Interesting. We have women here who complain about not being in as many leadership positions. Seems like each time a woman is hired to one she is off having a baby and then taking a year off or taking lots of time to care for sick kids. Generally when they return they are not as focused to maintain the same level of work load or effort. Not all obviously, but enough to notice. Once the women are a bit older they are back on track focused and career oriented again but many times that means that they are years behind in time worked. Now, as a teacher that doesn't matter. Work a certain number of years and get X amount of dollars no matter what... but in many fields that is not the case.
And then a decade or so later maybe bail again and for good to take care of a parent. I think crunch time is when these women try to come back but not only are they behind on skills now because they have been out of the game so they need to be retrained up before they can even begin, and not only has their contact list likely shrunk greatly in the interim, but they face resentment for their clear demonstration that something else was more important than the work and/or the organization, and an assumption that since they have already done it once they are much more likely to do it again, which of course they are.
