I agree with you that the former Soviet Union committed great crimes. Most empires do. But no major power will stand still for letting their perceived enemy control their border regions. It's seen, correctly, as a provocation. Your comment about eastern European countries thumbing their noses at Russia is quaint, but hardly historically a good policy. We wouldn't stand for missiles in Cuba, threw up that blockade, and built fallout shelters. We attempted to assassinate Castro several times, and even invaded Cuba. Just goes to show we are willing to go to any length, including nuclear war, in order to retain our hegemony.
Your own link shows that your claim that there was deliberate use of tainted blankets is still not one widely accepted and indeed rather hotly contested---- and there's still only proof of one incident even so!
Russia does not control the countries they once subjagated--- actions have consequences, and Russia's utterly alienated "the border regions".
The countries have every right to decide whatever they want. Russia seeing them not wanting to be Russian puppets as "provocative" is irrelevant.
Yep, we built quite a few fallout shelters throughout the Cold War. Your point being......
Only we didn't go to nuclear war.
