Are Christie's actions and justification legit?

I say no, because... THIS is exactly why the people have such disdain for government. Not willing to live under the same rules they set for everyone else.

Christie’s family gets beach all to themselves after NJ shutdown

Please note that this is a summer home, not a primary home. Everyone else had to change their summer plans. His claim that neither he nor his family and guests are specious. They're going to use services of some kind, even if only security, etc. They wouldn't let anyone else in that promised to be 100% self-sufficient. Why should they get to? If the place it's closed, it should be closed.

Note: Please refrain from the partisan claptrap. This type of thing is common across party lines.

ETA: Oh, yeah, his disdain for his citizens is truly appalling: “The governor has a residence at Island Beach,” he said. “Others don’t. That’s the way it goes. Run for governor and you can have the residence.”

Politicians do this **** all the time. Like anti-2nd amendment politicians who enact all kinds of anti-2nd amendment laws to make it extremely hard for the common man to enjoy the protection of a gun while they themselves enjoy the protection of armed security personal.Or anti-school choice politicians who send their kids to finest private schools or enroll their kids in the best public schools in wealthy neighborhoods while dooming everyone else kids to lousy public schools.

If Christie closed the public beaches down and then used those public beaches while they were closed to everyone else then that is ****ed up and hypocritical of him. It doesn't matter if he has a summer home on one of those beaches. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

Sounds like New Jersey keeps a residence or retreat for the Governor in or on that beach park.

“The governor has a residence at Island Beach,"

If that is the case, it is like Camp David for the president. Then his present there is legit and legal. In very poor politically taste for sure. But the governor has a right to go to his retreat if he wishes. Politically, he is a lame duck, his term is over come January and can't run again. So Christie has nothing to lose being an obnoxious blowhard with no or very little respect for the people of New Jersey.

The cameltoe in the above picture gave me a full body shudder.

I know. You would think they could find a larger size of pants for his crotch. It looks like he has a vagina.

I don't think that is even possible.

Given that he has more than one official residence, and this is considered more of a "retreat", and I believe he at least at one time refused to live in any of them as his primary residence prefering to stay in his own home, I will respectfully disagree it's legit.

The deeper issue, to me, is the virtual "Eff you" he is giving the citizens. Again, to me, people don't feel this way just because they're a lame duck and they're pissy about it. This is a window into how he feels toward the citizens all the time, just normally he would never say or act so as long as he needs votes from them.

People would do well to remember this attitude should he ever run fro anything in the future, but we probably won't.

I suppose it depends on how one defines legit. Is it legal for a governor to stay at a governor's retreat? Sure it is. Has he given the people of New Jersey the middle finger, sure he has. Following the written law or what is legal as the law is written is sometimes morally bankrupt. Plain and down right wrong. As is Christie in this case.

Since bridgegate, Christie has been dead politically. He'll never again win an elected office, especially in New Jersey. I think he knows this. That is why he said what he did. That is unless his buddy Trump gives him a job.

I thought the article was a bit misleading.
The beach was shut down because of the budget, to all but residents.
The only resident appears to be whoever is the sitting Governor, although it looks like there are two
other houses there.

Thank you longview. I did see Christie's explanation for why the beach was closed and that his house was right there. But I didn't realize that it was made clear that it was not closed to residents.

OMFG .......... the sight of ALL OF THAT FAT is grossing me out ................ I think I just barfed .............

they closed the beach because they didn't want the beach to be covered in barf

but on the bright side: just think of all of the whale oil they could get from all of that blubber ............... it could power Atlantic City for a year, maybe ..........

I actually get that there were different rules for residents....but the optics are horrible.

To me, The designation "retreat" makes it not legit under these circumstances. If it were his primary residence, that would be legit. A vacation home is an extra. The whole point of a government shut-down is to try to force a resolution by inconveniencing the people by taking away uncritical "extras", and our elected representatives are still (well, supposed to be) just part of 'the people',

Saw on the tv news last night that he criticized the media for "not having anything better to do". (paraphrasing)

I guess he couldn't come up with a legit response, so he just pointed fingers away from himself. Problem is, that's precisely part of the media's job, to report on inappropriate government indulgence.

Once "Our Elected Leaders," are elected, they cease to be part of the people. How much legislation that is passed by congress exempts congress from the very laws they pass? Quite a lot. That was one of Gingrich's main points with the contract with America back in 1994. But once in office or in control of congress, he did the exact same thing.

I don't think a government shutdown is there to inconvenience the elected few. Usually it is done to try to get the people to force the elected few into solving the problem. To get the people on one side or the other by stating look what so and so did, he shut down the government. You can beat your bottom dollar the elected few aren't inconvenienced at all to include Christie.

Usually one side or the other tries to use the shutdown to force the other side to come around to their point of view. At a minimum to create a compromise. Using the retreat was very stupid politically, but as governor he is authorized to do so. Shutdown or not.

I'm going to respectfully disagree that they are no longer of the people. They're supposed to be. That's why they're called representatives, and not some other name. Now, I fully agree that they do separate themselves via legislation and other means, that has long been a problem, but I disagree (with them) that they do so legitimately. They shouldn't. This particular scenario is just a small example of that mindset. We shouldn't let them get away with it. That could be a whole thread by itself, too.

I may have misspoke or phrased awkwardly in one part of my post. I mean that shut downs are to inconvenience the people not the politicians. My apologies if that didn't come through properly. If you look at the federal government, and I'm sure states do the same thing, not all that much is actually shut down. Most functions are designated 'critical' and left operating. What is shut down are high-profile functions, some of which are honestly not critical, that the public will see and feel impact. There is a part of me that always wonders if they could keep everything open if they really wanted to. I mean, if they can give vouchers to vendors in other areas, I believe they could here, too.

He was authorized to do so. But, as not his primary residence, he shouldn't have been. And it is right for the press and the people to call him out on it.

I think the more important question is why does the governor get a beach house at the expense of the tax payers?

I am no fan of Governor Christie, however he does own a beach house at that same beach. Going there is for all practical purposes going home. Now if there were goods and services he was able to take advantage of which would only be available if the beach was open to the public, then people would have a legit gripe. Otherwise, get over it. He has a right to go to his own beach house.

I totally agree with the last sentence. Doing something just because you can doesn't make it right and for sure, the press and the people have a right to call him on it. I doubt Christie gives a darn. Since bridgegate Christie has been damaged goods, what is a bit more damage gonna cause him since he is gone in January anyway.

As for the rest, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense to me.

I don't believe he owns it. I believe the state owns it. Regardless, it is not his primary residence.
