I am certain that every one of us have thought--how could this country screw up this badly. Are there people that are really this stupid in this country? Nominating someone that never won a single debate during the primary or with Hillary Clinton. Whom continually exhibited his lack of experience, his lack of knowledge, lack of everything, including respect & dignity that represents the office of the Presidency.

So how were millions of people convinced that he was the right one out of 17 GOP candidates? A few of them much more qualified and competent to become POTUS. If anyone ever tells you that Trump won a single debate, or walked away believing he was competent enough to be POTUS--they're lying through their teeth.

This pretty much summed up Trump's debate skills.

I think it started 2 decades ago, by a large segment of our society whom have insisted in living in a right wing media bubble. FOX NEWS, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and others who take information, regurgitate it and then spoon feed it back to their audiences in 3 or more daily hours of right wing hyperbole, half truths, a ton of misinformation and enough conspiracy theories to fill the capital building from floor to ceiling. The news they want to hear.

As Conor Friedersdorf wrote last year in the Atlantic: “the elements of the party that sent pro-Trump signals to primary voters, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin, Rudi Guiliani, Jeff Sessions, Rick Scott, Jan Brewer, Joe Arapaio, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Breitbart.com, The Drudge Report, The New York Post, are simply more powerful, relative to National Review, Mitt Romney, John McCain, and other ‘Trump is unacceptable’ forces, than previously thought.”

Of course some of them are now running like a bunch of rats leaving a sinking ship.

FOX NEWS who gave Trump an unprecendented amount of news coverage during the primaries while ignoring all other GOP candidates, whom are also running for cover, decided to report 3 criminal indictments and 1 guilty plea in this manner.

Of course the Trump supporter whom have their own issues. The Dunning-Kruger effect is very interesting in the below article.

I think your explanation is a bit reductionist. Are you blaming right-wing media? Or the viewers? Or both? And if so, maybe we should try to understand what factors draw those viewers to those outlets in the first place.

if the idiots at Fox Noise had stopped asking him for his opinion politically, he might not have ever given himself enough credit to think he was smart enough, and politically savvy enough, to run for office.

Your post is one reason that he won. One among many. In your first two paragraphs you manage to assert why you think Trump shouldn't have won and turn around and call those that supported Trump liars, essentially dismissing them. As if their opinions do not matter. You want to know "who's to blame for this disaster"? Start by looking in the mirror and some self reflection.

Edit PS: Funny how none of your poll options list anything other than "right wing".

Who's to blame for this disaster?

Trump is sitting in the Oval office right now because the democrats nominated a bigger piece of **** than the republicans did. This was despite the fact the mainstream media was in the bag for Clinton and was doing any and everything they can to demonize Trump.

Trump won the primary due to a combination of Republicans having 17 primary candidates and democrats rat-****ing IE party raiding the primary(we know this part is true due to all the Trump-tards posting stories on this forum of democrats crossing over to vote for Trump as somehow a good thing).

This poll is loaded with completely biased questions put forth to further an agenda.
My answers as to why Trump got elected.

1. Put immigration front and center when all others chose to sweep it under the rug.
2. Democrats thinking he was a joke and not taking him seriously. An old mistake repeated by the defeated time and time again.
3. Hillary saying out of her own mouth those that support him are nothing but " a basket of deplorables ".
4. A famous Hillary supporter saying " There is a special place in hell for women who will not vote for her ".
5. The DNC being caught red-handed rigging their own nomination process for Hillary.
6. The unending verbal and physical attacks upon those who say they voted for Trump. Which are still going on to this day.
7. Eight years of seeing how the Democrats govern and what they think of our country.
8. Kate Steinle's murder that showed the whole country Democrats prefer to protect illegal alien repeat felons than their own citizens.

You know your bottom picture is faked, right?

Fabulously incorrect. How does not voting for someone elect them?

If their views and actions after 8 years wasn't enough to put them over the top, then the democrats need to take a wider view of what mainstream American is looking for.

Trump flipped how many blue states? How does that happen?

Any decent democrat contender (without baggage) should have thoroughly trounced Trump.

The democrats lost the presidency.

Obama stoked the anger and Clinton arrogantly ignored the arithmetic of elections. Had Obama built bridges instead of mouthing the Song of Victims or had the Lady used the calculator in her phone, Trump would now be a much less troubled man.

Democrats are the reason Trump is in the Oval Office.

That is quite true. We talked about it during the campaign here in the forum. Oddly enough, Democrats are even now incapable of understanding, what brought this about and squawk and whine about the stupidity of deplorable in one vocabulary or the other.

The Hillary campaign overlooked the simple fact that most Americans have a moderate lean regardless of their party.

It doesn't take a whole lot to flip a few voters here and there, and that why Trump broke through the blue wall.

Most folks here on DP forget (intentionally or not) to realize that most Americans do not consider politics as a hobby, spending hours on end trying to shred the oppositions point of view.

The OP is half right. All of the things that the OP states about the impact of right wing media is correct. This is the direct connection between the dislike of Obama, nothing else. It's also true that Trump failed in all of the debates and is a failure as a communicator. Vice President Pence said that in so many words during his debate. But there is a second half of the issue. The American people, in general, feel very disconnected and ignored by those they elect. Elected officials claim that they are supporting things that help their constituents, but that's an extremely watered down version of what they really do. What they REALLY do is say whatever it takes and support what ever they should in order to stay in power. That is their first priority. Everything else is secondary. The American people see that... that's why Trump and Sanders were so popular during the past election cycle. Not because either of them, especially Trump was overly qualified, but because both of them stuck their middle finger up at the standard folks in power. The problem with this entire endeavor, though, was that it was so new and would be such political suicide for someone if they lost, that no one competent on the GOP side would take a chance at doing this. Therefore, we got Trump, an outsider, which is what a lot of Americans wanted, but the most incompetent outsider we could get. Practically anyone would have been better.

