No they didn't. They took the lead from the left's MSM partners.
Trump complemented the Khans. He did so twice when asked by Stephanopoulos.
Khan dances on his son's grave for political gain, is encouraged by the DNC to do it, and Trumps says that Khan looks like a nice guy, and he wishes them well.
That's it. Khans wife joined him on the stage. One would expect she might be there for more reason than just being a prop. Commenting that she didn't say anything has no intent or hidden agenda behind it. I thought the same thing.
But no, the left's MSM partners spin a complement into an insult of a religion and it's followers, and an insult to a family who lost a son.
One of the most pathetic and despicable acts the left's MSM has pulled, but sadly not the worst.
On second thought, I do have a problem with what Trump said.
Looks like a nice guy? Why, did he expect Khan to look like some middle eastern terrorist? Why did he say that? Would he have said the same thing speculating about someone of white European descent? I doubt it.
The media didn't spin anything. They reported what happened, but you see what you are looking to find even without evidence. That's called a conspiracy theory. That's what your argument is. Sounds good to you and seems plausible so you believe it.
