Because I sure as HELL don't.

It is well known that a lot of right wingers in the USA vote against their best interests.

They vote against Obamacare, despite a lot of them being dependant on the ACA to survive. When asked about this, most of them don't even know that Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act are the same thing.

They vote against government subsidies for rural hospitals, roads, railroads, airports, etc. despite them being the only ones who benefit from those subsidies

They vote to cut EPA funding to clean up their towns and states, and keep their water drinkable and their air breathable.

Hillary Clinton offered rural coal mining communities job retraining and wind power careers. Instead, they voted for Trump who doesn't have any coherent plan to help them, except to cut funding for services that they depend on.

In essence, Hillbilly Joe Bob in West Virginia voted in 2016 to lower taxes on the "coastal elites" he hates so much and to cut funding to programs he probably depends on to survive.

These rural hicks are misguided by Fox News and the idea that they are somehow "temporarily embarrassed millionaires," who will get rich one day due to the "American Dream."

And to be honest, I'm goddamn tired of feeling sorry for them.

They are ignorant and stupid, and can't be bothered to change their views. When confronted with the truth, they sink back into the comfortable world of fake news.

And they vote out for PURE RACISM AND HATE. They don't mind Trump's blatant xenophobia. They don't mind the fact that people of color will be hurt by Trump's policies. They refuse to give a single damn about people with different skin color or sexual orientation than them when voting. They even cheer the deportation of millions of innocent, hardworking immigrants, due to the utterly fake idea that "them brown peoples done stole muh jobs!"

Screw these hicks. I hope they SUFFER because of who they voted for. I hope that their water becomes undrinkable and they choke on their coal dust filled air. I hope that Trump's budget cuts to their hospitals and schools results in their illiterate children dying of easily preventable diseases like the flu. I hope that if the ACA gets repealed, Farmer Billy Bob suddenly realizes that he depends on it for his heart medicine. I hope that the stupidity, misguided selfishness, and racism and xenophobia of their vote comes back to bite them in the butt... HARD.

Because after all, that's what they voted for.

Governess, you changed your post. You originally said they voted for Trump because they found him preferable, (not sure that was exact word), to Clinton. My problem with that logic it means they also found him preferable to all of the other republicans who ran.

I would prefer that they come to their senses in the least painful way that works. More pain will cause them to look for others to blame for it. Right now it's Muslims, Mexicans, Obama, Clinton and the IRS, etc. What happens when those aren't enough.

This is a riduclous poll. The last place that is likely to "go solar" is WV. BTW, a federal income tax credit is only good if you pay federal income taxes - many in impoverished areas do not pay much if any federal income taxes so the biggest "incentive" is to pay the powest utility bill possible. Using a nearly free "solar clothes dryer" is popular in WV.

Look, I do not like Trump any better than you do, and probably even less than you. But calling people names and mindlessly attaching labels is not going to convince any one of anything. It just makes you look bad.

yeah but does a self identified socialist have the jurisdiction to call other people stupid and ignorant?

i think not.

 How could this screed have been penned by you? After all:

I'd like to say hello to everybody here. I'm new to this forum (obviously), so let me tell you a bit about myself.

My background: I am a first generation immigrant to this country, a military veteran, and have been a resident of several states, in the Northeast, Midwest, and Mountain West.

My Political Beliefs: I am a Democratic Socialist. I believe in justice for all, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, or skin color. I believe that a peaceful, democratic revolution is needed to overthrow the current system of capitalist oppression and systematic racism in this country, and the vile, hateful ideology of Donald Trump.

My debate style: I can be pretty strident and adamant in my beliefs, and will not hesitate to call out any lies or bullcrap I see. I will not stand for insults, accusations of "trolling," or mockery of my strongly held views and beliefs. I do not respect racist, sexist, or bigoted views, and will . . . react strongly to any hate or xenophobia directed against me or any of my fellow citizens.

I hope I can make an impression on this forum, and hopefully change a few minds and challenge some ideas you may hold.

So do many left-wingers. Did you ever support a politician who increased your taxes? ;)

I'm also not sure the typical Trump voter perceives it that way. They believe that Trump will help them on the jobs front. The reality is that his policies sound good for working-class people (Get rid of immigrants! Build a wall! Screw China!), and "common sense" suggests they will improve US jobs. However, it takes a lot of education and/or knowledge of economics to understand how those policies will backfire.

Even when they do, it's difficult for people to put together the dots. E.g. humans inherently feel losses more keenly than gains, especially when the losses are proximate (factory in your town closes) and the gains are remote (wages go up in Silicon Valley).

I suggest you read Strangers in Their Own Land by Arlie Hochschild. That might inculate a little much-needed sympathy.

Let's not forget a few things.

• Clinton won about 1/3 of rural voters.
• As rural counties empty out, they aren't losing political importance, due to the Electoral College and related mechanisms.
• Calling them "rural hicks" and "ignorant" and "stupid" and "racist" is not going to win their vote.
• They're still human beings.
• They're still Americans, and their elected officials have a duty to care about them.

they vote out for PURE RACISM AND HATE.
Yeah, I don't think so.

It seems much more likely they're motivated by economics and by social conservative issues, as well as a vague desire for change (particularly with a nostalgic bent).

So it's okay for Trump's and his supporters to call immigrants "rapists," declare all Muslims "terrorists," and call progressives "traitors," but when I call out dumb hicks for what they are, I'm in the wrong? What gives?

Yes, because it's their children that have to pay for their stupidity and bigotry.

 How could this screed have been penned by you? After all:

I am intolerant of intolerance. I do not tolerate those who wish harm on others due to the color of their skin or their sexual orientation. The voters in Kentucky and West Virginia proved their hate and racism by voting Trump, and therefore I have no tolerance or patience for them.

Compassion is a virtue, but these Trump voters do not deserve compassion. The left and center-left has been showing them compassion for the past century, giving them funding for their rural hospitals, affordable healthcare, paying for the roads they use, etc. And then these yokels vote for people who want to take all of this away, just so that they can satisfy their hate and xenophobia. I'm tired of compassion for people who don't deserve it.
