The US government is not seeking a regime change in North Korea, the secretary of state says, amid tensions over Pyongyang's weapons programme."We're not your enemy," Rex Tillerson said, adding that the US wanted a dialogue at some point.

Is there a difference between these two comments?

1) We are not your enemy.
2) You are not our enemy.

Poll Question: Should Trump Administration start a dialogue with NK?

Under the umbrella of "we're not your enemy"?

I thought talking with the bad guys/commies was a big fat no-no.
You know, like with Cuba and such.

The US is no longer the enemy of horrible tyranny? Disgraceful.

That's why I asked this:

Is Tillerson using a bit of double-speak?

We are not your enemy, but you certainly are our enemy?

I hope so. It'd still be weak. We are not the enemy of the NK people, but we are (I hope) still the enemy of horribly tyrannical regimes.

The NK people are not our enemy (the regime is), so qualifying the double-speak with "the people" doesn't really work.

This is not to say I'm against dialogue.

America should pull all her troops out of the region and leave the area's business to those who live in the area.

When will American's learn that butting into things that are none of her business is useless, costly and almost always makes things a LOT worse for almost all concerned.

North Korea is not going to threaten America if America leaves the region alone.

And save the 'fighting tyranny' bull****. Saudi Arabia is a horrific regime that crushes freedoms for it's people and I don't hear Trump screaming about them...quite the contrary.

And save the 'we must help our allies' bull****. What the hell does being South Korea's ally do for America? Nothing except allow a bunch of stupid, traitorous neo cons to have yet another military base to try and control the world from.

What goes on in North Korea (short of major genocide) is no more America's business than what goes on in America is NK's business...ZIP.

And if you disagree...I don't much care.

I agree with you on many levels.

I would think China would be about ready to bitch-slap NK for being such a childish neighbor.

I don't know why it appears that the USofA is the only nation on Earth who reacts to NK and their saber rattling.

Talking to North Korea would only legitimize their actions, and we aren't going to convince the nutcase running that show of anything. I don't think it's worth starting a dialogue.

A nice ideal to strive for, but we've been in bed with monsters for ages. Saudi Arabia is probably the best example of the kinds of monsters we work with in the modern day, but there are plenty of other scumbags we've sided with for political convenience.

Wasn't it once thought to be "treasonous" to even consider starting a dialog with countries like NK and Cuba?

I guess it depends on who the POTUS is???? ;)

We've had dialogues with NK in the past without any lasting success.

Kim Jong-un and his regime are convinced that the US seeks to invade NK on any pretext, thus their need for a credible nuclear deterrent.

I have nothing against meaningful dialogue, but I highly doubt any meaningful dialogue can transpire/bear fruit with Kim Jong-un.

NK has the knowledge to fabricate nuclear warheads and successfully test long-range ICBMs. The uncertainties atm are targeting-technology and MAD-rationality/first-strike doctrine.

NK is perhaps a year away from possessing the ultimate WMD. Why would they stop now? Besides, this knowledge genie can't be put back into the bottle.

There is a huge difference between ''bad guys'' and ''commies'' .
Maybe the dialogs work not , but non-dialog can be worse .. remember to keep both your friends and enemies close .

The USA must force NK into discussions with the USA, Japan, SK, Russia, and China.

No ifs ands or buts.

If NK won't do it, the our cyber warfare group needs to turn of the electricity in NK and bomb the missile sites.

Do you care if people agree?

I suspect he needs a boogeyman to help keep his people in line, and we're his convenient boogeyman.

That said, I'm fine with dialogue in concept, as long as we don't start giving away too much to keep them at the table (which we are prone to do), though in this case I don't think it'd do a damn bit of good.

Definitely a dialog:

Yo... Fat Boy! Keep the **** up for much longer and your power is going off. Kapish???

Of course we should. Talking, or at least attempting to talk, should always come before open conflict.

The Trump administration had already been doing a dialogue with NK. It wasn't well publicized.
