For most of you, this question is basically a no-brainer. Personally though, I find it interesting to note how the term "Fake News," which initially popped up as a criticism brought up initially by the Democrats as a reason for their loss in 2016 and how it's morphed into Trump expressing contempt towards outlets like CNN and the New York Times for publishing stories he doesn't like.

What are your thoughts?

For the most part he's using it for sensationalism and deflection. It's not to say that our News-Entertainment is some altruistic source of journalistic integrity. It's not, it's news-entertainment. But Trump isn't trying to go after the media because of it's clear news-entertainment bias, but rather to deflect away from the scrutiny he faces.

That, plus it's a rallying cry for his Suckers.

Republican voters have been complaining about the "liberal media" for years. They used to blame the media for W. Bush's woes as well.

However, Trump has definitely taking it to a new level. Now anything negative about Trump or Republicans is "Fake News" to the GOP's base. Trump knows he can do whatever he wants, and GOP voters will never abandon him. All he has to do is scream "Fake News!" and bash Hillary Clinton or Obama, and his supporters are happy.

At this point its just his contempt, though I can see he enjoys how it gets under their skin. But one cannot say they are not constantly earning it with some of the trash they decide to run with.

Trump calling the MSM fake is the ultimate crow calling the raven black.

I would say that Trump exploiting the term "fake news" to play on emotions of his base and as an excuse for articles that are not good for Trump.

The use of the term defiantly changed and Trump was a major player in that. “Fake news” was initially coined to refer to deliberate satire (though often heavily masked), people publishing this they specifically made up for their own entertainment, to get advertising hits or for political manipulation. As sometimes happened in the past, a couple of those satire stories were erroneously propagated by people who thought (or wanted to believe) they were true and even picked up by some mainstream media.

Trump (and others) took the term to refer to something quite different, mainstream media sources publishing stories that were largely based on fact but with partisan spin, exaggeration or speculation presented as fact. This has been common in the media industry pretty much as long as it has existed but it’s only been referred to as “fake news” recently and only generally in the US. Here in the UK, the tabloid newspapers are notorious for it but we don’t have any special term for it. Sadly, it’s just seen as normal.
