I don't dispute the fact that partisans would criticize him no matter when he did it. But for non-partisans, and even many Republicans, doing it now looks suspicious. It may just be appearances, but that matters in politics.

Did you really just rgumentum ad populum? You really have gone off the deep end. Answer the question then: why are liberals upset that James Comey was fired? They demanded it, Trump acquiesced, and now they're outraged that he did as they asked.

The answer to your question should be obvious to you...

Trump expressed confidence in Comey up to the point that the FBI director refused to rule out the Trump campaign's collusion with Russia.
No independently-minded successor to this position will feel secure leading an impartial investigation into Trump and his actions.

Politicians of all stripes are practicing hypocrits. Actually they're professional hypocrits. The Dems made a big issue of Russian interference in the election and have been unable to show any proof to support their accusations. Turning molehills into mountains will be the events that follow. They will all don shrouds of great indignity and a predictable sheeple will sanctify their every bogus utterance. The MSM doesn't like the damage to its' imagery since Donald twittered and bypassed the news twisters. They'll drag his dick in the dirt, as much as possible, but there is no proof sp they'll wind up with a black eye. It's OK, nobody will notice. The citizenry is complicit for their complacence and malaise. The Elite have the gov't and the sheeple are about to be sheared again. They seem to love it. The MSM will be begging Comey for dirt on anybody, but he's toast. He and Yates can start a nice consultancy to demonstrate how not to hatch eggs.
