I'll just quote the whole article since it may require a subscription to read.....

"ONE YEAR after the election of Donald Trump, does the world respect America more, or less? A recent survey by the Pew Research Centre, a think-tank, finds that Americans’ responses to this seemingly empirical question differ greatly across party lines."

Pew finds that just 42% of Republicans believe that America is now respected less than in previous years. Last year, 70% of them held this belief. The opposite trend can be observed for Democrats, who are more likely to believe that America has lost credibility in the world’s eyes.

The rest of the world seems to agree with Democrats. Another Pew survey, published in June, showed that the prevalence of favorable views of America has fallen in 30 out of 37 countries since Barack Obama left office. The only country in which views of America have improved markedly is Russia, where 41% now see it favourably, up from 15%. Pew’s data show that non-Americans have also become much less confident in the American president “to do the right thing when it comes to international affairs”.

"It is possible that Republicans are simply out of touch with how the rest of the world sees America. Another possibility, however, is that Republicans want their country to be feared, rather than loved. They may believe that what is best for other countries is not necessarily best for America. After all, Mr Trump promised to make America, not the rest of the world, great again."

When Ronald Reagan ran for president he talked about America as a shining city on the hill. The idea was that if you make America into this amazing place full of success and good things, that other countries around the world would look up to us, and want to emulate us. He believed that the best way to spread capitalism and democracy around the world was to make a capitalistic democratic society enviable so that others would want to duplicate what we had.

Donald Trump is one of the most hated, least popular, and least respected leaders in the entire world. He was elected in a capitalist democracy. If everyone in the world hates this guy why would they ever want to duplicate they type of system that allowed him into power? Where Stalin and Lenon were once the textbook examples of why communism, socialism, and dictatorships were evil now Trump is the textbook example of what every country on earth is trying to avoid.

The rest of the world does not respect America. They may fear it, but only because we gave a reckless lunatic access to more nuclear weapons than any nation on early. When Donald Trump was elected the entire world gave the biggest collective face palm in world history.

International politics has never been about respect.

It's about fear, influence and what you can get from another country.

Tried to add a poll, but apparently, there's a 5-minute time limit to create it. I guess just put down your political leanings whether you're an American or not, and how much more or less you respect America today as a result of Trump's presidency compared to Obama's.

International politics has never been about respect.

It's about fear

When you fear something, all you want to do is try and kill it so you don't have to fear it anymore. If needs be you might even be willing to gang up with someone you don't particularly like and combine your efforts to do so.

The best countries to live in - Business Insider

On a list of the best countries to live in America ranks 11th. Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Denmark all beat us. Does anybody fear the countries that beat us?

If there are any countries in the world that people fear more than America, it's probably Russia, North Korea, China, Afghanistan, or Iran. Did any of those countries make the list?

Is it possible you're just a coward? A scared animal that thinks it needs to growl or bark at anything that moves in order to try and make it as scared of you as you are of it?

We are the greatest super power on planet earth. We will always be respected. Now, are we more or less LIKED today? I’d say probably less. But honestly? We don’t have to be liked. That shouldn’t be a foreign policy goal.

We are the greatest super power on planet earth. We will always be respected.
Ummm..... No......Power does not equal respect. Not even close. For example, Trump is very wealthy and powerful. I have absolutely no respect for him whatsoever. Anybody who voted for him has totally lost any amount of respect I might have ever had for them. I don't fear them, I don't respect his voters. If anything I pitty them for their cowardice.

Now, are we more or less LIKED today? I’d say probably less. But honestly? We don’t have to be liked. That shouldn’t be a foreign policy goal.

So you don't think that having everyone hate hour guts makes it a little bit more difficult for us to convince people to do what we want? If you hate your boss you might do what he asks you to do short term because you have little choice, but you will always be looking for a way out to a better company, and you will only do what is absolutely necessary to get buy without getting yelled at.

