Gallup: Americans Hold Record Liberal Views on Most Moral Issues

As a Libertarian you should support people's right to do all of those things, no matter what. A Liberal believes in the freedom to choose but regulations and limits are needed.
I jave a difficult time seeing what freedoms modern libreals fight for. They seem to be more interested in telling people how they must live and behave.

Maybe it's liberals that have the "anything goes" mindset.

Yep, the have an "anything goes" mindset, and want to control what others do..

and they accept all of those things listed in the OP...

and they want to control others...

Who are these confused people being called "liberals" anyway? I don't think we're even talking about the same ideology at all.

This is pretty much just the march of progress. What was considered revolutionary 50 years ago is mainstream today. And what is considered revolutionary today will be mainstream in 50 years. Society continuously changes and gets more liberal over time.

I think this is pretty much correct. Taken farther, I would suggest that liberalism is a luxury that usually gains strength as a society gains a certain level of comfort and loses its fear of day-to-day individual struggles to survive.

I think this corresponds to America becoming less religious over the years. A movement away from god if you will. Both Pew Research and Gallup show that in 2007 78% of all Americans considered themselves Christians, today that is down to 71%. There is no doubt America is becoming a less religious society.

Does being less religious equate to a more liberal political philosophy? I have heard some Republicans refer to Communism and the Democratic Party as being the godless party. There was a time when being religious wasn't equated with a political party or philosophy. But then the religious right a rose with close ties to the GOP and it became so. Prior to the rise of the religious right which attached themselves to the Republican Party in the 80's and the abortion fight in the 70's. Being religious was taken for granted by both of our parties.

Meaning open to change. Well, change was sorely needed on most of those issues fifty years ago it seems to me.

Actually, that is pretty much what they believed at that point in now acient history.
;)

and they still do. The problem is, the label has been placed on people who have different views today.

Good morning, Pero. :2wave:

:agree: You have posted very interesting - and not totally surprising to me - survey results! Perhaps it's more of a generational thing today?

I have posted several times on here that a song that was popular many many years ago titled Anything Goes seems to have found millions of new believers in our ever-increasing, more permissive society today, and while we have more freedom to act as we wish, it has brought new problems that will have to be solved if we hope to slow our descent into something our founders probably never intended for this country, IMO.

While our Constitution and Bill of Rights makes us unique on this planet, they also carry obligations that our laws be obeyed by all of us who live in America, and that seems to be disappearing and replaced by "anything goes" thinking, not only by some of our elected leaders in government, but in too many other areas like high finance and personal responsibility for our interactions with others as well, which include riots and destruction of other people's property just because some want everything their way? :thumbdown

I think your anything goes began in the 60's, at least that when it had its greatest growth. If you look at the list in the OP, most of what is on the list, most religions frown on. I think my question of when did being less religious or non-religious become a liberal philosophy? Certainly not in the 1950's when I grew up, liberal, conservative, Republican, Democrat, all were very religious for the most part. This leads me to the 1960's as the starting point where being either less or non-religious became a political philosophy.

Most liberals I know today would consider porn as being a liberal idea or even killing oneself. Now not taking responsibility for one's actions seems to be growing quite a lot. Blaming others, society, environment and a host of other things for bad decisions made, bad actions taken is also on the rise. Another part of the liberal philosophy? No self-responsibility, a liberal idea?
