I read a comparison of President Trump to Emperor Claudius that sounded about right.

Both were born into wealthy families.

Neither had ever held public office before becoming the leaders of their respective empires.

Both had been business men high rollers in their private lives and both were alleged to have been cut-throat tycoons who swindled rich and poor alike.

Claudius had what is arguably a successful reign with a successful invasion of Britain, Anatolia and North Africa and was considered generally a successful leader.

We'll have to wait to see if President Trump is a successful leader until after he finishes his 8 years in office just as Claudius served 13 years before he died in office.

Nero.

There. I said it first.

Nero? He killed his own mother for starters, not to mention torturing and executing christians.

Trump is many things, but I doubt you can compare him with any Roman emperor, life was very different back in those days.

I was referring to "fiddling while Rome burned". I know nothing of Trump's relationship with his mother or his position on torturing and executing Christians. I am guessing that he opposes the latter.

The lesser known Emperor Supercilious. :D

Romulus Augustulus? A young man that could bring things to an end.

Trump is still alive and all Roman emperors have been dead and buried for a long time.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

This is a time-wasting thread that accomplishes nothing.

Shrubnose, do you honestly think there's been a single thread on this entire website that has ever accomplished anything beyond changing one or two people's opinions?

More importantly, do you toss wet blankets onto EVERY history-related thread you come across? If not, what made this one special?

Take a long hike on a short pier.

This thread is a total waste of time and accomplishes nothing.

While we can't make a full judgement of Trump's Presidency at this point, I would say that he's shaping up to have the legacy of Tiberius, but not the fantastic economic record. Like Tiberius, Trump has done a stellar job of pissing off everyone in the media, and has left a definite impression of hating his job. I don't believe he has actually been destructive enough to be a Nero, and I don't think he'll be successful enough to be a Claudius, but he's at least got the frustration to be a Tiberius.

Then why are you commenting on it? There are so many threads on here that have no actual impact on the world for you to bitch about, you simply do not have the time to dally here! Go on, you have much more work to do to make sure everyone knows you don't care about their threads!

None are a great fit but for the purposes of the poll I will say Caligula...

The frustration of being Claudius. :)

As long as he doesn't turn out to be Julius Caesar, the guy who ended the republic

While there was indeed a great fire in the city during his reign, the story of him "fiddling" (which is doubtful since fiddles werent invented at that time) while Rome burned could be apocrypha.

Tiberius? Please tell me youre joking.

LOL the mad emperor? I doubt Trump could come close to the depravity of Caligula's reign.

Marcus Aurelius. Despite personal flaws he put the best interest of Rome first and wanted to return it to a republic. He was considered the last of the 5 Good Emperors, His death is cited as the end of the Pax Romana and the start of Rome's downfall.

President Trump has personal flaws (minor ones compared to most of his predecessors). "America First" is prioritizing his own country's best interest first. Every relevant policy he has decreases Federal Govt power over our personal freedoms, restoring the Constitutional Republic created by our Founding Fathers. If Leftist Democrats achieve their goals Trump will probably go down in history as the last of the good Presidents and America will start its downfall.

And now you have all pictured Trump at an orgy.

Give him time.

What's wrong with my assessment?

...Also, if Nero fiddling is apocryphal, than so was Caligula being mad - all of the really ****ed up stories basically amount to "X said that when Caligula was emperor..." I would guess that Caligula, much like Tiberius, was an unyielding **** that pissed off everyone in the senate for some reason, but unlike Tiberius, wasn't a competent enough leader to keep someone from putting a knife in him.
