I really ****ing hate it when people just go around generalizing black people, as if all they do is murder, steal, and use welfare. It's ****ing retarded.

Yea it gets old fast. The guy arguing because it's "his reality" somehow makes it right is just laughable.

And it may be his reality. But that doesn't mean generalizing most/all black people makes any sense.

Tried to tell him that as you saw. He is obviously not having it.

Hmmmm...Cairo (as another poster mentioned). Also Fez, Marrakesh, Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madras...

I mean, c'mon. The notion that black people haven't built any major enduring cities is both false and ridiculous.

Hate to be that guy but...

- Cairo : Founded in 969
- Fez : Founded in 789
- Marrakesh : Founded in 1062
- Addis-Abeba : Founded in 1886
- Bangalore : Founded in 1537
- Hyderabad : Founded in 1591
- Madras : Founded in 1639

The only city that is older than 3'000 years (in Africa) is Luxor (Thebes) : continuously inhabited since 3200 BC.

This, of course, doesn't mean anything whatsoever regarding the specific attributes of ones race / origin / skin color. Who gives a **** if Europe has far more old cities than Africa. People born and raised today are not impacted by the fact that their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather lived in a city and not in a tent.

Do blacks care for their own community like other groups? If you look at the Americans donor class, they come from the majority of whites - Money, Food, Blood, Organs etc...

It just seems with the black community, it lacks a sense of community compared to other groups - Jews, Asians, Christians. It seems those groups have a much more well-organized infrastructure that looks out for their own.

I am not trying to start a controversial conversation, but when you look at some the top donors of minority causes, they are coming from older white males.

The top wealthy Jews in our country donate a lot of their wealth to Jewish-related causes. Shouldn't the Obama's for example, be donating the majority of their allocated money towards donations to black-related causes? Surprisingly, the majority of their donations are not going to black-causes. I would bet a lot of upper-class blacks are the same way.

These are some questions I ask myself and wonder why blacks in this country are not seeing as much progress as they should be making.

Depends on your definition of the word "care".

Wealth typically only lasts 3 generations, the idea that most wealth is built over generations is simply false. Yes, there are several families that have been able to achieve wealth growing over several generations however those are the minority. Just look at many of the richest people around today, most are self made.

You'll need to link me on that. There's plenty of outliers, but even those likely started with better than average starting conditions.

Why do you assume there is one homogenized black community, not many distinct black communities, including communities which are inclusive of other ethnicities?

When did donors become a class?

Are caricatures and essential for your definitions of life?

I, too, hate to be this guy, but:

Here was the original claim (in the title of the YouTube video):

Africans have never built a major enduring city in 3,000 years.

By the normal rules of English construction, this claim means that, during the last 3,000 years (i.e. since roughly 982 B.C.E.), black people haven't built any major enduring cities. It does not mean that black people haven't built cities that have endured for more than 3,000 years. That is, the time period in question is not before 3,000 years ago, but within the last 3,000 years.

To show the claim false, we need to find cities that meet all of the following criteria:

1. Built in the last 3000 years
2. By black people
3. Counts as a "major" city (which is up to judgment)
4. And has "endured" (where, presumably, again it's up to judgment and comparison with other old cities as to what counts for endurance).

The ones I listed do meet those criteria. I suppose someone could take issue with the ones in India, but both of those were founded by the dark-skinned Southern Indians of Dravidian descent, and their skin is as dark as that of anyone from Africa.

Anyway, of course I agree about your further observation that the claim wouldn't mean much, even if true.

Indeed, you make valid points. Therefore, we have to define what "enduring" and "major" means... it's all up for discussion.
Making the initial claim, indeed, even more pointless.

Africans Have Never Built a Major Enduring City in 3,000 Years - YouTube

Here is what a black man has to say about what blacks have built.

It answers the question nicely..

Actually, there is substantial evidence of large ancient cites being built in Africa. The problem is that in an area where termites are endemic, the cities were built of wood, so they were essentially giant buffets. I remember reading an article several years ago that posited that a part of the reason why there are so many termites in Africa may have a lot to do with them being fed whole cities and having a massive population boom as a result and spreading far past their normal domain. The article also theorized that a large portion of the savanna may exist because of deforestation to build those cites.

