Contrary to urban legend, an M-80 that contains 3,000 mg of powder is not equivalent to a quarter-stick of dynamite. Dynamite generally contains a stable nitroglycerin based high explosive, whereas M-80s or any other kind of firecracker contains a low explosive powder, like flash powder or black powder.[6] Some illicits, however, contain(ed), or were reported[by whom?] to contain, small amounts of picric acid (similar to TNT), for greater effect.[citation needed]
Interesting-I guess it was the urban legend I heard as a kid. Living in Ohio, the big deal was knowing someone who would drive I75 down to Florida for spring break because Tennessee was the "free state" when it came to fireworks. There was a place right across the ohio river that sold them but you had to know someone who knew someone to get something more than ladyfingers or sparklers. Now Indiana has must about anything and as long as you sign a form saying you are taking them out of the state (easy to do living in Ohio) they will sell most stuff. Ohio now has fireworks sales but again, you have to sign that form. So most of my friends who actually understand things drive to the Indiana border because perjury is a serious offense-having firecrackers in ohio is minor league and I have never heard of any one getting prosecuted for shooting them off on the week of July fourth unless you are say aiming sky rockets at People or their houses
