Mental illness is best defined by those who know the science/events of September 11, 2001 and still believe in the totally impossible US government official conspiracy theory of that same day, September 11, 2001.

Political correctness

So you believe that rape is okay, pedophilia is okay, women being only barefoot and pregnant is just hunky dory, ... .

Do you know what a Neanderthal is?

Yes....it's a Hillary supporter.

You were asked,

"So you believe that rape is okay, pedophilia is okay, women being only barefoot and pregnant is just hunky dory, ... .

Do you know what a Neanderthal is?"

and rather than address it honestly, you bob and weave.

You forgot Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Compulsive Lying Disorder.

That is something that is drilled into students in the US education system, further pounded into their brains on US national, state and local media until it affects all but the most discerning of American brains.

Psychiatry, not psychology. Although, yes, both are kind of a joke. I am a gay man. 40 years ago homosexuality was in the DSM and considered a mental illness. Then they figured out that gay men can lead happy and functional lives and through a big political push, homosexuality was pulled from the DSM. There was never any real science to put it into the DSM in the first place and very little to take it out. Only this year did they finally identify two specific genes related to male homosexuality. What does that make it? A disease? A mental disorder? A lifestyle choice? A sexual orientation? Depends on who you ask. Point is, does it cause distress and dysfunction?

There are pedophiles who will never act on their desires and who will lead happy lives. I don't look down on those people. There are people who like sex with animals, and that seems weird and gross to me, but it isn't uncommon in some parts of the world. Can't say I agree with it, but I don't look down on those people. It seems kinda abusive to the animals though, which isn't cool.

I am diagnosed ADHD. It has been both a challenge and a gift.

agreed...

...and homosexuality on that list was more ridiculous than ADHD... something equally not an illness and something I was diagnosed with as a kid although I think I outgrew it long ago.

Oh really? Some adults shift from hyperactive indicators to inattentive indicators. Are you prone to losing things or zoning out? I actually find the science of ADHD to be interesting since they are finding some neurological markers. It is perhaps the most over diagnosed mental health condition though. Some parents will get their kids tested and tell their kids to act out so they can get the diagnosis and the parents can get a check. They usually sell their kid's medication on the streets. A bottle of Adderall fetches a good price in a college town.

I'll put some choices down that are topical to the last few years, I am curious to what this forum deems Mentally Ill if anything.:peace

I know you may want to multiple choice, but I suppose choose the one that really stands out to you. EDIT I found you can tick multiple choice!

I was diagnosed in the late 70's when it was the new rage. I am not sure I ever had it. I have a ton of energy but a ton of focus. Since I am older now I am not as active but still do more than most. I dont lose things but I am organized... almost OCD on some things. Pantry with overstocked shelve with labels all facing same way sorted by expiration date. But some things are messy...

There have not been Neanderthals around for quite some time. I gave you what I consider the closest modern example. :lamo

I was diagnosed ADHD, I was to be given Riddlin. Thank God I didn't as I would be dying of Liver failure today. I find it funny how people whom use ADD / ADHD whatever as excuses never seem to have an issue doing something they like?

Bobby says he hates Math class he has ADD, Bobby goes home and plays 7 hours of Call of Duty non stop! ADD / ADHD is bull****!

When I was a kid ADD was called Social Studies sucks

My DH was given Ritalin...it triggered bipolar in him at the age of 38...nasty stuff for anyone to take, especially adults...

God Bless! I today am hyperactive still, people say I walk through the office like a bull in a china shop.... But I don't see myself suffering from anything, I can concentrate no problem on things i like. I think to often people look to medical field for answers on just being human!

My son had problems in class from kindergarten until the first quarter of 5th grade. In testing, he just didn't test "bad enough" for anyone to suggest he needed meds, so his teachers and I just did whatever we could do to help manage the situation. With the exception of the kindergarten teacher, the others were awesome in trying to help. Finally, the 5th grade teacher suggested trying meds. It wasn't because she was new to teaching him, she had had him in the previous year as well, but she thought it was worth trying and if it didn't work, no harm no foul. It was my decision and I made it. So the doctor agreed and put him on a low dose of Ritalin. My son's improvement was amazing and measurable. He ended up on an extended dose pill until he was a junior in high school when he said it made him speedy and sick. It saved him his education. He grew out of it and has no problems as an adult.

I wholly agree, there are those out there who jump on the meds bandwagon rather than work with kids. That was thankfully not my son's experience and I was staunchly against it until we were running out of options. There has been no mention of liver dysfunction in his physicals, thank goodness!

Just being silly... it is serious, obviously... what happened to your DH. Over diagnosing ADD/ADHD is a proble. As a teacher I find many that supposedly have it chill if you have them run a couple of laps. Kids know I do this and thank me...

just lack of coordination, perhaps.

DH was diagnosed as an adult...the dumb doc gave him Ritalin anyway...I have since read that it should not be given to adults because of some serious side effects...bringing on psychotic bipolar being one...after years of struggling with an appropriate cocktail of meds, DH is finally stable...has been for about 4 years now but he has been unable to work pretty much since his diagnosis...has been on SS Disability for about the last 17 years or so...he is now 60 years old and I think, has finally come to terms with his illness...before that, life was a roller coaster ride...

Amazing that screwing a dog is OK in 43.75% of those that responded minds!
