Have you ever viewed a U.S. president as being your/the Messiah?

I saw this while Obama was president and now with Trump. Both have been said to be a Messiah to their supporter/voters. I’ve never seen anyone actually say it themselves, though so let’s be clear either way. Attaching poll.

No one will ever actually say it. It's how they react to what the president says or does that gives an indication that someone views the POTUS in such regard.

It was my way of rick rolling anyone who didn't choose one of the top three choices.

I fixed it.

That guy always annoyed the crap out of me. There's much worse music out there, but that stuff got enough airplay that I hated it.

Blasphemy! There is never enough air time for Rick Atsley!

I never put too much stock or emotion into who was/is president.

The loyalists and haters usually become real assholes when they invest their emotions in to the equation.

Martin van Buren was the Messiah, and he shall rise again at the end times!

Not yet. Elon 2020

Can't decide between 2nd and 4th choice.

He's not the Messiah he's a very naughty boy!

This is really odd, but every so often when I see/hear someone call a leader the "Messiah", I am somehow reminded of a movie I saw on cable over a decade ago - I only saw part of it, and don't know the name, but it somehow involved the antichrist becoming president and taking over, or some such ****ery.

I' e never seen right-wingers call Obama a "messiah" for leftists. Every other post from liberals on this forum refers to Trump as a right-wing messiah. It's bizarre because there's a very vocal anti-Trump movement in the GOP so the claims of him being a messiah are not grounded in any sort of reality.

rofl, you must have been asleep for 8 years then.

That's just funny. I'm a fan of politics I like watching it and listening to the ridiculous things people say about it but Messiah anointed one Christ no. Lol how silly.

Originally my answer was "no of course not" then after I looked up the actual definition I realized my mistake.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/messiah

I thought that messiah was only a religious or spiritual savior of oppression and grantor of light or freedom. Seems that's not correct at all hahahaha. Seems that's the over dramatic definition of it based on rare usages in movies and religious quotes I guess.

Anyway my answer now, after actually knowing what the word can all mean is yes but it doesn't have much meaning.

Messiah is the Hebrew word for anointed one it is a synonym with the word Christ which is Greek.

Now what anointed one means... that could be the guy I'm with a handicap placard being able to park right up front in the mall on Christmas Eve in the rain.

Funny :) Yeah like I said, now that I know more it's pretty meaningless. As long as a person uses it within reason it's fine.

I was pretty young when JFK was assassinated. However, looking back on what he accomplished and what more he could have accomplished had he lived, by the end of his tenure as president he might very well have been close to "messiah-like" in my eyes.

Anyone new want to weigh in?

I have to say that I did see it during the Obama administration. Frankly, the near complete role reversal is a little comical.

I remember quite distinctly right wingers claiming that the left saw Obama as the Messiah. Over and over and over and over again.

Yup, I saw that too.

New, here.

Nope. All politicians are dirtbags to one degree or another. You just gotta figure out which dirtbag in any election will do the least damage.

The closest I have seen in other folks was Reagan.

No.

Cheers.

It sure seemed that way.
Did you watch TV or read newspapers leading up to the 2008 election? The guy was treated like a saviour. Obama would solve climate change. Obama would mean peace in the middle east. Hope and change. Peace and harmony. Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for all he had done. Utter garbage devoid of any substance being repeated over and over again, like the classical personality cults of the darkest parts of the 20th century. It was just too much. The "Obamassiah" memes were a reaction to the ridiculous display, and even if most Democrat voters didn't buy into it, there were enough who repeated the mindless drivel that the memes were an instant success. They sure resonated with me, and I don't even live in the US (European media would repeat a lot of the nonsense).

@thread
I see no concerted attempt by any establishment to elevate Trump so. If he has a personality cult, it's more of a self made thing; his cult being more like that of Elvis than Stalin. But he may indeed have one.

Obama was the magic negro.

Trump is the hero to those who called Obama a negro.

Messiah is just a simplification of each.
