Uh, it's a peaceful protest. No reason to get testy...

ummm... ok. Didn't know that saying wrong meant being testy.

go ahead and peacefully protest in a place where smoking is illegal. When you get arrested or fined please don't complain.

I haven't complained thus far...

In peaceful protest, I'll smoke when and where I want...

Greetings, AP. :2wave:

This may come as a surprise to you, but I've had a hunch for quite a while that you were a stubborn child - starting about age three - with your arms locked on your chest, and a stubborn frown on your face when someone told you NO! when you wanted to do something! YIPPEE - I was right! :lamo

I can't stand being around smokers. I can't even stand to be driving behind one because the smell is so strong it gets into my car.

I'm all for the ban.

Good evening pg. Your hunches are usually on target...

Local community colleges bans smoking on their campus. Ok, fine, so far. But, they ban it in ALL instances, regardless of scenario. For example: A person is not even allowed to smoke in their own vehicle with the windows rolled up while driving on a street on a remote part of campus.

Is that reasonable, or is that going too far?

Smoking causes tens of thousands of deaths per year.

Please note that this thread is NOT about their right or ability to make such rules. If that's you're comment, you can rest easy knowing that we acknowledge and admire your prowess at stating the obvious and the irrelevant. Here's you're pat on the back. This thread is about whether or not the rule is reasonable.

Yeah, too far: sounds like Berkeley or SF state.

dupe.

If it is their property and is legal, they can have whatever rules they want.

It could be a decent selling point for prospective students - a campus where no one smokes at all. Some anal retentive types and/or people allergic to cigarette smoke might find that very attractive.

From a marketing standpoint, I cannot see it hurts them...smoking is about as uncool as you can get these days (and I used to smoke). A few people will flip out. But so what? You don't like it - either quit smoking or go to another school.

They have to catch me first.

Sounds more like an argument for banning it altogether, not just for a few minutes out of a day.

Definitely -- smoking causes tens of thousands of deaths.

As an ex-smoking biker I can smell if the driver of the car I'm behind is smoking. The ban applies on campus, the smoker, in or out of his car, is on campus.

Yeah, that's bad.

Well, they do have a veterinary program there. I guess they won't be teaching monkeys to smoke so they can study the effects anymore.

As with any 'toxin', nicotine has beneficial medicinal properties.

Sometimes doctors will discreetly recommend 2-3 cigarettes a week to patients with various ailments who can't afford pharmaceutical co-payments.

I am not sure if the ban is reasonable.

Won't lose any sleep over it.

It's BS.

As is many rules, regs, and laws that stigmatize smokers.
