It is well known that a lot of right wingers in the USA vote against their best interests.

They vote against Obamacare, despite a lot of them being dependant on the ACA to survive. When asked about this, most of them don't even know that Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act are the same thing.

They vote against government subsidies for rural hospitals, roads, railroads, airports, etc. despite them being the only ones who benefit from those subsidies

They vote to cut EPA funding to clean up their towns and states, and keep their water drinkable and their air breathable.

Hillary Clinton offered rural coal mining communities job retraining and wind power careers. Instead, they voted for Trump who doesn't have any coherent plan to help them, except to cut funding for services that they depend on.

In essence, Hillbilly Joe Bob in West Virginia voted in 2016 to lower taxes on the "coastal elites" he hates so much and to cut funding to programs he probably depends on to survive.

Governess, you changed your post. You originally said they voted for Trump because they found him preferable, (not sure that was exact word), to Clinton. My problem with that logic it means they also found him preferable to all of the other republicans who ran.

I would prefer that they come to their senses in the least painful way that works. More pain will cause them to look for others to blame for it. Right now it's Muslims, Mexicans, Obama, Clinton and the IRS, etc. What happens when those aren't enough.
 
This is a riduclous poll. The last place that is likely to "go solar" is WV. BTW, a federal income tax credit is only good if you pay federal income taxes - many in impoverished areas do not pay much if any federal income taxes so the biggest "incentive" is to pay the powest utility bill possible. Using a nearly free "solar clothes dryer" is popular in WV.

I'm also not sure the typical Trump voter perceives it that way. They believe that Trump will help them on the jobs front. The reality is that his policies sound good for working-class people (Get rid of immigrants! Build a wall! Screw China!), and "common sense" suggests they will improve US jobs. However, it takes a lot of education and/or knowledge of economics to understand how those policies will backfire.

Even when they do, it's difficult for people to put together the dots. E.g. humans inherently feel losses more keenly than gains, especially when the losses are proximate (factory in your town closes) and the gains are remote (wages go up in Silicon Valley).

I suggest you read Strangers in Their Own Land by Arlie Hochschild. That might inculate a little much-needed sympathy.

• Clinton won about 1/3 of rural voters.
• As rural counties empty out, they aren't losing political importance, due to the Electoral College and related mechanisms.
• Calling them "rural hicks" and "ignorant" and "stupid" and "racist" is not going to win their vote.
• They're still human beings.
• They're still Americans, and their elected officials have a duty to care about them.

It seems much more likely they're motivated by economics and by social conservative issues, as well as a vague desire for change (particularly with a nostalgic bent).

I am intolerant of intolerance. I do not tolerate those who wish harm on others due to the color of their skin or their sexual orientation. The voters in Kentucky and West Virginia proved their hate and racism by voting Trump, and therefore I have no tolerance or patience for them.

The reality is that his policies sound good for working-class people (Get rid of immigrants! Build a wall! Screw China!), and "common sense" suggests they will improve US jobs. However, it takes a lot of education and/or knowledge of economics to understand how those policies will backfire.

Even when they do, it's difficult for people to put together the dots. E.g. humans inherently feel losses more keenly than gains, especially when the losses are proximate (factory in your town closes) and the gains are remote (wages go up in Silicon Valley).

I suggest you read Strangers in Their Own Land by Arlie Hochschild. That might inculate a little much-needed sympathy.



Let's not forget a few things.

• Clinton won about 1/3 of rural voters.
• As rural counties empty out, they aren't losing political importance, due to the Electoral College and related mechanisms.
• Calling them "rural hicks" and "ignorant" and "stupid" and "racist" is not going to win their vote.
• They're still human beings.
• They're still Americans, and their elected officials have a duty to care about them.



Yeah, I don't think so.

It seems much more likely they're motivated by economics and by social conservative issues, as well as a vague desire for change (particularly with a nostalgic bent).

Compassion is a virtue, but these Trump voters do not deserve compassion. The left and center-left has been showing them compassion for the past century, giving them funding for their rural hospitals, affordable healthcare, paying for the roads they use, etc. And then these yokels vote for people who want to take all of this away, just so that they can satisfy their hate and xenophobia. I'm tired of compassion for people who don't deserve it.
