I agree with you that the former Soviet Union committed great crimes. Most empires do. But no major power will stand still for letting their perceived enemy control their border regions. It's seen, correctly, as a provocation. Your comment about eastern European countries thumbing their noses at Russia is quaint, but hardly historically a good policy. We wouldn't stand for missiles in Cuba, threw up that blockade, and built fallout shelters. We attempted to assassinate Castro several times, and even invaded Cuba. Just goes to show we are willing to go to any length, including nuclear war, in order to retain our hegemony.

Your own link shows that your claim that there was deliberate use of tainted blankets is still not one widely accepted and indeed rather hotly contested---- and there's still only proof of one incident even so!

Russia does not control the countries they once subjagated--- actions have consequences, and Russia's utterly alienated "the border regions".

The countries have every right to decide whatever they want. Russia seeing them not wanting to be Russian puppets as "provocative" is irrelevant.

Yep, we built quite a few fallout shelters throughout the Cold War. Your point being......

Only we didn't go to nuclear war.

I was torn between Russia and China but it seems like we can actually make progress there where as Russia will oppose our interests just to oppose us.

We've got such an interdependent relationship with China that they have a vested self-interest in our financial well-being. That's not to say that they will always operate in ways which support us, but it means that they aren't going to try to take us down to the point where is causes them harm. For example a complete economic collapse of our nation would bring about the same thing in China. They may do things which would bring us down a notch or two, but not much beyond that.

I don't think that the greatest danger is from a particular state or group of states but from the multipolar structure of international security that is developing. With proliferation progressing as it is the probability of a third Great War in out century and quite likely by midcentury is becoming virtually certain. That puts us at risk even without being directly involved. A war between Saudi Arabia and Iran or Pakistan and India or India and Russia or China could mean somewhere between a hundred millions and six billions or more total deaths around the world. Nuclear Winter will not be nice.

No nation will ever nuke anyone again. The results of dong so are too horrific for anyone to consider such an action. Any nation that did so would face the wrath of an extremely pissed off world. I could see a rogue group carrying out a nuclear strike, but I honestly believe that the time of nuclear war between nations is past. We've got tech today that can take down any nation in the world without nukes.

How is China or Russia any different than the US? We demand hegemony over this part of the world, and oppose any interference in our domain. We would not countenance a Mexican alliance with China, or Canada with Russia. We would never allow Chinese control of the Panama Canal. China resents American dominance in what they consider their rightful sphere of influence in the East, yet we ally with any countries we can right on their border if possible. We do the same with Eastern Europe vis a vis Russia. We are the threat to both of these great powers, in their views.

It's a titanic struggle for control of a part of this:

OH lord, what fools these mortals be.

read your history; disease was used as a weapon of war to eradicate Native Americans. Party of the agreement when the USSR let Eastern Europe go was that they stay neutral. The US has been trying ever since to change that. But you keep thinking Amercentric about the larger world.
Iirc, more people from Native American nations died between Columbus and Jamestown than were alive post Jamestown.

The early explorers and conquistadors brought diseases over which wiped out millions of folks before the rest of the Europeans got here.

What the European immigrant saw when they arrived in what would become the US was a decimated population. Even if they had instantly killed everyone who was alive at that moment, disease still would have been the bigger killer.

iirc that is

Other- America

What else do you think will persuade the global community to pool their security in communally guaranteed protection of peace and populations? Iraq might possibly ave done it but Obama blew it. But, you see, we will certainly have a Great War in a decade or so, if we don't pool security and its making. That will also almost certainly mean nuclear combat with between tens of millions and a couple of billions of dead. I really don't go with your theory that risking that is better.

It's not a nation, but people from many nations. Anyone who practices Marxism and Social Darwinism are the true threat.

Or anything to the equivalent to it, like Islam.

Which of the above nation-states represents the greatest threat to American interests, in your mind?

I wonder how many voted Russia only voted that way because they felt that Russian influenced our election.

The American left

I would have to agree...Liberal/progressives/socialist/anarchist/antifa are all left wing nut cases that want to destroy America as we have know it, as American sacrificed to preserve it the left is out to destroy.

The U.S. itself is its own greatest threat. We are showing the early signs of political collapse.

I bet McCain would say 'all of the above". Thank goodness he was shellacked when he ran in 2008.

The appeal of "Jews will not replace us", "Blood and soil", "Russia is our friend." A much bigger threat than opponents of systemic racism, xenophobia, Nazism, fascism, Russian oligarchs, Islamophobia.

They hardly make up even a miniscule fraction of the population, but blacks killing blacks and Democrats do nothing is a bigger problem.

Blacks kill blacks and Democrats? How do they know who to shoot? Do they ask for the voter registration card first?

In Virginia you aren't required to register with a party, so a voter card wouldn't do much good.

I was torn between Russia and China but it seems like we can actually make progress there where as Russia will oppose our interests just to oppose us.

The US has been actively working against Russian interests for the past 3 admins. The various colour revolutions have been actively diminishing the Russian sphere of influence. The US worked hard to change the Ukrainian government twice in the last 20 years, the last through a coup or revolution in which the US provided assistance. So the US tried to take away one of Russia's most important naval bases (in Crimea) and a less important one but I believe symbolically important one in Syria (Tartus). Up until Crimea/Ukraine, potentially Georgia, Russia was being reactionary and not proactive. This past election seems to indicate Russia is going to play the same role in US politics that the US has played in Russian, and countries near Russian politics

Hmmm.. so that won't work. Maybe Democrats have a special facial feature or something, otherwise, how will they ever know who to shoot?

Since the majority of black vote for democrats......

That takes care of shooting black Democrats, but surely there must be some white ones as well. Are they to get off without being shot?

They typically have a moronic look on their faces.
