Voter laws vary by state. In some states, you can vote as soon as you get out of jail (in vermont and maine, even inmates can vote) while in a few others, felons must goto court in order to get their suffrage back.

IMO?

As soon as they have completed their sentence. This includes the period of probation/parole.

Once done? ALL rights, not just voting rights, should be reinstated.

Once a debt to society has been paid, it is considered paid.

Prisoners should be allowed to vote. That would encourage politicians to make US Penal System as humane as Canada's.

As soon as someone is deemed safe enough to be released into the general public that individual should have all of his or her rights restored. This also includes 2nd amendment rights,4th amendment rights and all other rights.

So you want politicians to kiss the ass of inmates by promising to make their situation seem less of a punishment?

Prisons shouldn't be ****holes like ours are where (many) inmates are literally scared daily for their safety and well being. Their punishment should their removal from society and loved ones and not what ours has become.

I think prisons should be a safe place for convicts to serve their time where they are given adequate care and also have the ability to improve themselves to better serve them and society once they are released. Our prisons do none or very little of that and the end result is our system fails everyone.

You may not like the cushy prisons but look at the statistics and you will find that the countries that provide such conditions also have a much lower re-activism rate because they attempt to treat prisoners with more respect and as humans instead of animals. You cannot lock a person away for years-decades treating them like animals and expect them to suddenly transform into model citizens when they are released.

I think that felons should get their rights back once they complete their sentence and a period of probation thereafter where they cannot commit any new crimes. So maybe a year of probation, during which they must remain completely crime-free, then they can get it all back.

Yes. 2nd Amendment rights as well, although I would not approve of granting that privilege to those convicted of violent crime or using firearms...

Somehow Canada and much of Europe do not have crime rates higher then USA even though they have humane penal systems.

...should read "violent crime USING firearms".
