I saw this while Obama was president and now with Trump. Both have been said to be a Messiah to their supporter/voters. I’ve never seen anyone actually say it themselves, though so let’s be clear either way. Attaching poll.

I' e never seen right-wingers call Obama a "messiah" for leftists. Every other post from liberals on this forum refers to Trump as a right-wing messiah. It's bizarre because there's a very vocal anti-Trump movement in the GOP so the claims of him being a messiah are not grounded in any sort of reality.

"Both did it, but I never actually saw it".

Wow. And you apparently don't even see the problem with that.

No.

Originally my answer was "no of course not" then after I looked up the actual definition I realized my mistake.

Definition of messiah
1 capitalized
a : the expected king and deliverer of the Jews
b : jesus 1
2 : a professed or accepted leader of some hope or cause
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/messiah

I thought that messiah was only a religious or spiritual savior of oppression and grantor of light or freedom. Seems that's not correct at all hahahaha. Seems that's the over dramatic definition of it based on rare usages in movies and religious quotes I guess.

Anyway my answer now, after actually knowing what the word can all mean is yes but it doesn't have much meaning.

I have never seen anyone claim Obama as 'their messiah.'

Can you please provide some sources for that? Sources that differ from any personal opinions or support of a Bush, Clinton, Reagan, or Trump?

I have to say that I did see it during the Obama administration. Frankly, the near complete role reversal is a little comical.

You must of not been paying attention then. I saw it in memes, on facebook, websites, biased news, heard it in conversation and seen it here many times here on this very board. It was VERY common, in fact IMO more common then I ever here it for Trump. Of course I used to laugh at it NO MATTER WHO SAID IT because of what I THOUGHT it meant (see post #6) but I was wrong. It can be a very justified word it just has a stereotypical connotation that generates different thoughts from its actually meaning.

I meant that some righties would refer to Obama as being a messiah when interacting with lefties.

I have no interest in religion.

Yeah, I always thought that was ridiculous characterization.

OMG. Not Rick Astley. Now that sickening baritone is trying to worm into my ear.

Must purge it, now!

So are you saying now that it's possible some president was your messiah?

I have heard the messiah insult being used less now that Trump is president. I am also in a red state though so who knows. It was definitely an everyday occurrence to hear someone claim Democrats treat Obama like the messiah. I voted no because everyone is flawed.

So are you saying now that it's being used "against" Trump supporters, you're cool with it?

What? How in the world did you come to the conclusion reading my post? That's a monumentally stupid assumption. Hahahaha Anyway no that's not what I said in anyway. It would be circumstantial on how they meant it. If a person is "using it" as a dig I still laugh at them no matter who does it because it doesn't really make sense. If a someone would say they personally feel that way, then that's fine by me cause its accurate unless of course they meant it in the religious and spiritual way. If a person just used it normally without the dramatic overtones (not as a dig) it would just be part of the conversation.

I thought we were well past thinking of anyone as a Messiah. But I do think of President Trump as the Grand Poobah.

Sorry, I did make a mistake and edited my question which you've actually answered here so thanks for that.

It was my way of rick rolling anyone who didn't choose one of the top three choices.

My initial reaction and reply was, "What a dumbass question." Then I thought about it for more than a second. **** me, do we have a lot of stupid people in this country or what? I can see people buying into that bull**** on all sides.

I think that line is mainly used derogatorily by opponents.

Hey, he might be better than the worst at presidenting.

When you quote someone, you're supposed to actually use the words they said/wrote.

Paraphrasing in order to clarify one's words is permissible. My mistake was to not point out that it was paraphrasing - I could have done so by saying, "In so many words, you just said...". But I failed to do so. Thanks for pointing it out.
