Owners. Animals are property. People need to grow up and deal with it.

I voted neither because they are both, in my opinion. Owners, when it comes to matters of the law, from license requirements and all other legal and financial matters. Guardian's, because they are totally dependent on you for their care and needs. I believe for most of us they are members of our family and we would put them above some of our human members (lol) and certainly above many people in general.

So your response brings to mind many questions. Are you free to treat said property in any manner you see fit, do you feel you have any responsibility in the care and maintenance of your 'property' or like your old car rusting in the back yard, it's your business only?

I weigh 215 at 6'. My wife weighs 108 at 5'5". My dog, 121 at 40" at the shoulder. My midget cat weighs 3lbs at almost 6". She rules.

My dog sees me as the alpha dog, but good for food and a belly rub.
My wife sees me as the guy who thinks he's the alpha dog, but good for food and a belly rub.
My cat says "What's an alpha dog?" But she sees me as good for food and a belly rub, and likes to bite my ears before napping on my shoulders.

Yeah, I own the animals. Who am I kidding?

The other day, I heard my dog ask my cat, "What's with the guy who gives us food who takes me for walks? Why does he pickup my poop?"

Do people owns pets, or do people just care for them? Many people have strong opinions on this. The linked article does a good job of discussing the pros and cons in a rational manner. Where do you fall?

Overindulgence in pets is an outward sign of a declining civilization, the Romans correctly noted the fashion more than 2000 years ago.

This is not to say that fondness and companionship of working and hunting dogs isn't natural. But petting cats who show no inclination toward earning their place in the household is difficult to understand.

Guardians - Yes
Owners ---- Yes
Companions - Yes

But so much more.

We are also the recipients of their loyalty and devotion that we do not deserve. I would rather spend time with my dogs than with most humans.

In a perfect world, our pets would never get sick or die.

I'd say that we own our pets, since we're legally allowed to kill them (circumstances vary).

Personally, I think we should move more towards the "guardian" idea, then maybe we'd have less mistreatment of pets.

But...

God damned animal welfare state......

Maybe I've misjudged you, Howard. We also 'get sick and die.'

Yea, people suck. Animals are cool!

I would say both. The legal owners (thus ownership papers, ID tags/chips etc) and also the guardians/custodians of their health and welfare.

I can do so in any way allowed by law, just as I can with my car.

That was so helpful. Now I see the light. Thank you.

People need to stop anthropomorphizing animals. They are not people, they are animals.

You own your pet, you are a guardian for your child.

My dogs own me...:2razz:

Well see, that's where you have it wrong. Cats don't earn their place in the household, we are to be happy they grace us with their presence. And we have to earn the right to pet them.

If you can buy it, and you can sell it, it is property and you own it.

People can say their dog is family, or it is wrong to treat them like property ect and wouldn't be wrong but it doesn't change that you own them and that makes you an owner.

Owners.

There are, of course, standards mandated by society on how one treats animals, even livestock. I'm ok with that as long as it is reasonable.

Just let your cat scratch the neighbor kid, or let your dog bite the mailman. The judge at your civil hearing will settle the debate for you pretty fast.

"No, Your Honor... You don't understand! I'm just Spot's guardian... Nobody owns Spot!"
