Should standing for the anthem be law?

Is Trump right, should standing be compulsory?

Correct. They made America the richest country in the history of the world so not only does it work that makes it acceptable.

Fascist ideals are only acceptable in the eyes of some past time Germans and some present day Americans. Do you favor a Heil with your left or right arm?

I am not a US Marshall... but I will see about Amending the Constitution so ne can drop you off on tbe other side of the wall with no passport or citizenship.

:waiting:

After learning the third verse I am surprised any black person stands for it.

Yep. But I doubt more than 5% of Americans are familiar with that verse. I only learned about it a few months ago on this very board.

In a speech yesterday, Trump said “we believe that every American should have to stand for the national anthem”.

Do you agree with Trump that Americans should have to stand, and would you support a law that required it?

Should that be something the federal government requires of you? No. However if your employer wishes you to do that while on the clock on company property then its up to the employer if they want to make their employees do that.

Do not besmirch my Italian forebears or I might have to resort to comments about New Zealand men and sheep.

Italians mudered Caesar...

US Flag code - it's actually codified in the USC not as law but as customs that should be followed only speaks about men, not in uniform, and hats. They should be removed and held against the left shoulder with your hand over your heart. A couple of ettiquette sites I looked at said that women wearing unisex caps - baseball caps mostly - should follow the same rules as men, that includes removing it for the anthem.

Why do we treat women differently? Dunno. Tradition I guess. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but it probably made sense to people at some point in the past.

Because men don't need to spend a half hour getting their hair back in place after having removed a hat.

I did wonder why the national anthem must be played at football games. I understand the Olympics, but why the connection to sporting events? Anyway, I found the following an interesting explanation:

Why the Star-Spangled Banner is Played At Sporting Events - History in the Headlines

Also last paragraph:
The anthem’s adoption also gave way to a new American pastime, almost as beloved as sports itself: complaining about people’s behavior during the national anthem. By 1954, Baltimore Orioles general manager Arthur Ehlers was already bemoaning fans he thought disrespected the anthem by talking and laughing during the song. Ehlers briefly stopped playing the anthem altogether, before relenting to pressure and reinstating it a month later.

I think our president is mildly retarded or has some sort of brain damage. What a stupid f'ing idea.

No! You cannot force people to do something they may disagree with or protest against... The NFL on the other hand is a private company that sets its own working rules.

Trump said Americans should have to stand, not should stand. So you think Trump is wrong when he says standing should be compulsory?

Yes, as a Trump voter even though we are targeted with stupid ridiculous claims we agree with everything Trump says like automatons. Trump is wrong, he's wrong on many things, most of which are just silly twiiter comments and not legislation ideas.

He's also right on many things!

The funny part is that I doubt even half of those complaining about the football players not standing actually stopped their cars to get out and stand up when their favorite radio station played/plays the national anthem on their drive to or from work, a common event I have heard many, many times since 9/11 occur (and actually my uncle complained about right away how disrespectful it was but that many people would not do or even think to do even if they weren't in a car/driving). How many of those people actually do stand up when the national anthem is played on the radio, whether driving or not? How many complained or threatened to boycott radio stations for playing the national anthem when people might be driving (in many cases during the highest driving times of the day) to demonstrate their patriotism? Or when TVs used to sign on and off to the national anthem? Was there this level of "patriotism" then?

Flag code should not be taken nearly as seriously as some like to take it. It is respectful to follow it, but there are a lot of things that people do that are not respectful, but ignored all the time.

I rarely ever vote in these slanted polls, but Trump is stupid.

No.

- As much as some wannabes want, we are not Nazi Germany. Heil America!

- Patriotism is a personal matter.

- Just because you stand, doesn't mean you respect.

- Nobody should ever argue the Constitution in a way that it only protects them. The morons and their betters have the same rights.

A silver-spooned civilian like Trump, a moron who celebrated his rights by denigrating Vietnam Veterans and every American POW in every single war to the laughter of the mob, does not get to wrap his ass in an American flag diaper and pretend that he is patriotic and respectful. He's a douche and is merely exploiting the irrational Conservative mood of his fan base. You think he actually cares about standing at football games? "Lock her up," "build a wall," "drain the swamp," ..."respect he flag"... wake up already.

As much as I want everyone to stand for the flag and the anthem I have to ask myself what the founders would have said if they were "forced" to do the same for the English flag.
