There needs to be a third option. If you use only limited sources for your news, you are doing a disservice to yourself . Diversify!

It's complicated.

The mainstream US media generally gets their facts right, but they tend to follow the latest shiny object instead of doing real journalism, such as investigative reporting. They are also way too soft when interviewing politicians, unlike organizations such as the BBC, who will press their targets much harder.

I don't trust MSMs, of any flavor, nor do I trust alternate media. I use them mostly to alert me about a thing and then I look into the thing for myself and don't need them tell me what to think about it.

If one believes the polls, most Americans don't. According to Gallup only 40% of all Americans have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media to report the news fully accurately and fairly.

Americans' Trust in Media Remains at Historical Low | Gallup

Myself, I switch news station and go back and forth usually between Fox and CNN. When a commercial comes on one, I go to the other and then back again when another commercial appears. I trust them to tell me what goes on and what has happened, but not the spin. News on TV has become a spinners world. What I would like is like Sergeant Friday on Dragnet used to say, "Just the facts." I don't care what all their guests think or their views of what has happened. Just let me know what has taken place and move on.

Do I trust them to what? Provide accurate accounting? Yes. Do I trust them to provide an accurate accounting free of sensationalist spin meant to entertain and draw in viewers? No.

The world is run by propaganda, it is what it is. All we can do is learn to spot the propaganda.

I trust nobody so I sure don't trust some pathetic 'major' news source.

If you get your news primarily from an American MSM - ANY American MSM - you probably don't have a blessed clue what is REALLY going on in the world.

Some are better than others, but most no longer give objectivity the old college try anymore. So you've got to spread you sources more widely and wisely.

Given the Wikileaks revelations, their shoddy journalism in the run up to the Iraq War, and their obviously biased election coverage, I can't understand how anyone trusts them.

Why isn't FOX included? isn't it the most watched MSM source out there?

I don't trust them but they are useful. They usually get big picture facts right. The details are almost always inaccurate, especially in the first day or two of a story breaking. And I almost never watch or read the editorial or opinion parts as I find them useless.

I'm guessing it is assumed sources like Fox and MSNBC aren't trustworthy?

Doesn't mainstream just mean what is the most popular? I realize it is used almost as a slur right now, but not including the most popular news channel on TV seems pretty dishonest in a conversation about mainstream news.

I agree. Fox is, in my opinion, Mainstream Media, as well.

I don't trust any news story that includes some variation of "unnamed sources". Doesn't matter if it's MSM or non-MSM.

I never would have believed this 20 years ago, but they are all Fake news, it is so obvious.

The MSM supports the War Machine, a/k/a, the Military Industrial Corporate Complex and any machinations to adjust the news to make the profitable Wars look justified. False Flags. Operation Gladio. Saddam WMD. Assad WMD. The War Machine is money, politicians, banks, or more simply, Corpora;tism. The sheeple don't seem to notice.

No, MSM has become just dishonest entertainment.

The question should be "do you trust the mainstream US politicians - who works for people who control the government?

No, I do not, nor do I trust FOX or any other major "news" outlet.

On non-political issues I trust them. When it comes to political issues I don't trust them. I got wonder what are they leaving out,are they pushing an agenda, are exaggerating the story, if they are only reporting one side, are they misrepresenting the facts, are they trying to emotionally blackmail us, did they edit anything in order to present only one side or are they trying to demonize someone.

I have more interest in Alternative Media. All of us are Alternative Media -- some of us have insignificantly small viewership.

But at least Alternative Media is free for us to be on.

No I don't. They regularly lie by omission, and being corporate/private/for profit means that they care more about ratings and ad revenue than telling the total truth.

Look at how many people voted no in the poll, and yet people will regularly cite the major news networks in order to prove that something "really happened". It's contradictory. Even here on DP, nothing can be posted in breaking news unless it's an "official news source".

I have a relative who works at Fox News and I've visited the studio. The grandiosity of scripting and technical expertise that goes into making "news" in America in the 21st century is nothing short of showbusiness. It hardly has anything to do with real journalism anymore.
