A government source says it does. The source claims that about 480 thousand extra deaths are caused by smoking each year -- in USA alone. The numbers sound horrible -- in fact too horrible to be true.

I wouldn't doubt it's in six figures.

I've seen personal anecdotal evidence that lung cancer in smokers is prevalent, including evidence in my family and neighbors.

Smoking causes 480,000 deaths per year according to your link. Even that sounds low to me. Factor in serious debilitating illness caused from smoking, and I think it's pretty clear smoking is a very foolish and dangerous thing to do.

I believe it. After smoking those things for a few years (I quit long ago) - I can believe it.

Besides, in 2017, smoking is just plain stupid.

The cool factor ended long ago, we know they can kill, they are expensive, smelly, dirty and LOTS of people will not even consider dating someone that smokes (like me - and I used to smoke).

And the return they give is minimal - the 'high' one feels is simply the body grateful to be fed the nicotine it craves. Booze, pot and even harder drugs give something tangible back. Smoking is just feeding a completely useless addiction.

No offense to those who smoke, but if you still do today - you are an idiot (on this).

Anyone care to offer an explination for studies like this one?

Medscape: Medscape Access

— Lung cancer rates are increasing in people who have never smoked, according to two new studies presented here at the 16th World Conference on Lung Cancer.

In fact, at one institution, the incidence of never-smokers diagnosed with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) jumped from 13% to 28% during a 6-year period, Eric Lim, MD, from the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust in London, United Kingdom, and colleagues report in their study. And many of these patients initially presented with advanced-stage disease.

The second study demonstrated that the incidence of lung cancer in never-smokers is increasing in the United States. This was observed in three facilities, most significantly for NSCLC. At one institution, for example, the rate of never-smokers climbed from 8.9% in 1990–1995 to 19.5% in 2011–2013.

Lung cancer is caused by more than smoking, I had a relative who died of lung cancer, and she never smoked in here life, while my great grandmother died at 85 of lung cancer, after smoking 5 packs a day of unfiltered cigarettes until camel filters came out, then she smoked 5 packs a day of those.

But outsode of cogarettes, radon a radioactive gas that naturally occurs can cause it, asbestos can cause it, being constantly exposed to exhaust fumes can cause it. But the big kicker is people living longer increases risks. The longer you live the greater risk for any cancer, even if you do nothing that accelerates it, alot of it is genetics.

I believe it. Quitting tobacco was the best thing I ever did. I am just lucky I did not end up with some of the chronic conditions I see friends with because of smoking.

100,000 sounds low to me. 480,000 sounds very likely.

Cigarettes are very, very nasty, and addictive. They wreak havoc on the human body over time. They are responsible for 85% of lung cancers, 61% of pulmonary diseases, 32% of heart disease, they're involved in diabetes, asthma, the list goes on.

Im not claiming cigarettes dont harm a persons health but i do think the scare surrounding it and secondhand smoke is exagerated.

I do not know. Maybe people die with symptoms from smoking rather then from symptoms from smoking. Somehow 480,000 deaths per year in USA seems an exaggeration.

I used to be an occasional smoker. I guess I should not.

Somehow the six digit figures look more like a moral panic then like facts.

It's odd how common it is for ex anythings to be the most judgmental assholes to others who do what they used to - no offense.

Dude, I don't think you call anyone an idiot without intending offense. Personally, I think it's idiotic to suggest that drug and alcohol abuse is so much better and safer, but again no offense.

I do not know. Maybe marijuana is safer? Do reliable statistics exist?

Honestly, I get really tired of counterintuitive nonsense being repeatedly stated as fact. Inhaling smoke from a filtered cigarette or vapor from an e-cig is the devil on your lungs but lighting up and inhaling a joint is fine and maybe even beneficial. Making a substance legal will make it harder to get. Sugar is just the same and just as bad as cocaine, while cigarette smoking is more dangerous than heroin and meth. Like really? My parents smoked the entire time I was growing up and y'know what? My dad kept his job until he retired and my mom never stole my piggy bank or pawned the TV to pay for cigarette money.

Sadly facts are unknown due to the fact that lots of manufactured statistics are presented as facts. Who knows?

Well you know, 4 out of five statistics are made up.

And also finding statistics which are not made up is very difficult. Sometimes, there are valid statistical reports.

There is more than lung cancer to fear with smoking. There's throat cancer, neck cancer, bladder cancer, and, of course, a plethora of health problems like COPD, heart disease, stroke and more. Yes, one can get lung cancer without having smoked. That does NOT mean smoking doesn't cause lung cancer.

Lung cancer is a particularly wicked cancer because of its generally late diagnosis and because it has so often spread even before diagnosis. The blood rich and lymph gland rich environment of the lungs helps cancer cells find "the super highway" to the rest of your body. And when that happens??

You.Are.****ed.

We're taking polls on facts now?

Its not just the deaths its the strokes and other health complications that go with it. My dad died at 61 after suffering a stroke and later a hear attack. My mom only stopped after having her artery cleared. Suffered a stroke during the operation. Limited movement and speech. Wonderful addiction.

Thank you for sharing. Fortunately I smoked only occasionally.

I tried it with my cousins when I was around 12 or 13. Coughed my brains out and told them to keep it. I have smoked cigars but only on special occasions and not recently.

I have smoked occasionally for 27 years -- since age 20.

I played tennis in highschool and college. Always a little overweight except my 3rd year in college when I broke my ankle. Could never get down to 165 ever again. Can't imagine competing if I had smoked. I just a few years older than you. I wonder if I have any effects from second hand smoke. It was normal when we were growing up. When I started with the big bank in Westchester they had a TV / smoking room. I was in my 20's and hung out there a bit. No windows. I can't imagine doing that now.
