The single European market is a good idea, it has just been implemented poorly on the ground level. In other words, the broader idea is good... but when you dig in to the weeds and the details, it's a big mess.

I'm in total agreement with having some kind of European project, but I think the current EU is close to being an unsalvageable mess and they would be better off starting over.

No, it seems to me that the EU can be salvaged, plus they have to since the economies of France, Germany, etc are at stake.

This is a good way to win back popularity. https://euobserver.com/opinion/134935

Hmm. I read the article, but to be honest, I didn't like it.

Here's why.... the article acknowledges the rise of populism around Europe, but it doesn't pin any of the blame for that on the EU's own policies. It seems to attribute the entire movement to rhetoric. As if... we stop saying bad, mean things about the EU, then people will suddenly love it.

Being an immigrant from Europe myself, I find this so typical. Europeans are so smart, and yet so dumb at the same time. These EU politicians are blinded by their own pomp.

I'm convinced that the rise in populism has nothing to do with rhetoric. The rhetoric is just a natural response to unpopular policies imposed on the populations of Europe.

In other words, the EU is out of touch with everyday Europeans.

That article is trying to say that the EU needs to communicate to survive, the reasons don't matter to me since the people they (they, as in the EU) talk to should make the political decisions on their own. The article is trying to get the EU a kick in the behind and start putting their message out to respond to the rhetoric. People that agree with that message will naturally support them. My uncle who lives in France supports the EU since he knows what they stand for and he agrees with them fundamentally.

That is what I took from the article anyway.

That looks like a dangerously naive glossing over of the real economic/policy specific problems with the Euro and the EU in general. It's not simply and purely a question of messaging, and people who would preserve the EU project assume this at their own peril.
