Is tweeting acceptable for a sitting President? Or, even a good idea.

For the purposes of this thread, completely ignore specific content of the tweets. It is a new form of communication, and is it appropriate for a President to do it?

ETA: I will add that a person's answer should be the same regardless who the current President is, and should be the same when the WH switched parties.

Who the hell cares?

Perfectly fine, but not for work related subject matter.

Tweeting is absolutely acceptable for a sitting President. It provides a method of communication where the man sitting in the highest office of the land has direct contact with the American people. It can give us a more human, honest perception of the President. With that being said, the sitting President should also be able to show a great deal of maturity, and restraint when using social media. Something one of our two sitting Presidents in the Twitter age has been unable to do.

You do. You took the time to say something. Your attempts to portray yourself as above the fray are nothing but thinly veiled lies.

I don't give a damn what Trump, or anyone else does. It's his decision how to spend his time.

Ok, rarely used and filtered through a competent censor.

sure. however, for Trump, it's not a good idea. his filter sucks, and he would have to do a lot of filtering to hide his incompetence.

IMO yes, twitter itself it is an appropriate method. The way trump is using it though, is not.

I think it is awesome to here from the president directly instead of trying to sift through all the bias media truth twisting and deception.

Is television acceptable for a sitting president? Radio?

I flat-out call BS. If you truly didn't care, you wouldn't comment so much. You're obviously reading the topics, ergo you DO care. If you truly didn't care, you'd be doing something else and coming here less often.

I think it’s fine, even desirable, for The White House to do official tweets to clarify positions, express sympathy, and, in general counter fake news. For s latest NATO OMG!! Vote where we voted against a resolution that called for abolishing the death penalty for homosexuals. Tweeting out that we voted against it because it also abolished the death penalty would have served a very worthwhile purpose.

The President himself tweeting? I think a sitting president ought to wear socks on his hands at all times.

I'm not keen on it. The very name "tweet" does not lend itself well to Presidential dignity. Also the format seems to lend itself to casual, short (and often ill considered) comments.

I would rather they didn't. Or at least, not often.

While I personally wouldn't do it and might prefer Presidents not to, the fact is that past Presidents have used new technology to address issues directly to the Public.

FDR used radio during his "fireside chats." Many President's have used television to speak directly to the people, most famously John F. Kennedy.

President Obama was no stranger to tweeting, although he was more reserved about it.

Mr. Trump's seem more problematic simply because he uses it like an average customer, without much screening of what he posts.

Still, to him it might be his way of getting a feel for the pulse of his supporter's on his take on handling issues.

I frown on it like I do most social media, but it's going to be used anyway. :twocents:

I have not decided but I am leading towards this being a negative in the functionality of the WH so it should not be done. The WH needs to work as a team, and I suspect that this messes that up.

I miss hearing/reading those words together!

Thank you!

Why shouldn't it be fine to use every possible means of communication? Though we all know that the medium is the message it shouldn't be much different than speaking into a mike on the way into a meeting. It's more that a president might want to think things through more than others must before tweeting.

PS: politicians I know don't ever write their own tweets of Facebook stuff. Theie offices do.

In the internet age absolutely. The media can not filter what is being said.
President's Trump use of twitter has changed the way future presidents will communicate.

Never say never. I don’t view it as being dignified, however.

Tweeting is never going to be advisable when the President has the brains of a large rabbit.

Some future presidents could tweet when necessary addressing the entire country, keeping it respectful and presidential.

Trump cannot seem to comprehend this decorum ... or honor and abide by it.

Trump uses Twitter as a political weapon, as a whipping post, and as a secret-squirrel handshake with his narrow base.

I see no issue in allowing the president (or any politician for that matter)to make the the "rope" with which they will hang themselves.

What’s your beef with rabbits?

Modern communication. Go directly to the people in real time. Genius.
