Which of the above nation-states represents the greatest threat to American interests, in your mind?

I was torn between Russia and China but it seems like we can actually make progress there where as Russia will oppose our interests just to oppose us.

Great question. This one is tough to answer, because you can make a case for pretty much any of the choices given. I settled on Russia given the potential for further cooperation with Iran, particularly on Syria and, by extension, broader Middle Eastern policy.

I don't think that the greatest danger is from a particular state or group of states but from the multipolar structure of international security that is developing. With proliferation progressing as it is the probability of a third Great War in out century and quite likely by midcentury is becoming virtually certain. That puts us at risk even without being directly involved. A war between Saudi Arabia and Iran or Pakistan and India or India and Russia or China could mean somewhere between a hundred millions and six billions or more total deaths around the world. Nuclear Winter will not be nice.

That is partially why Russia opposes the US. But it is also often about harming other major powers and breaking up allegiances.

The danger from the collapsing world order especially the economy is far and away the biggest current threat. The Elite Class has finally figured out that there is a problem but they dont understand how big it is, they are not motivated to work on it, nor are they anywhere near good enough to solve it before BIG PAIN arrives. What form that pain comes in remains to be seen, but use of nuclear weapons or nuclear pollution (dirty bombs) is highly probable.

China- within 15-20 years they will challenge the US militarily.

China, the CCP are fundamentally opposed to Western values and everything the West stands for and unlike Russia have the power to effect things and is already trying to attack Western ideals. The CCP is no better than the Nazi party.

None of the above. It isn't a nation, it's a religion. Islam.

No nation on earth can destroy the USA without equally assured carnage.

But with that said, we Americans are potentially eating ourselves. We are splintered up into groups who do not want to listen to each other.

Just a opinion from a broken down old sailor.

No people, nation, oppose freedom and democracy. Regimes, not nations, are threats to Enlightenment/Western values.

The United States represents the greatest threat to American interests.

Jedbaron96:

Define the American interests being threatened. If you mean economic interests then probably China. If you mean political interests then, although not on your list, probably a united Europe which is growing bolder in effectively challenging American exceptionalism. If you mean military hegemony then a combination of China, Russia and some distracting non-state actors. If you mean the general public interests of the American people then the USA itself and its increasingly oligarchic and authoritarian state would be the number one threat. If you mean the physical safety of your citizens then in the immediate future a combination of a militarist USA butting heads with a delusional but very canny North Korean regime is a reasonable candidate for the top position. In the medium term your close alliance with Saudi Arabia. In the long run The People's Republic of China and you yourselves are the greatest comprehensive threats to the widest spectrum of American interests.

Cheers.

We are our own worst enemy.

We get the Iranians pissed off in the first place by deposing a democratically elected leader and prop up the Shah to secure our interests.

The Soviet Union allows freedom to Eastern Europe and we immediately try to enroll them all in NATO, an organization antagonistic to Russia.

Question; does anyone here know the geography of Russia? While we sit here dumb and happy with two great oceans protecting us and peaceful countries to the north and south, the invasion route into Russia is one big highway.

How would we like it if Mexico and Canada signed up for membership in a reconstituted Warsaw Pact? Crap, we went ape shyte crazy when the Russians put missiles in Cuba; threw up a blockade and starting digging bomb shelters. At that same time we had missiles right next door to Russia in Turkey.

Quit being so Amercentric; try to see the world from the other guys point of view.

In the long run? China definitely.

I think given the way the question is worded, the answer has to obviously be China. They are pretty much the only nation that could potentially threaten the US on any economic or military basis. The only threat Russia poses is from an espionage stand point but China could easily surpass them on that front as well.

It already does; Russia just happens to be more prominent in the current media cycle. The three top subterfuge threats (or at least, the three nations engaging in the most subterfuge/spycraft against the US) are China, Russia and Israel in that order.

Russia is definitely the most threatening nation currently.

China will perhaps be a greater menace in the future. It depends on how numerous geopolitical aspects play out.