Here in America office environments around the country are changing quite radically because businesses are starting to wake up to the reality that happy employees who like their jobs are far more productive, and easier to retain. Leadership on an international scale is no different. It's time for conservatives to wake up to the reality that using fear to control other countries leads to terrorism, and constant struggles with new enemies who refuse to cooperate. If you want to be a leader in the world just like a leader in the business world you need to build bridges and insure that those who you wish to lead feel like valued members of the team who's voices will be heard. Even if you ultimately have the final say, your decisions need to be based on sound reasoning, and not just "**** you I'm America, I'm the boss, do what I say."

I think that you are probably reducing the issue to one dimension, while it is more complicated. Trump has unnecessarily exacerbated the situation. That is undoubtedly true. But the situation was already visibly going in this direction in Clinton's second term.

First, I want to differentiate between respecting Americans and respecting America. I think, given the well publicized results of the popular vote, as well as the demonstrations and rhetoric after the vote, it is possible for "the rest of us" to see that it's #NotAllAmericans, and are still willing to give the benefit of the doubt on a one on one basis. The fact that less people approve of Trump now than voted for him during the election also reflects well on the American citizenry. The hard right want to paint you all as cry babies and traitors for not getting behind Trump, but they should be thanking you for driving the understanding that not all Americans are assholes.

As far as respecting America...I would suggest that has definitely gone downhill. The only way America really drives "respect" at the moment is by having the scariest guns, and I would argue that's not respect, that's self preservation. But it's only a matter of time before other nations catch up, and then America won't be as "special".

And that kind of goes for the American economy as well. Used to be that getting into the American market was the most desirable place to be. But as other strong markets emerge, which are far more attractive because they come to the table without thinking everyone else owes them something, the American market becomes less and less important, especially since so many of these emerging markets are much closer to one another, and do not require shipping over sea. And let's face it, economy, way more so than military might, defines a nation's worth.

So, when you add an egotistical megalomaniac to the equation, not only is it easy to lose respect for America, it's almost impossible not to, given how much less important America is becoming overall. There's just less and less to offset, and the rest of the world is moving on.

I wouldn't suggest this began with Trump...I think it's been going on for a while now. Trump is simply a fast forward button, an exclamation point at the end of a fairly long sentence. It's been a long time since anyone has been inspired by America. Sad, really.

I don't claim to know it all, but our military strength is the only thing keeping us from being laughed at and mocked. I predict the U.S. will canniabalize the defense budget and other parts of the budget to make room for a UBI.. and then universal healthcare and free education (I know it's not free, the gov pools $ and pays for it. No one individually is responsible for footing the bill. We collectively foot the bill). With butchering our already too expansive military budget, we will lose more and more respect.

So it's kind of both.

We are respected NOW due to 40% of our budget being dedicated to jets and so on.

We will not be respected in another 30 or 50 years due to many factors.

We're not more or less respected now than we were 10 or 20 years ago. I think some hate us (and for good reason), some love us.. not many, but SOME love us. It's not black and white it would seem.

INB4 we need a huge budget to keep us safe.

If we didn't go into the M.E. in the first place, we wouldn't have jihadis wanting to behead Westerners. But we just had to wage war for 15 years, fund rebel groups, stick our nose where it did not belong and steal their oil. So now, we do require lots of $$$ for the military but this could have easily been avoided but Bush, MERICA and those big bucks was just far too irresistible.

You write a good post. The only thing I would criticize is that I don't think the rest of the world fears USA. I think they mostly laugh and think it is sad.

Looks to me like the Asian trip went smoothly, and Trump seems to be popular in Japan and China. They went all out and the local press was good. Everyone backed him on his tough talk to North Korea. Overall, pretty good trip.

We survived the liberal panic about Reagan wanting to blow up the world.

We survived the juvenile delinquent years of Bill Clinton.

I expect that the world will still be in it's right form 3 years from now when the next president takes over.

I don't think the rest of the world fears USA. I think they mostly laugh and think it is sad.