Ancient kingdoms of:

Kongo
Mali
Great Zimbabwe

to name just three of the ones everyone should already know about.

The Congo was so formidable, the Europeans had to spit it up as fast as possible to keep it in check. Everyone has heard of Timbuktu (hopefully), one of the greatest trade centers of the ancient world. And Zimbabwe is purported to be the birthplace of stone masonry, although this is still in dispute.

I hadn't heard of the termite theory. Thanks for the info. I'll dig into it a bit.

Your wasting your breath here. You should tell this to the black man in the You Tube I posted. It would seem he disagrees with you totally....

I wonder why that is anyway...

Maybe because your talking about China? LOL

Yeah, since when should I take the words of archaeologists over that of some random guy on YouTube? Since when is science and academic skill ever been right when compared to the words of a guy talking into a camera?

THAT, sir, is why conservatives elected a guy who knows beans-to-BS about government to run the biggest government in human history. "He tells us the scientists and academics are wrong - and he's a rich guy talking into a camera so he must be right!"

We aren't in a 3rd world country, and I think many wouldn't appreciate you looking down on the black community and making that comparison.

Anyone that would give up on themselves because no one gives a damn about them might need to see help because outside of family and close friends no one gives a damn about you (any race).

Pretty much agree with your last paragraph though.

Also, I do find it pretty ironic that someone who leans "Progressive" would use that Solzhenitsyn quote.

As for the OP, many wealthy black people do quite a bit of work and fund raising for the black community and likely more than white people do for other whites on average.

There are parts of America that are less well-developed than many third-world countries. I know this first-hand, for the MS Delta is certainly less well-developed than some regions in the Philippines.

Concerning the Solzhenitsyn quote, it's meant to provide context to the quote that immediately follows it. Look again:

Most people would rather climb out of their pit of ignorance, not dig deeper into it.

70% of Rich Families Lose Their Wealth by the Second Generation | Money

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2014/07/16/how-to-stay-rich-for-three-generations-.html

It has been like this forever, there is even an ancient Chinese proverb that says wealth never lasts 3 generations "Fu bu*guo san dai"

Interesting, thanks. I suppose it's all in how you measure it, and wealth means different this to different people. In your first link, for example, the main interviewee is a financial planner in Walnut Creek, CA, crying about his grandpa's estate. Sad, but Walnut Creek is a wealthy community, and I'd guess this fellow would be considered quite well off by the standards of most in the country. Maybe not multi-millionaire rich, but solidly upper middle.

I'd wager his background played into this. I doubt that any given person, whose grandpa wasn't extremely wealthy, had the same shot at that high paying gig in that wealthy part of the nation. If nothing else, he presumably benefits from the educational opportunities and perspective that lifestyle presented him.

Who do you think you are talking too?

I escaped political violence in Kosovo. I have seen family members and friends die.

Spare me your self-righteousness.

Then you failed to learn an important lesson about humanity, that while our cultures and religions may be wildly different, at the level of the family, we're all very much alike...including how we respond to living in poverty. It would probably help if you gained a measure of perspective, to remember that your personal experience - as terrible as it certainly was - does not for one moment detract from the struggles that others face.

Of course the worst areas around the country will be less developed than certain regions of poor countries but poor people live significantly better in America than the poor in the vast majority of other countries. Our poor would be considered upper middle class in most 3rd world countries.

I understand what you were doing with the quote, and is correctly applied. It doesn't make it any less humorous to see a progressive use it to those that have read the Gulag Archipelago.

Also, hello fellow mississippian.

What on earth does reading the Gulag Archipelago have to do with being Progressive? Are you seriously under the impression that Progressives are Stalinists---never mind. I think I know the answer to that.

Interesting poll...couldn't vote entirely yes or no....the majority do care but a minority in the inter cities don't....Detroit for example.

So, are you saying that English is your second language? That might explain a lot.
