Hmm...
Hard to find a universal answer, since
everyone lies periodically...and
anyone who claims they do not ever lie is either a saint, or a liar.
Now if one is narrowing down to defending a single lie, then it would depend on the type of lie.
We have white lies. I've done that from time to time, for example when I try to reassure someone who is very sick or injured in order to keep them fighting the illness or injury. I would certainly defend someone who lies like that.
We have kind lies. People lie to prevent disappointing someone or hurting them. For example, someone you like but don't love who clearly loves (or is infatuated) with you that you tell it is not them but you that can't handle it. I'd defend that type of lie too.
Then we have exaggeration lies. People who exaggerate their accomplishments or goals to make themselves seem more important. I could defend some of those as long as it was simply done out of a desire to feel better about themselves and not designed to cheat someone else.
We have lies designed to take advantage of someone. I'd be hard put to defend those kinds of lies.
We have lies designed to hurt others. People who are jealous and want to destroy someone else out of hate or spite. I could not defend those types either.
Finally we have pathological liars. I would tend to have them seek treatment...while avoiding them.
In any case, as I have just shown, there is no absolute either/or in the choices offered. So I choose neither. :coffeepap:
