If you aren't aware of Civil War history, Google is your friend. I am not.

This could be considered part of a broader question... Is Confederate history American history? Or, during those Civil War years people in the CSA were on their own, so to speak.

Are POW camps in Vietnam part of American history?

The site is an iconic reminder of the horrors of Civil War prisons. It was commanded by Captain Henry Wirz, who was tried and executed after the war for war crimes. It was overcrowded to four times its capacity, with an inadequate water supply, inadequate food rations, and unsanitary conditions. Of the approximately 45,000 Union prisoners held at Camp Sumter during the war, nearly 13,000 died. The chief causes of death were scurvy, diarrhea, and dysentery.

Everything that has taken place on this continent is American History.

But more particularly, whatever has occurred since the founding of the first colony which would lead to the creation of the United States is uniquely American History.

That includes both the Good and the Bad; like Andersonville, Manzanar, compulsory sterilization (1930's - 1960's), MK Ultra, and the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment....to name just a few.

Same question for Camp Douglas? Or Elmira? Nobody in history is clean.

Since it (Andersonville) has been designated a National Historical Site and is the Location for the US POW Museum, I opine that it is American history. I have had the good fortune to visit and walk the grounds. In defense of site, it will be a while before developers threaten. It’s kinda in the middle of nowhere still. Is there a call to remove the memorial?
