Did George W Bush nearly eradicate AIDS

I was encouraged by another poster to post this thread.

The poster insists that GWB nearly eradicated AIDS.

The definition of eradication by the CDC is

Eradication: Permanent reduction to zero of the worldwide incidence of infection caused by a specific agent as a result of deliberate efforts; intervention measures are no longer needed
Now his use of "nearly" is subjective...but I think we can come to some agreement anyway.

So did GWB nearly eradicate AIDS?

That is the realm of scientists, not presidents.

By the time Bush was President the number of Aids cases was already so large and the infestation globally so well established that it seems totally impossible that anyone could have made more than a local dent in the epidemic. We possibly had a window of opportunity at the very beginning but let it close.

I get what Bucky was saying. He meant through legislation or authorazation of funds that the epidemic was "eradicated". GWB did help the global war on AIDs....but eradication - no where near,

Bush pushed for AIDs programs in Africa; prevention, treatment and the avoidance of varieties of HIV spreading. These programs were very successful, especially in east Africa.

Eradication is an excessive term, but we should recognize the success of AIDs programs in Africa pushed by Bush.

Eradication is beyond excessive....the terminology is downright irresponsible ...it would make folks stop thinking about condoms and such.

In terms of GWB ...I applaud his efforts!

He pushed for these programs when doing so was not popular with African leaders, regimes and even nations. This was a time when going to a clinic for testing in Africa meant one was gay (if male) or a prostitute (if female). These programs were not simply building clinics, they were public opinion campaigns based on education and understanding intent to wipe away social stigma and bring the discussion of HIV to the forefront. Physical infrastructure was a minor hurdle in the process.

No, not even close (especially given that not being a scientist, he couldn't eradicate anything - except for human civilization if he decided to launch). But Bush 43 DOES get credit for making great progress in getting the spread of HIV/AIDS under control not only here in America, but especially in Africa. He deserves great credit for that.