Now, Trump's election could be a good thing. It could open the door for other outsiders, far more capable than he, to run and win, forcing those who are not outsiders to think less about keeping their jobs... which could be ending, and more about actually doing their jobs. Of course, it could also be a bad thing. When an outsider got elected, it turned out to be Trump, the worst possible choice. It might dissuade the American people from voting for another outsider in the future.

Time will tell.

One thing I would disagree with is whether or not Trump won the debates. That is purely a subjective determination.

I agree to some extent. If you based your evaluation on emotion, Trump won. If you based it on cognitively discussing the issues, Hillary won.

The blame lies with the USA having an antiquated system which permits the election of a President who is NOT the choice of the American people.

If we elected the President the exact same way we elect every other office in the land, this question would be completely unnecessary as Clinton would be in the White House having won by more than 2.8 million more votes that Trump got.

Oh for crapsake -- what a lame poll.

The answer is the runaway liberal policies of Obama's era, coupled with the fact the DNC insisted on running Hillary.

The election of Trump was an overwhelming rejection of the status quo, and that includes a very poor foreign policy, an apologetic America-last mindset, a ridiculous immigration policy, increasing racial tension, increasing disrespect for law enforcement, and the idea that it's okay to take from one person and give to another.

All of those things were ballooning under Obama, and the majority of the nation (geographically) did not want to see a continuation.

That's why Trump's in the Oval Office and that's why conservatives aren't going to take liberal policies lying down anymore. Liberals have a lot to learn.

Trump isn't an optimal President, but he's the only one who was willing to tell leftists (and their detrimental policies) to shove off.

For starters the blame game can be awarded to this dude who in the last eight years formed a regime that stifled growth in the American economy.
We could blame the liberal/Demos for their invites of raising the minimum wage which will kill job growth and promote unnecessary layoffs.
For this green house stuff.
For the BLM shannanigans(dedicated this to Paul[aka livelonger and mrmacq]). No need to go on but the bottom line are the voters.
Yes...I am happy to blame myself for Donald Trump becoming our two termed President.
(walks away)

Who's to blame for Donald Trump? I say look inward. Look at the Democrats and specifically Hillary Clinton. Clinton was basically chosen as the Democratic nominee back before the 2012 election in a secret meeting between Bill, Hillary and Obama. Be that as it may. The fact is the Republicans tried to hand the Oval Office on a silver platter to the Democrats by nominating Trump. A candidate in which only 36% of Americans looked favorably on. 60% viewed Trump unfavorably. The Democrats then threw that silver platter right back into the Republicans face by nominating Hillary Clinton. A nominee with a ton of baggage, under federal investigation and disliked by Americans as a whole as much as Trump was. Only 38% of all Americans had a favorable view of her to 58% unfavorable. This became a battle of which candidate one disliked the least or the most depending on how one looks at it. Which one you wanted to lose the most, not which one you wanted to win. Fact is 25% of all Americans really disliked both candidates and wanted neither as their next president.

How inept was Hillary’s campaign? She allowed Trump to out work and out campaign her. Between 1 Sep to 8 Nov 2016 Trump made 116 campaign visits/stops to Hillary’s 71 and some of that 71 was fund raisers in deep blue California and New York. Trump never took a day off the campaign trail, Clinton several. Name me another Democrat if nominated that would have let his opponent out work and out campaign them by that much. Another thing, Trump energized his supporters, they were willing to go to the four corners of the earth for him. Clinton who had many more supporters where more ho hum. They lacked enthusiasm for her. I suppose that both Clinton and her supporters thought they had the election in the bag.

Strategy, Clinton tried to run up the score by winning Georgia, Utah and Arizona. She wanted to get more electoral votes than Obama did. She failed to pay attention to her backyard. The blue wall states. Trump strategy was all in winning the electoral college, getting 270 electoral votes. Swing states like Wisconsin, Trump made 5 visits/stops to Clinton’s zero, none, nada. Michigan, Trump 6 visits, Clinton one. Pennsylvania was closer, 8 for Trump, 5 for Clinton. Name me another Democrat who would have ignored these states if nominated while concentrating on winning Georgia, Arizona and Utah. Even in electoral vote rich Florida, Clinton let Trump outwork her there too, 13 visits/stops for Trump, 8 for Clinton. Talk about running a lazy campaign.

How about the media, Trump was always calling in to all the morning shows. Getting his face before the crowd, it didn’t matter if the morning shows were for or against him. He called in and received tons of publicity. Some bad, some good, some indifferent. Clinton hid. She only went on shows that were solidly behind her like the view. How many days between press conferences did she go? Over 200 according to a lot of posters on this site who was keeping track. How does one run a successful campaign while hiding from the media? You think another Democratic nominee would have done that?

Then you have the rigged Democratic primary process in Clinton Favor which caused a lot of Sanders supporters to stay home or vote third party. Only 3% of the democratic base voted third party, but 13% of Sanders supporters did, that is those who did go vote instead of staying home. They were angry at the Democratic Party and at Clinton for the jury-rigged process. I could go on with a bunch more examples, but this is getting way too long.

Why do we have Trump? The Democrats need to just look in the mirror and especially at Hillary Clinton and her inept campaign. Last years election should have been a Democratic route of Trump. But it wasn’t. The Democrats and Hillary Clinton lost it, Trump didn’t win it. I personally think any other Democratic nominee against Trump would have won by 10-15 points easily. The Democrats forgot the most important thing when it comes to elections. CANDIDATES MATTER!