Yeah, but the unfortunate reality is that we have more nuclear weapons than any country on earth, and if for any reason our economy was to tank it would likely take the rest of the worlds with it. So even though the rest of the world is laughing at how stupid we are they kind of have no choice, but to be worried about what this nut job might do.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! No, sorry. Asians are good at patronizing Americans and pretending they really like them, but I can assure you that the instant Trump is out of ear shot their saying, "Wow, what a ****ing idiot."

Is America more or less respected?
By who?

1. The politicians respect Trump far more than Obama. Both allies and enemies. They know he is not a hollow suit who will bend over. He will put America first. He will not draw Red Lines and surrender. He will not lead from behind. He is not afraid of offending terrorists by calling them Islamic Terrorists. He is not going to make idiotic deals. He will not give despots like Iran and Cuba assistance.

2. Like Reagan and Bush 43, the ignorant European masses will not respect him more. They’re clueless, and because they are clueless, deserve to be ignored.

They didn't go all out for Obama. I can imagine what they said about him when he was out of ear shot. Most Asians don't care for black people. I know the Japanese dislike them. I lived in Japan. Saw it first hand. I suspect they like Donald Trump much more than his predecessor.

No all the world knows of trump is that he will say whatever he pleases at the time and then change his statement the moment he feels like it. No one respects trump they just don't know how to take him.

Don't just blame trump, he did not invent stupidity by america he merely brought it to a higher level.

Don't get this wrong everyone likes americans, they are friendly and mostly courteous and great tippers espcially in countries where tipping is not done. Love the country itself magnificent vistas, great parks and mountains and good beaches. Exciting cities. Your country and people have alot to offer,

But when it comes to politcs or world trade you suck, bigly.

What a load of ****. This is what bullies say, not what intelligent people think.

It's for real, not BS. Respect is an idealistic narrative fed to the public to hide the ugly reality of what it takes to stay ahead on the world stage.

And yet his international diplomatic successes continue to mount, the economy is booming, he has forged good relationships with leaders around the world, ISIS is collapsing, NATO is strengthening, the UNSC is unanimously endorsing his initiatives, 50 ARAB nations have united under his leadership to fight Fundamentalist Islamic Terror and Russia hasn't annexed a single country since he took office.

What world are YOU living in?

And yet his international diplomatic successes continue to mount
Delusional.

, the economy is booming
Thanks to Obama. Trump has done nothing of consequence. The Economy is on the exact same identical trajectory it was on thanks to Obama. In fact it was after 7 months of Trump in office that the countries streak of 90 consecutive months with job growth ended.

, he has forged good relationships with leaders around the world
Everyone hates his guts except Putin and a couple other Tyrannical Dictators.

, ISIS is collapsing
ISIS already was collapsing.

, NATO is strengthening
NATO was already strong, and Trump threatned to leave it entirely.

the UNSC is unanimously endorsing his initiatives, 50 ARAB nations have united under his leadership to fight Fundamentalist Islamic Terror and
Already were doing that under Obama. Trump has changed nothing.

Russia hasn't annexed a single country since he took office.
Are you sure? Does America count? Because they seem to be running our country at this point.

What world are YOU living in?

Thanks to Obama. Trump has done nothing of consequence. The Economy is on the exact same identical trajectory it was on thanks to Obama. In fact it was after 7 months of Trump in office that the countries streak of 90 consecutive months with job growth ended.

Everyone hates his guts except Putin and a couple other Tyrannical Dictators.

NATO was already strong, and Trump threatned to leave it entirely.

Already were doing that under Obama. Trump has changed nothing.

Are you sure? Does America count? Because they seem to be running our country at this point.

The real one.

Wow!

You are living in an alternate reality.

You must be miserable when the real world interjects itself upon you.

Could you please link to the source that describes the meeting that occurred during the Obama's tenure in office of the meeting of the heads of 50 Arab, Islamic Majority Nations in which they voted unanimously to unify in actual efforts to limit Fundamentalist Islamic Terror?

You seem pretty sure that this happened, and I was just wondering when and where it did happen.

You know: In the REAL world.
