Is soda causing a health epidemic?

Are sugary drinks like soda causing a health epidemic?

It's real simple: all things in moderation.

Moderation should be at the discretion of the individual, not gov't mandate.

Soda has been around for a long long time. I remember paying 15 cents for a glass bottle of Coke as a kid. I also grew up drinking sweet tea with real sugar in it more than I ever drank soda.

We also ran around outside most of the day when I was a kid. Could be that more than anything else.

That's the key. Kids are often sedentary compared to when I was a kid. It's no wonder their are so many obese kids. Even worse are the mamas who fill up baby bottles with soda pop.

Who do you think pays for it right now? When a person without insurance/no money gets life-saving surgery or treatment, who pays for it?

So everyone who has diabetes got it from soda, and nobody has insurance. Good ****ing grief. :doh

In other words, you have no evidence to support your fantastically idiotic assertions. What else is new?

The studies and science are clear: Soda is not good for your health:

In countries like Nicaragua, the cost of Coca-Cola is less expensive than Water. Dentist's have already shown and explained how bad these death drinks are rotting teeth.

IMO this is a health epidemic and companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are immoral. I don't mind adults making the decision to drink soda however the marketed demographics of these companies seem to be young children. The advertisements on TV and social media. The vending machines in our schools will have a great impact on children's health in the future. Soda is not a viable replacement for daily water intake yet these companies make it seem acceptable to drink 2-3 cans of soda a day....

Soda should be higher taxed. Vending machines should be banned in schools. Free refills shouldn't be allowed. By doing this maybe we won't be a country full of diabetics.

Soda isn't the problem, people not being able to control themselves is the issue.

Our sugar intake is not a lot above where it was in 1970:
How America's diet has changed over time | Pew Research Center

There is a possibility the corn sugar is bad for us, the geniuses are still trying to figure that out, but much more likely that eating too much and in particular eating too many carbs generally is more the problem than is sugar specifically.

You know that is where I am going.....the problem is not so much what we eat exactly, the problem is that we eat too much and dont move enough. I am well aware of the claims that we "exercise" three times as much as we did in the 1970's...like in a gym....but on average I think we use our bodies a lot less over the full day. Bodies and brains need to be used to stay in top form, there is no getting around that, but technology has allowed us to be sloths. .

No....people refusing to be responsible and accountable for their own actions are.

Watch the media and government; Soda, fats, energy drinks, coffee, eggs...( pick your favorite item of concern) all are responsible for XYZ....and are deserving of nanny state regulation.

Here's an idea for adults.....put down the soda, put down the fork or greasy burger, be a parent to your kids and tell them "no, you may not drink 2 liters of soda a day"....for those of you that need the government telling you how you need to live your life, what foods to eat, etc....you should probably hold off on having kids of your own until you can become an adult in the operative sense of the word; personal responsibility and accountability for your own actions and life choices.

Dont you want to know the truth here? Ya I know that the Bus Drivers to UTOPIA are selling ant-soda laws...... which I am against BTW...... but that is a separate issue except to point out that they are yet again found selling us "solutions" to "problems" that may or may not exist, all too often in the past the advertised problems they kept yapping about we find out later never were.

I want to see the proof, and because these so called experts have so often been wrong maybe they need to think about it for 5 or 10 years, you know make sure they get us the right answer this time, maybe even be able to prove it.

But dont you want to know if soda is bad for us?

Of course it is.....so is tobacco, transfats, too much cholesterol, a jabba the hut lifestyle sitting in front of the TV, and masturbating more than 20 times a day....but it still all comes down to being responsible for your own choices.

Fact.

I switched jobs a month ago, going from one where I sat in an office for 8 hours a day to one where I walk the shop floor or across an airport terminal almost half the day. I lost over 5 lbs. And, that's even after reducing my "exercise," three-hour bike rides, from four or five to one or two days a week. I also eat less because I no longer just sit on my ass all day.

They're a contributing factor to the obesity and diabetes problem, but I wouldn't say that they're causing it.

Part of the picture. However, if we outlawed all sodas, people would still be eating a bunch of junk food. There is also more and more evidence coming out that artificial sweeteners actually cause you to be hungry so even if they are not bad themselves, if they cause you to eat more then they kind of defeat their purpose.

Agreed. Too many just head for the gym four or five times a week and feel good about it, yet they drive most everywhere they go. What they should do, if they carry a smart phone is find a "walk logger" app and look at how much walking they are getting away from the gym.

That's excellent. I have lost 12 lbs with a combination of the walking I normally do on the job and power walking in our warehouse. And you are right in that you are likely to eat less. You have more of a sense of when you are full, then you do when sitting on your ass all day.

Today I grabbed a cart in a parking lot not 10 steps from the cart corral, and this is not the first time.....some people really are that unwilling to walk if they dont have to now.

I think this explains a lot.

True. I have seen people circling around parking lots multiple times or just stop and wait for someone in a close to the door to pull out.

It gets even worse now, yesterday a person was blocking traffic right in front of the store for over two minutes waiting for someone to load up and to pull out of a space in the first row. Yes I understand that this spot is one of the 5 closest to the door but I dont care, this is rude, because no one else can move. The days when people would keep moving looking for a spot were the good old days.

I just saw a report yesterday that Americans are fatter than ever.

Sloth has to have something to do with it.

Don't need to be forced. People simply need to make better choices.

Sure but are the advertised better choices actually better? I am currently eating baked Rufffles which have splashed over the front "65% less fat than reg chips" but when I look at the ingredients I see that cornstarch is #2. But see Corn Starch is something that tends to explode the blood sugar, which is made even worse here because they dont have a lot of fat to help dampen the sugar spike. People I imagine eat these thinking that they are healthy when in fact they might be less healthy over the long haul because sugar spikes wreck our insulin response.

And to make this all worse baked chips dont taste anything like or anywhere as good as fried chips.

Not being a medical person but just from a lifetime of observation, it certainly is contributing to it.

You make a good point there that I chose not to bring up. I have a lot of problems and strongly disagree with many of the ingredients companies use and the way they are allowed to advertise and mislead with them. 1000000% percent agree with you on that.

Hell, last week at the grocery store, there were four cars lined up in the fire lane in front of the store with their flashers on, just waiting for whoever was in the store to come out because they apparently can't walk 30 feet to an actual parking place. This is getting more and more common.

Ya and you know I think this is about more than being lazy, this is about not caring about others.

Another thing, and this is new I think, I am watching people in parking lots throw trash from their car into the parking lot, not just dumping soda or whatnot but now it is the cups and stuff too.

I think the two biggest culprits to health issues are bleached white flour and refined sugar.
They are just about in anything you put in your cart that has been processed.
They both cause the pancreas and the thyroid to work overtime for your body to process the crap which leads to things like diabetes, thyroid problems that lead to other health issues.

A lot of folks watching their weight throw into their carts things that are labeled low-fat but most of them are packed full of sugar like yogurt. Have you ever read the number of grams of sugar in kid's foods like Go-urts or Granimal yogurt drinks? Cripe sake you might as well give them a Twinkie or donut. Nothing healthful about them.

Yes soda drinks are not good but so is anything packed full of refined sugars.

I do not however believe in banning food items because they cause health problems nor adding extra taxes to them but at the same time I don't believe it is my responsibility to cover your insurance either because of your poor life choices.
