mandatory? i don't know. maybe. civics / government and history should definitely be emphasized more, though.

i took a debate class on the academic track in high school. one of the most eye opening experiences was having to argue the opposing viewpoint. in my case, it was arguing for age limits to purchase gangster rap. i was a big fan of the genre, and pretty much everyone knew it. i did win the debate, though. i sometimes wonder if it would be fun to argue from the opposing view again. in my transitional phase between libertarian and independent, i used to run my own message board, and i socked as an absolutist laissez faire poster even though i didn't support the concept. i found that position difficult to defend, but it was definitely interesting.
For what it's worth, there's a Meyers-Briggs personality definition that is one of the very narrowest personality types. I believe it's only around 3% of the population, if I remember correctly.

The type is ENTP, and it's called "The Debater". People of this personality type love the process of debate, and live for the debate itself rather than necessarily championing a cause. Consequently, they even enjoy debating the other-side of an issue. And best yet, they can debate in a non-personal fashion. They love the fun of ripping apart arguments and belief systems, along with mental sparring. They enjoy understanding their opponents side of an issue, and can walk away unattached and non-judgmental, happy that they may have uncovered some truth or understanding. And they love accumulating knowledge.

I'm not necessarily saying you're one of these, but you might google the type description or even take the test free online.

Just don't ask me how I know so much about this personality type. :2razz:

it's been a while since i took the Meyers-Briggs, but i think i remember testing as an INTP.

Which interestingly is not too far-off from an ENTP. These two are called "sister types", due to their similarity.

I'm not sure if you know what you are asking for.
