The following chart shows that hate group numbers have risen steadily in the US, since 2000, other than a small downturn around 2011-2014.

However, the number of hate groups isn't necessarily indicative of hateful trends. Many hateful people don't join a group, but align themselves with the sentiment. This poll is not intended to point fingers at any Party. Most responsible citizens in both major Parties, and in other Parties, don't agree with hate and hateful violence. In your view, what is the status of hate in the US?

Its alive and thriving.....even cancer does not seem to spread as quickly.

But we should be asking ourselves what is feeding it....and I don't think there is a single, simple answer. Like many disease's....it requires a host and food source.

Also, we have to keep in mind that a pre-existing group can experience growths in membership, or number of chapters, and that won't be reflected in the stats either (and many groups HAVE seen a large increases in membership and chapters).

Anyway, yes, it is increasing. And that shouldn't be something that surprises people. Hate always increasing in volatile socioeconomic times. It's an easy way for people to express their rage. It should be something we prepare to watch out for whenever unstable times come.

I do not know if hate is increasing ... I suspect it is not .... but there is little doubt that the election of Trump has given license and a new sense of freedom to haters who now believe they can come out from under those rocks and their hidey holes and say in public what they have been reluctant to say outside of their close circle of fellow bigots for years now.

I'd say the hate is increasing...how can it not be, given the divisiveness in the states. I know the OP was meant to address hate groups specifically, and while I think "hate" is becoming very mainstream when it comes to establishing tribes, it is also fueling hate groups who, as haymarket rightly pointed out. It's not only enabling them, it's giving them a sense of purpose, and encouraging them to be bolder. And in response, the hatred from the Left to the Right has increased, resulting in groups like Antifa.

So yes, I would say hate is on the rise in America. Surprising? Not to me...armchair political analysts have been calling this ever since it appeared that Trump had a shot of actually succeeding.

The SPLC goes out of its way to label things "hate groups," so these numbers are not very reliable.

There's no particular evidence that actual "hate groups" are significantly on the rise. What's increasing is the already-outsized attention paid to tiny groups.

Westboro Baptist Church: ~30 people.

Richard Spencer's group: ~200 people.

Most groups: <20 people.

You're talking about low tens of thousands in a country of ~330 million. If that number increases by even 50%, it's still tens of thousands.

What I can't understand is why race? If we're gonna make a hate group, hate a group of people who deserve it. Like politicians. Kardashions. Etc.

Hate is decreasing and has been for a long time. No matter what the media reports and what this cooks are doing now its going down. That's part of the reason why these cooks are in a panic. Hate group numbers going up just means people are OPENLY hating, they were still haters before. Theres very little to no NEW hat being made in any increased fashion. Normal people don't work that way.

Perhaps, if you compare to the pre-Civil-Rights movement of the '50s and '60s.

Nope to any time, better than it's ever in my lifetime and better than it's ever been.
