thread is SPECIFICALLY about the notion in a hypothetical fashion and not about any specific administration. As such, I'm not going to speculate or discuss or debate matters regarding specific cases with this administration.

Quick background story here.

To be clear I am not asking if past presidents did it. Please don't derail this topic into what Obama, Bush, Clinton, and Lincoln had. This topic is specific to these questions.

Should everyone who has access to classified information have security clearances? Should people have security clearance to be in the white house and hold top positions in our government?

I am asking for a universal answer for all presidents. Whether they are in your party or not.

AFAIK everyone at the WH has a temporary security clearance. I'm fairly sure the president is (hypothetically) the most qualified person to make an assessment about whether or not somebody should receive a security clearance.

Not clear to what extent that applies to the current president, but as a general statement, I think it's reasonable to give presidents leeway in terms of who they give a temporary security clearance to.
